  1. Well done Matt, congratulations! That is an impressive ratio of gold : junk. Have fun with your kids.
  2. The smooth flow of electrons in a metal is the key to high conductivity. In bulk metals the electron shells of individual atoms morph into electron bands. The outer sp bands in copper, silver and gold all conduct well, but can be effected by the next inner d band that can cause scattering (i.e. lower conductivity). “This is least important in silver where the 4d-electrons are about 4 eV away from the Fermi-level (which is also why silver is colorless). But the 3dbands in copper and the 5dbands in gold are closer to the Fermi level (absorption in the blue) and they cause more scattering with the sp electrons.” Silver wins.
  3. Study, based in part at Berkeley Lab, suggests dwarf planet, Ceres, in asteroid belt may be a source of rich organic matter Two meteorites that separately crashed to Earth in 1998 after circulating in our solar system’s asteroid belt for billions of years share something else in common: the ingredients for life. They are the first meteorites found to contain both liquid water and a mix of complex organic compounds such as hydrocarbons and amino acids. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2018/01/10/organic-meteorites/ Ceres, a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt pictured here in this false-color image, may be the source of organic matter found in two meteorites that crashed to Earth in 1998. 4. Hey Paul, if you have an old first edition copy of George and Carl’s “Inside the Metal Detector” then it might be worth some money. Somebody is selling a first edition on Amazon for $299.99 !!!!!!!
  5. Well done Mitchel, three rings in a day is a nice hat trick.
  6. For me the first smart detector was the Gold Bug 2. This machine understood (and still understands) my meager skills and allows me to find gold. Its basic discrimination is straight forward, consistent and can give target insights. It is a great companion machine for my GPZ, and I can not imagine going into a gold field without it. It has withstood the test of time and aged gracefully.
  7. The first smart detector has not yet been built. It will discriminate gold from lead and make any drink on the Starbucks menu..
  8. I am not sure whether they make these crevicing tools but you can buy one from Serious Detecting on eBay for $13.95 plus $5.95 shipping. https://m.ebay.com/itm/Hook-and-Spoon-Crevice-Crevicing-Tool-Gold-Prospecting-Pan-Tool-16-5-inch-Length/272762606290?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20171010182013%26meid%3D0010be17652b43709fc69d6077a39dbc%26pid%3D100890%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D272762606116&_trksid=p2056116.c100890.m2460&action=BID
  9. The GPZ was just an expensive accessory for my 4X4 Jeep. But .... oh, the places you will go!
  10. Hi Lunk, I am still learning a lot as I add to my meteorite collection. You have really tuned your eyes (and ears) to see these highly weathered L6 meteorites. Thanks for setting a high standard for the rest of us. Randy L6 - "type 6: Designates chondrites that have been metamorphosed under conditions sufficient to homogenize all mineral compositions, convert all low-Ca pyroxene to orthopyroxene, coarsen secondary phases such as feldspar to sizes ≥50 µm, and obliterate many chondrule outlines; no melting has occurred."
  11. Well done Mitchel. Three in a day is a nice feeling.
  12. Well done IdahoPeg. Yes, lots of fun. The zip-zip-zip of a GB2 over nuggets really gets the dopamine flowing.
  13. Good luck Mitchel! I will be making the nine hour drive from SoCal in a couple of weeks. Show me a few nuggets for inspiration.
  14. Thanks for the update and summary Paul. Well done Minelab! Thank you!
  15. Besides being painful to watch the poor technique and lack of plastic shovel, this video also shows a bit of the Gold Monster's weakness (or rather individuality). When on a target you do not get the strong zip-zip-zip of a GB2. The signal is less crisp and becomes occasionally intermittent as the ground balance begins to cancel out the signal. Excessive swings back and forth over the target is not recommended. You need to regularly take the GM to the side and pump it to re-ground balance. The GM is a great machine but it's "best practices" are slightly different from other machines.
  16. Well done Rick! Always a thrill and totally motivating to hear about your trips.
  17. Here is an independent YouTube video from Detectival by one of the MineLab people:
  18. Paul, you did not disappoint. Fantastic nugget collection. Well done!
  19. Nice haul Mitchel! And a great reminder to thoroughly check your dig holes and other folks dig holes.
  20. To be interested in a new machine I need discrimination, a waterproof unit, Mac OS comparability, free income tax preparation and discount coupons for pizza, ammo and new tires.
