  1. Rare to even see a 5500-D SL, especially for sale and in new condition, I had to grab it. Coil shows no use, like it went out to the backyard once, the sticker arm cuff cushions weren't put on. It was my first detector, purchased out of Sears catalog, if I remember correctly in 1990. Dug many great CW relics with this detector my first 2 years in the hobby until I moved on to the Eagle Spectrum in 92'. It cleaned up on a 20 acre virgin battle site, that later greater detectors struggled to find anything missed. Bought it just for nostalgia, but now after playing with it out back using the coils for my XLT, which seem to work perfectly fine with it, I can see this hitting the field with a 15" coil for some shell or hut hunting. After all, as a rookie I never used this machine to its full potential, and knowing what I know now after over 30 years of detecting. might as well try and have fun with it. Sold my original for $150 and snagged this one for $150 👍

If I could get the disc audio portion to equal/match the all metal side, the V3i would be great.  I'm sure it's in the many settings.  Right now, the disc side audio seems to have a tremendous lag when passing over targets.  If I put it in all metal audio, it is spot on; no audio delay.  I'm not using the wireless headphones either.  Changing the recovery speed doesn't change it.  I'd almost be just content using the all metal audio all the time if I could figure out how to change the pitch of it higher. 🤔

Mixed Mode is the setting your looking for, it's a hybrid All Metal/Disc mode and can give you the high tones you want while still achieving max depth of all metal mode. Standard MM is dual tone, accepted vdi's are high tone and rejected are low tone, or you could reverse that tone scenario. Runs much like a GPX, I call my XLT the GPX Jr 😀. You can also turn on Tone ID while in MM to get out of dual tone, and set accept and reject to your liking, while still remaining in an all metal mode. Simple start would be to just select Relic program and turn on Mixed mode, it will run 2 tone all metal. Enjoy.

  3. 6.59khz coils - Blue Max 4x6DD... Concetric - Bullseye 5.3 (5"), Royal 800 (8"), Stock 9.5, Blue Max, Maxima 1500 15"

My 2 choices for CW relic hunting is the Stock 9.5 and the 15" Maxima, As for the small coils, the Bullseye 5.3 is the better performer hands down, but with the right tweaks the 9.5 can perform well on sites where a smaller coil is in need. Have fun with it, I sure do.

I bet you guys are right about the two-box setup. Well for those who wanted to go deeper, that would do it, but who wants to dig 4 foot deep holes? You cache and horde hunters may be getting your wish! 😎

4 foot deep hole can get pretty damn exciting on an early colonial settlement, even better, in a Civil War camp.

And....That's why SAPER prefers a detector that uses real Allmetal and Mix mode....in combination with maximally good 2D and 3D separation of targets in iron...as well as really good depth of detection,,,,

This is why I continue to use my White's XLT, and if it had higher freq options, forget about it, would never need another VLF. Garrett should be all over this with White's tech, but hey I'm now following Versa.

  6. Being content with the detectors I swing, decided instead of buying one of the latest and greatest releases that I'd put my hobby $ on updating my batts, headphones etc. Seen a post, I believe here, on Steveg's upgrade shafts so looked into them. Liked his concept design for the XP D-2, since I've wore out my ORX shaft, having issues with lock pins and the remote popping off, I made the purchase. The setup using the counterbalance with the 13" coil has a great feel in the field after a half day or more of swing'n. I like that you can easily adjust the weight, or remove the canister for the smaller coils. Also like that the remote locks in tight and isn't popping off anymore. Money well spent.

GPX locks & shafts were also wore out after many years of swing'n big coils so I upgraded it as well with Steve's setup. Once again, good solid feel in the field with the 15" coil. All looks built to last and great communication with the guy who will surely stand by his products.

