It was heavy. Encrusted with dirt. How would I make the long drive home over bumpy country roads? I wrapped it in a towel. Will it explode? I finally made it home. I then discovered it to be a Thirty Pound Bolt Parrot Shell, flat head and all. No fuse. Used for target practice from the nearby Fort. Solid Iron. What a "Dumb Arse " I was.

Howdy George that's a great story and a memorable discovery. So i decided to wait awhile before sharing  my first projectile because I did not want to be rude and step on your post.So other than a single example of a 1 1/2" canister shot that I found at the site of a local Indian massacre circa 1850 I also came across this one completely by accident. Although it is 80 years more recent than yours {circa www 2} it is  also far more unpredictable IMHO fired and unexplored with the fuse intact. If it would have been a period example from the Native American slaughter I would have more than likely risked packing it out.For the time being it is safely hidden.                                                                                                                   2BC46835-93CF-4B5C-8FF1-268BC83D950E.thumb.jpeg.b35d949a5605be3e3c313905bf251a86.jpeg

    Thanks Doc!

I believe that too, they couldn't have covered all 200 acres. I did get this last week, and a mercury dime a year and a half ago. Also 2/3ds of a Trime. 20230129_103930.thumb.jpg.593446c63be87a010fb32e9135724882.jpg

It was in a random spot in a place they wouldn't have gone. Local report says they were there every day for 3 weeks, and they didn't have permission from the primary owner. Seems some hunters have nighthawked it too.

Going to try different detectors, settings and stuff there. 🙂

    Poachers and claim jumpers.

Karen: Your disturbing the peace. What gives you the right to dig here? What do you think you will find?

    Tex: Worms

    Karen: Worms?

Tex: "Disturbed" worms with a metal plate in their Head!

    KMA Karen.

You should have whipped out your trusty old DEEPSEEKER George and asked the old biddy if she would like to give it a go? GARRETT that is.                                                                                                                                  10E51410-F959-4212-B8BF-B4132071D601.jpeg.904556b41c3abb8a57ef427500b37366.jpeg

    Thanks Doc Bach,

I think all diggers find that they just seem to have a knack for finding a particular relic or thing, and for me locks has been one of those things. I certainly don’t have a similar knack for finding gold ! Although, where you detect definitely plays a big role - I don’t detect parks or schools often, and I don’t live near the beach. By the way I’m not sure padlocks are even really considered big irons, the way axe heads are far r example- but I do love finding them.

All very good points relicmeister, It seems that we have both similar detecting interest and habits.

Early Wednesday morning there was another rough-scaled snake in my bedroom, this is the second one.. The book says it's a venomous and aggressive night hunter, and it's also got long fangs.. Sadly, it broke it's neck tripping over the doormat on its way out.. I put a picture on Facebook and copped a lot of flack for killing it.. I don't mind snakes in the bush but in my bedroom is another story.. I don't want the things in my house, I'm still trying to work out how they get in.. Until I do, I'll go to bed wearing my new gumboot snake gaiters..

You seem to like animals Erik....Perhaps a pet Mongoose would work like a charm?                                       A3BACBEC-A24B-4915-A4EB-BF7B54A5D2C7_4_5005_c.jpeg.719d794ed5ad3415479e6273d45e8be4.jpeg

  6. Good choice,Cliff490.I'm not going to make disparaging remarks about the Manticore because I do not own one and most likely never will? I too canceled my no pay ahead pre order and decided to put the dough towards the Garrett Axiom because I have enough VLF'S.If you are a relic hunter you're going to love the D2.Also great purchase on the 280 pack as well and money well spent.

I watched the video the other day and I thought to myself that he was just trying to stir up the doo doo a little? If that was indeed his intention even to a small degree then mission accomplished.

And speaking of videos Brass Medic just posted one about the Manticore is now being shopped to all dealers in case you are still waiting.

Must be noted I also show iron to correlate all holes produce it whether good target is there or not. Important info surely as every good target has colocation carpet style. I assume all great relic sites are similar or maybe the tough ones and that's why I find things everyone else may have given up

Hot Damm son! just dig it all. you will have a Hell of a lot better time and will be amazed at what surprises turn up.

From one big iron hunter/digger to another that's a very impressive collection of locks!

One never gets jaded from digging those killer railroad locks with their amazing patinas.I have had the good fortune through the decades to find my share from the North Western Pacific  and Southern Pacific lines and they never disappoint thanks for sharing those.

Unfortunately fake bling.  If it was real the gold dance would have happened and I would have treated myself to lunch.  Lol

i am still searching for the elusive gold escudo from one of the wrecks.

Keep at it PI-Man they are still out there and yet to be discovered. Many are still left to be washed ashore or exposed in the surf that you are fortunate enough to hunt. And no doubt there are even others also to be found on the higher ground at the Seminole Indian sites etcetera. At this point you are probably thinking tell me something that I don't already know lol!
