  1. I went ahead and tested all the coils made for Gold Racer including 2 prototypes from another coil company and only the 5x7 eliptical has this issue. But I have seen this before with a couple detector coils from another brand detector. here is the fix. while the detector is on and it is in overload, try taking the coil cover off. it immediately fixes the issue. you can even crank it up to 99 sens. Like steve said, it might still overload on the ground. but not in an airtest. now maybe steve might have a theory of why the coil cover might cause the overload. and not when it is removed. good luck
  2. I seen this post and even though ive had a 5"x7" eliptical for awhile. I havent had a chance to get out to the goldfields to try it, due to my knee injury. So I decided to try my luck in my yard to see if my small eliptical did the same. Unfortunately my luck was bad, mine does the same. in any search mode, it is fine on 89 sens. but 90 is the overload. Im not sure this is a individual coil problem. Seems like it might be this way with all or most of them. Some design flaw. One thing I do know is most of the time I use gold racer, I run in all metal. the grounds that I detect will rarely let me turn up the gain past 79. More then likely when I get out soon to use this new 5"x7" elip. I probably wont be running the sensitivity up at 90. Good luck
  3. I would nominate Paul; but last I heard he's lost in Trinity county somewhere.
  4. I found many large nuggets thru the years shallow. I found a couple at different places that were 1/2 mile from any discernable diggings. I gridded the whole area and even panned buckets of dirt at those places and never found anything else. sometimes I think some of these could have been dropped by an unlucky prospector. Either in recent times or long ago. I talked to a local indian elder before about the history of when the white man first showed up to prospectv for gold. he told me from past stories that the indians tried to kill as many prospectors as they could invading their land. and when they did , they took their belongings and tools including gold and threw them away somewhere that they couldn't be found and used again. maybe when they were packing this stuff off from an ambush in a hurry, they may have dropped a chunk of gold here and there.
  5. I believe the name around there for the bigfoots is the Omah. One of your days off , you should take a drive from there up on bald hills road all the way over to Orick to lady bird johnson park. it is a really scenic drive. youll probably see some Roosevelt elk and maybe some blurry hairy shadows running through the woods. Good luck.
  6. Nice finds. old silver coins are just as great as a nice nugget. I dont know what the weather will be like there this coming week; but in north Cal it is suppose to cool off tues to 80's and even some 70's later in the week. That is very rare for june around here. It is usually in the 100's. Might be a good week or next weekend for everyone to hit the goldfields before it gets hot again. Meanwhile im still a armchair detectorist. Good luck
  7. There is one characteristic that seems the same on the last 7-8 vlfs that ive owned and seems strange. most have the same basics puting them together. coil attached to lower pole, then lower pole attached to upper pole or middle pole etc all the way back to the arm cuff. Well every one of mine after constructing them together has the coil leaning to the right. I swing detectors left handed most of the time so the coil leans right towards my left foot. I thought it was me tilting the detector a long time ago, but if you set them flat and level on the ground and look straight down the detector from the arm cuff, you would see that the coils lean to the right a few degrees. my partner has had many of the same detectors as I have had and hers are perfectly straight if you look down them. it seems the issue is the adjustment holes of the poles must have been drilled slightly off to the side of center. it is not a big issue for me, just gives my detector character. I think the same guy that built my detectors has worked for several companys. so if your listening, please drill the holes straight next time. I would like atleast one straight detector, besides my minelabs which are straight. Other then that chuck my detectors other characteristics are they really like gold.
  8. I think a detectorist that spends an adequate amount of time detecting annually, should consider having a big coil in their arsenal. If someone only detects a couple times a year, then I wouldnt consider it. Alot for me would depend on what detector it was for. I think most brand big coils for vlfs probably average about 1-2" more depth then a 7-11" coil. but that amount of increase might just make a difference at certain places and scenarios. The big coil might brighten up a quiet signal that was just missed with a smaller coil. I think the best one out of several that I tried for vlfs was made by Nel coils. but that was on a gb pro. I usually use a 10" for scout detecting at a new site. it is a good in between size that will grab small and bigger targets. then ill switch to another size depending on the size of the targets that im after. With pi detectors I feel I get alittle more depth with a big coil over the standard 11" on targets. More then the 1-2" increase from vlf big coils. the big coils on any detector do have the advantage of faster ground coverage though. so basically it is good to have several size coils for different situations if you spend enough time in the field to be worth the purchase. Good luck
  9. Well I hope your move goes well, if you need help moving I volunteer scott. for I am on knee leave. lol. When you get ready, ill help you find some places. there is many many claims around there, but there is still alot of good public unclaimed places. I hope you like mountain climbing. Lol . We will have to get together and have a meet and greet sometime. then my wife and I can drink all the beer you buy. I will be headed over that way around the beginning of july on my way to the coast. walking in sand should be good for my knee. I hope your new job works out for you. I hope the rez people like you because they still havent found the last 2 guys they hired. lol
  10. Thanks. Really it was a dumb idea to try that thing. I havent rode one in over 20 years, and im not getting any younger. I was just trying to show some younger friends that I still have ego. Evidently I still do, but my knee is a lesson to me to say no next time. I hope to return to detecting soon; but that takes some good knees first.
