Boatman, if you have a place where you have proven that the gold is up to three feet deep , perhaps you should consider a push....or a pick and shovel. Pick, shovel, spread out the dirt and detect...

more work but you won't miss much-once you learn the detector.

I think anyone can read, understand and do the basic tests for common meteorites...

I don't think they will want to test them. Apparently, scientists think they know everything about the many "Ordinary Chrondrites" and it is expensive and time consuming.

the others are so rare that you will likely walk right on by a cold find and never know....if it is a new fall and the buzzards are flocking you better get there too....

but, that is my never humble opinion

Just a reminder, if you see any quartz it is not a meteorite ...many rocks are full of magnetic attractive stuff.

Bill Southern’s Meteorite Forum has many knowledgeably people that know way more than me.

Have you tried taking the main rod out and running the coil with the lower rod?
it might work if you go slow?

Not meteorites!

some of the hot rocks in Gold Basin can fool you.

if in doubt just use a whet stone to grind off a small area. If a meteorite you will see flecks of nickel / iron....

I could not justify my cost to have fun and sun either!

 I was only curious in the dollar amount for the X coils....

I painfully know the cost the Gpz and 19 inch coil.

no worries if my curiosity is too intrusive.

how much has three X coils and related expenses cost.....versus the return.

 I realize the return is related to the time you have had them...and will continue...

As I recall the cord could be secured in those slots....if they were Minelab cords...after market would not fit...pretty useless in my never humble opinion.

I drove the 49 from the bottom to Hiway 70 once....what a miserable goat trail that is!  I was much younger then. I donot recommend the drive just to see where it starts and ends...

yes, but, you just go very slow and listen very, very carefully...

Treasure tales are almost always exaggerated ….7 to 10 feet is pretty deep, if you have ever dug a two foot hole you'd know what I mean...

You can buy an older model Minelab Pi for 400-800  dollars with a big coil...if the cache is in an iron container you might find it....

I owned Jim’s first edition , he will always be my prospecting hero. I have vol 3 Follow the Drywashers, the nuggetshooters bible... seventh edition...too bad you are in Oz.

Ray Mills wrote pretty good book...it is informative and rates 3 on my list.

I think that is prudent choice for your purpose! 

If you don’t have much or any experience nugget hunting  you should read all you can on this forum. And you should copy Steve’ Guide to prospecting with the Equinox.
