Hey Peg. In light of your recent photo which gives the mystery item a bit of an asian flavor I'm starting to lean towards Chucks opinion about it possibly being a smoking pipe with a removable bowl.Opium pipes in particular and hash pipes in more recent times had removable bowls so that they could be cleaned and to collect the squeezins only to be enjoyed again.Frankly I'm surprised that some of the more knowledgeable relic guys and researchers on this forum haven't pinned it down by now.If you do not get a solid identification on it you might consider contacting Butch and Anita Holcombe at American Digger Magazine.Send the photos and they will post it for you in an upcoming issue.

The thing that stumps me are the English letters that I can’t make out…thought it was Chinese pipe at first till I saw them. Thanks for the tip re American Digger, I think I’ll do that.

  2. Greetings! I spent 6 winters in Melbourne Beach…finally found my 1/2 Reale after 3 seasons of detecting. A December storm had hit & there were 6-8’ cuts on the beach where I found it near the base of cut. After weather events like that, all of us detectorists are out driving feverishly up & down A1A checking all the “spots” looking for the right place to detect! And I was competing with the great Terry Shannon & his buddies…if you don’t know him, check out his YouTube videos & google him, wrote some cool books too. Heck of a nice guy…maybe you’ll run into him someday. Good luck!

Am I seeing a head on whatever it is?

If you rotate it where the large opening is straight out to the right the other part of it looks like a bird’s head. The recessed area on the side I see it’s eye 👁 . Being it gets smaller beyond the eye has to be it’s beak.

PS  It may not be a birds head but it is some kind of creature  . Will you please post a picture looking head on to it.

I do believe I’m looking at its eye on the side.

After cleaning & looking closer, check out the teeth…maybe a sea serpent or dragon?824D6FE5-832C-4B2A-B8BA-35FFE190F391.thumb.jpeg.5d62b64366da7dc471a7db10307dd591.jpeg8CD4924C-63C8-4D59-833D-54819E0B3A69.thumb.jpeg.9baa4e4677627bc20229ada0b5556661.jpeg

.It appears there are two paths for transport -- lower ornate one and upper plain (circularly cylindrical) one.  If so (i.e. both are hollow), this is probably an indication of its utility.  Either that or it’s expected to see a lot of torque and that upper strut is simply for strength (although that seems unlikely).  I'm probably not helping much in ID'ing it....

It appears that only the horizontal narrow tube allows airflow, and it’s only about 1/16 inch wide.

Cool piece Peg, first thought was  part of a pipe but has threads.

I thought maybe a ceramic bowl would screw in the threaded end and stem fit on other end? But likely part of something else, like old gas lamp…CAE84A6C-DA99-4353-86D5-65571B58FF81.thumb.png.89dddac0a81f2c8747f6b6abbbcf7c08.png

  6. That is so cool! And love how you explore and find your special spots. Those Texas billionaire oilmen brothers have bought up huge acreage where I like to roam here in Idaho….they’ve recently put gates up everywhere. I realize it’s their private land, but to those of us who live here, it’s been our backyard for years. Tuff change for us.
