Tons of great advice in this thread! F350Platinum really nailed it. On my beaches here in North Carolina ( which are really sanded in right now ) if I start hearing iron signals I really need to slow down and listen closely. Heavier target will tend to stay together on my beaches.

I'm running Grey Ghost Amphibian IIs right now and I like them. I have a pair of Tony Eisenhower headphones on my Excal and I love them as well. I agree with ColonelDan on the sound quality and build quality on the Eisenhower headphones.

I bought the 11" originally, and just purchased the 11 x 13". If I had it to do over, I would have bought the 9" and then the 11 x13". A little weight difference between the 11" and the 11 x 13", but not enough to matter to me. I'm usually hunting the beach, and like the extra coverage. I think you're leaning th right way.

I made up a full length waveguide out of the RG179 I had left over for deeper wading. Made it just the length I needed and it fits under my cover. Also used the original waveguide control clip. Only took about 15 minutes. I figure I can make a few more out of my original waveguide cable after I cut out the discolored ends. That would keep you from having to stuff the extra cable in the shaft.

That will work as well. I liked the split tubing, because it is split on the entire length and made it much easier to put on and remove without removing the lower shaft and to get the wire under it. Seems to stay on very well. Has very good memory. I may make a longer antenna as well and I can then use two pieces, one on the upper and one on the lower.

It is split loom tubing that I used to protect some fiber audio cables behind an audio console. Here is the link of the product that I used. Got to my Deus II this morning. Here is the one I made with paracord. Gotta love paracord! I've got the Doodads clip, but use a lanyard as well. Made a loop that included the d-ring portion of the USB lanyard and a piece of heat shrink, stiched on the wife's sewing machine without her knowing it! Sealed heat shrink. Added a push button that I saved off of an old jacket. Looped over controller and around stem. Tightened up loop with push button.

Going to give parkgt's idea a shot on my new 11" x 13" coil. I bought some RG179 removed the shield and double covered with marine heat shrink. Attached to the coil with velcro wire ties so I can easily remove the coil cover. Can still attach the charging clip without removing the antenna. Ran up the outside of a Nokta Legend carbon fiber shaft and hold the cable in place with a section of nylon split braided sleeving that I had left over from an audio job. Thanks again to parkgt for this great idea! Have not tested it yet, but hope to in the next few days.

I broke the lanyard that came with my Deus II originally, and made one from a USB stick lanyard ( picked up on ebay ) and some paracord attached to the shaft. Don't have my Deus handy to take a picture.
