  1. I'm thinking it's obsidian. It can be found in east-central Yuma County.
  2. There is also the Gold Prospectors Association of Phoenix. I'm not a member but, did meet some of them at the last Camelback Coin Show. The next show is August 13th. I'm planning on attending. Need to add more Morgan's to my collection. Which reminds me, I need to show off some of the coins found metal detecting out at Fortuna Mine. That was back in the early 70's. Can't do it now since it is within the Barry Goldwater Reserve. One of which is an 1883 'O' Morgan.
  3. Definitely, I've located an old apartment site where only the slabs remain. Aerial photos show it was there in '48 and gone in '81. It appears to be on county property. I'm out in the Foothills and go to AmVets on occasion. Also, there are a few old silver mines that I want to investigate. One next to Adair Gun Range and several off Imperial Dam Road. My schedule is busy the next few weeks with HS starting (Instructor at one of the HS). I'll post when it looks like I have some time.
  4. I also, need to get a tumbler, again. They are fun to do. Last batch I tumbled was some Teepee Canyon agates from South Dakota. I'll take some pics when I get a chance.
  5. Thanks everyone! In reply to mn90403, we hunted mostly Camps Coxcomb, Granite and Iron Mountain. They are relatively close together. We did hunt the others, Bouse, Hyder, Horn and Laguna. But, the three is where almost all of what I posted were found. As I get time I'll put up some of my finds from Fortuna Mine and Camp Hualapai. On the three dog tags shown, my daughter was able to locate relatives of the soldiers in hopes of passing them on. Unfortunately, she never got a reply. Would have been nice to to return something lost. Now to see about getting on to an area outside Datelined, AZ that was an old airbase!
  6. I found some pics of my Patton training camp finds and put them in Detecting for Coin and Relics. Enjoy!
  7. Back in the late 60's, early 70's we would metal detect Patton's Desert Warfare training camps. We kept mainly to the camps near Desert Center, CA, Coxcomb, Iron Mountain and Granite. We also did the ones near Hyde and Horn, AZ and Camp Laguna by the Yuma Proving Grounds and one over towards Bouse, CA. Camps Coxcomb, Iron Mountain and Granite were where we did the best. We found a lot of stuff. Blank and live ammo, spent tank round, spent artillery round, 5 gal gas cans, bayonet, jungle knife and a ton of coins. Pretty much everything associated with an Army Camp! I was able to locate some pics of what we found. I also include a US Calvary crossed sabers found at Camp Hualapai up near Prescott, AZ. It was a US Calvary post that protected settlers traveling to the west coast and a New Zealand penny found in my grandparents yard in Walden, CO. My favorite find is the 3rd Armored Division lapel pin!
  8. I'll post pics of some of the finds at the training camps as soon as I can. I've started my work week and may be next week. Work 7-on and 7-off.
  9. Those camps don't sound familiar. Ones we hunted at were going towards Desert Center, CA. Coxcomb, Iron Mountain. I'll have to do some looking up. Mainly were the 3rd Armor Trained. We also hunted some by Hyder and Horn, AZ. Also, around Blythe, CA.
  10. Now I need to try and locate a DVD on Jack Lange's Part 4. I've searched the internet and no such luck.
  11. I have yet to nugget hunt in the Yuma area or even in the southwest. I've nuggett hunted the Black Hills. A member of the local coin club I'm in is part owner of a claim in the Yuma area and will be able to hunt there when they are working it. Right now I need to replace the batteries for my GP Extreme and replace the timing cover on my Jeep. I've considered joining one of the prospecting clubs in AZ but the closest are either in Phoenix or Tucson.
  12. Thanks Gold Seeker and Steve! I've bookmarked the article and Part 4 seems to be the video I'm looking for!
  13. Thank you, Valens Legacy. Looking forward to contacting with someone local.
  14. I have been searching for a video on tweaking the settings on a GP Extreme. I believe it was a Jack Lange video. It was specifically for the Extreme. Explained the settings to use to maximize the machine to find gold. A prospecting friend of mine had it and I've since lost contact with him. It was in VHS and hoping to find it in DVD.
  15. Now that it has cooled down here it's time to drag out my Equinox 800 and GP Extreme! I've been metal detecting off and on for the last 50 years or so. Back in the late 60's, with my parents, metal detected Patton's Desert Warfare Training Camps in AZ and CA. I have quite a few artifacts that I'll post one of these days. Also, around the Fortuna Mine which is not far from where I currently reside. I've also detected for gold throughout the Black Hills in South Dakota finding some gold with my GP Extreme. Looking forward to finding more in AZ! If there is anyone on this forum in the Yuma area would like to hook up for some detecting.