  11. Are you kidding me, now your moving to my area. lol. well hell I guess I can help set you up on some places. when are you relocating there?
  12. Hello I havent been here in a while due to an injury. I decided to ride a mechanical bull for 10 seconds then jump off. But I landed wrong and tore my acl on my knee. I ended up with a partial seperation and tear. I ended up having surgery and im now doing therapy. it is a long slow process but I hope to get back detecting soon. Meanwhile I have plenty of time to study how to dismount a raging bull properly. It will do me good to read some gold detecting stories on here; so I can remember what it is like to hunt for gold Good luc
  13. Hello, I received the new gold racer 7.5 x 4" elliptical waterproof DD coil this evening for testing. I wont have a chance to get out on some gold with it till this weekend, but I made a little demonstration video at home. looks like it is going to be a real winner for tiny gold and for hard to reach places that other coils cant reach. Good luck
  14. I will be testing one out probably this weekend, if it dont rain like crazy. I have some places that have good tight bedrock spots perfect for a small eliptical. after using the 10x5 coils on Gold racer and finding tiny gold, it will be interesting to see what the new coil will do. it really reminds me of the gb2 6" eliptical. I wish they made one for all the Nokta / Makro models.
  15. Looks like you made your own luck , Lucky. Nice finds once again!
  16. Sounds like your having fun. I hope you find alot of good gold. if you decide to stay there and live, can I have your flip flops back home. lol good luck
  17. Nice job fred. looks like my lead to gold ratios some places. I dont think people realized how much junk detectorist find while detecting. maybe during your free time you can reload a couple boxes of shotgun shells. Good luck on your next trip
  18. Ive been Really busy as of late, so we havent been out in a couple weeks. We made it out this afternoon for a couple hours to clean up some deep and shallow ground with the Gold Racer and the gpx 5000 and Coiltek elite coil. we have detected the place for a few years, but weve been cleaning up all the signals by gridding little by little. we finally finished up today and found 2 deep pieces with the gpx and my partner found 1 shallow pieces next to a stump that I guess we missed all this time. She decided to try out the Gold Racer again and really likes it compared to her gb2. Didnt find alot left but 3 pieces for 1.5 dwt combined. but I think we did a good job cleaning up this pocket gold deposit once and for all. I did manage to video the Coiltek finds. Ill post them soon.
  19. I seen along time ago of a body was found over in humbolt co. Ca. A guy was metal detecting and found a piece of clothing with metal buttons of a murdered boy. I believe some witness and evidenced at scene linked them also to the bastard that killed him. I would have not wanted to be the detectorist that found him.
  20. Nice coin finds Brian. Looks like you hit the jackpot. I hope you have more days like that ahead.
  21. Roughwater; if we lived closer, I would let you take my R2 out to try it out and see if it is the one for you. I will be testing it out on gold here next trip or two, so I will post my findings. Steve provably tried it out on gold already. I expect it to perform similar to the fors plus. It may not find the tiny gold as well as gold racer, but it will probably do good on gold just alittle bigger with theshold mode and maybe some isat if needed.
  22. I made it back out yesterday morning for an hour or so until the mosquitoes became unbearable. I thought I was in Alaska in the summer again. It wasnt a big deal to make a new post about the gold finds with Gold mak, so ill just post it here. They are amazingly small and it is very easy to find these and smaller with Gold mak and all metal mode. It will interesting to see how small they can be with the 5" coil. im not really interested in detecting colors but it is possible with Gold racer. By the way anybody from another part of the world, that is an American dime coin. our smallest currency.
  23. When it all gets down to finding the best detector for each individual, it still makes little difference when it comes to success whether your looking for gold or treasure. I think most think that the latest and greatest detector is going to find them what they are looking for. But the location is what gets you the finds. I would spend $1,000 on research material to get me some locations before I bought another detector, if thats what it takes. Fortunately for me I have never had to do that. All the current gold and treasure finders know about getting good locations and they continue to be successful. Some with old school detectors. everywhere I walk there is old diggings everywhere, if you know what your looking at. the old timers flipped over almost every square inch of ground in gold bearing areas. I couldnt detect all of it in my lifetime. a person just needs to find these spots and thru trial and error they can get some consistency and success. personally I think of all people that have ever bought a gold detector, it is probably less then 10 percent ever find any gold. the other 90 percent sell them or put them in the closet. Finding gold or treasure is not a rocket science and not that difficult. you dont even need to be a Steve herschbach or a californiagold to be successful. Just get some research done and get out and walk around and look at the land to see what doesnt look natural and youll probably find some old diggings that will nail down an area to start. Then those new high tech detectors with new features can really come in handy. especially if the features help you get thru the ground better then the last guy. but like Steve said let them continue to build new detectors with new features and maybe eventually they will have all the different detectors for everybodys favorite flavor. so dont stop now manufactors, keep them coming