  7.    Have many years on this machine, and Relic Program is a great way to learn what the Eagle is telling you. Like Locator, I suggest Relic but turn on "Mixed Mode" as well and really not fool with any other settings for now, because there are many advantages of having MM on for learning the Eagle's language. Best advantage is it being an All Metal mode there is a big increase in depth on old coins and relics without having to dabble to deep into all the different settings. Operates as 2 tone , now the rejected targets (ex. iron rubbish) give a low tone and you can quickly pass over and ignore, and focus on the high tone targets that you're more interested in digging. Factory programs are mildly set and null/blank out the rejected targets, therefor masking out good targets. Most folks today are setting up all the new latest and greatest VLF detectors on the current market to run this way. We've learned opening up the detector this way, where we hear it all, has great benefits. Next advantage while using MM, now you can slow way down with your sweep speed and pace all together for improved gridding. All the factory programs are setup in Discrimination mode which requires a more aggressive, constant and consistent swing, where by turning on non motion Mixed Mode you can operate at your own comfortable pace, I like to crawl with my Spectrum. MM goes deep, and its normal to see higher VDI's on targets deeper ten 10" or so, like 90-95. Sensitivity settings others mentioned, and the main one not mentioned, PreAmp Gain, can aid in the detectors  performance on deeper targets, but you need to know what they are, and when you can adjust. AC Sense - this increases Discrimination sensitivity only  (This setting would boost all Factory Programs) DC Sense - this increases All Metal sensitivity only  (an adjustment which could enhance Mixed Mode, if needed).   PreAmp Gain is the overall main sensitivity adjustment setting for the detector in all modes. I always prefer getting the gain from using MM and leave PreAmp alone, but there are times where she's running so smooth I'm able to bump it up a notch. These sensitivities can be bumped up to the detectors edge of stability for maximized depth, but a smooth running detector always works best.  I run her hot, twitching on the edge of stability, and for my soil my settings are usually at AC- 72 , DC- 55, PreAmp- 1 as an example.                                          Mixed Mode Relic is a great setup no matter what your searching for, play with it, MM "on" or "off" on targets to get a feel for what's going on. If your selected site is way busy with targets and very close to one another, for some, MM can be a bit much on the ears and head, but I enjoy the chaos of signals to reap the rewards. So if you prefer the ole traditional, "if it Beeps- I dig" setup, simply select a factory program and try to bump up your AC and PreAmp sensitivies for deeper targets, but its hard to beat MM. Bumping up the DC Sense in Factory/Disc modes is only going to enhance pinpoint depth.          This detector is still top of the line and performs just as well as todays newest releases for coins and relics, and once learned you can dig deeper into the settings to reap even more performance advantages.

The 100+ and minus was amazing too

Still is in a CW relic hunters world, for sure best ID'ing detector I swing. Some would think who needs the -95 negative #'s, but for a relic hunter I immediately know if the old forged iron or modern iron is under the coil, and the positive +95#'s are just as informative. Another feature that's nothing new that works great, Bottle Cap Reject.

  9. Minelab GPX 5000, and if PI isn't playing nice on the site I grab White's XLT which has the all metal "Mixed Mode", a hybrid of all metal/disc, best of both worlds, brings all metal depth and discrimination by VDI tone to the field, which allows your final discrimination to be done by your ears and that thing in between them, just how I like.

  10. Could be as simple as the headphones your using, I'm very picky to which headphones I plug into the GPX. For me, one popular brand creates an extra threshold or constant buzzing/wheezing sound that drives me nuts. While on the subject I will also mention the cell phone can cause a nuisance with the gpx. If I have to carry the phone while gpx'n, I switch it into airplane mode. Good luck with it.

Wish they dropped this form factor entirely (or at least delayed it) and focused instead on providing an equivalent/compatible coil to their excellent 10x5 HF D1 coil.  That is the true gap in the D2 coil lineup at the moment.

The true gap in XP's coil line up is the lack of Mono coils, not everybody detects parks and beaches. In fact as a relic hunter I only need a DD coil for about 20% of my detecting when hunting higher mineralization or early site iron rubbish. For example, a mono coil would be great when running Coin Deep or Gold 1 on the ORX, preferring the 9" DD for Coin Fast mode. My reasoning for getting the 13x11 is for that little extra depth that mono coils bring to the field. In my experience the mono coils ID iron and pinpoint better. Having logged in quite a few hours on my buddies  D 2 now, I believe a mono coil would suit Relic and the Mono freq modes well, and maybe more.

  12. Tech changes, but this still holds true. Have always preferred a 2 tone setup, the low tone for the targets I'm not interested in, and the high tone for the targets I am. Really no need for different tones for targets that I know I'm going to dig anyhow, just my preference and why I still swing a White's Mixed Mode. 3 custom programs I've built on my buddies D2 I've got to run for the last couple months until his arm heals up are, #2 Sense in 2 Tone, Mono 17khz in 2 Tone, and a tweaked Relic mode program. Can't help but think a small mono coil could come into play in the scenarios mentioned if XP ever made one. Would love a big mono coil for the ORX, though the 13" X 35 is no slouch.
