Help With Nokta Detector Purchase Please
OregonGregg replied to Big ted's topic in Nokta / Makro Metal Detectors
If you are going to be chasing gold and also will be coin hunting as well, you might consider the Fors Relic, although named "Relic" it is an excellent coin hunting machine and will give you the same 19khz as the Fors Gold +. The Relic offers 6 modes of search ( general, 2 tone, 3 tone, Deep, Swift and Conductive Ground.) whereas the Fors Gold + offers three. Also with the Relic you will get Iron Audio Volume and Tone Breaks. It really is a good all round machine. The Relic has worked extremely well in some of the iron infested ghost towns we hunt. Anyhow just a thought. -
To quote Steve : " but the only VLF I am inclined to use is my Makro Gold Racer. The Noktas though have better balance running a large coil and so if I was doing a lot of tailings again I would be tempted to get another Nokta. " I agree but with different reasons, I wouldn't know a gold nugget if it hit me up side the head. But for iron infested sites I hunt for coins etc, I really like the newer features that was added to the Racer 2 ( Iron Audio Volume, Tone Break) but I really like swinging the Fors CoRe much better. I was hoping that Nokta would update the original Fors CoRe as they did the Racer to Racer 2. Give the updated Fors CoRe the same features that were added to the R2. Have it share the same coils and at that point they could drop the "CoRe" name and simply call it the " Fors Coin" to go with the Fors Relic and Fors Gold machines. Would make a nice trio of machines. I just like the Nokta physical package better, hand grip , balance etc etc. However, isn't that big of a deal. I have the R2 w/ oor coil, and use that in the worst of the iron and utilize the added features and the Nokta with the 5.5 x 10 coil for areas with less trash.

Steve I read your list and like you, I try to use what I think works best for me, which currently is the Racer 2. But I am curious, do you ever keep a machine just for sentimental reason or wish you would have ? I thinned down my heard, got rid of most everything and now use a Racer 2 and a Nokta Fors Core. The only two machines I kept was my MXT and M6.....They did find me a lot of stuff over the last years and couldn't bring myself to toss then aside and throw'm on ebay. Once in a while I like to take them out and have fun and hear that good ol' Whites single tone.

A Couple Of Firsts For Me This Week!
OregonGregg replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Hey Bryan, What part E. Washington you in ? If you ever get a chance to get down this way I could meet you South of Baker City , at a little town called Durkee along the freeway. ( exit 327) from there I could take you in to a few old Ghost Town/Old Mining Town sites and try our luck. I guess another first now that I think of it..my 1st Washington trade token came from your area. . S.A. Ash, OK Saloon, Wallua, Wa. Good For One Drink. It is a alum token and surprised it came out in good shape, most alum tokens come out of the ground in rough shape. I think that is out of Pasco towards Walla Walla by Wallua Junction.Found that a few weeks ago in my area. Was the day I took the new Racer 2 out for the first time ( lots of firsts going on here) and was a good day. Also found a nice 1898s Barber Half. But ya Ghost Towns can be rewarding and frustrating when dealing with all the ferrous and even non ferrous junk. The nails I can deal with, the rusted tin flakes/small pieces is what drives you crazy at times. Rusted tin would be the equivalent of a park littered with pulltabs, except must rusted tin flakes read in the Coin range. So it really does come down to tones, a coin will most times give a smooth tone and the rusted tin a bit more scratchy tone etc. Anyhow, when time allows, get down this way and we can go hit a few sites, and maybe you could give me a few pointers on detecting for gold. gregg -
A Couple Of Firsts For Me This Week!
OregonGregg replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Well Cabin Fever since you started a "firsts" thread , Monte and I went out today and I found this: A 1926 State of Oregon Chauffeurs License (badge). Neat and kinda unique and a 1st for me. So have you had a chance to get back and hit that park some more ? gregg -
A Couple Of Firsts For Me This Week!
OregonGregg replied to Cabin Fever's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Hi Cabin Fever, Ya I agree, I like to leave the old patina on them and it makes the details stand out. Plus if you clean them up to look like a new coin then the imperfections (if they have some) will stand out. The picture of the back of the V Nickel is exactly how I like then. Its a old coin and I like them to look "old" plus still be able to see the details. But its all personal preference. Also the Quarter looks nice just enough patina so the wording and stars stands out. If it was completely clean, then it's just one bright silver shiny object. -

Congrats on the nice finds CabinFever, a great day for sure. Is always fun to find a "first", and that one of the quarters dates into the 1800's. I've found quite a few Barber Quarters, but never two on the same day. Plus that V Nickel came out of the ground looking pretty nice. A lot of times those V Nickels can come outta the ground in pretty rough shape. Which machine was you using ? gregg -
White's MX Sport - Sweet Home, We Have A Problem
OregonGregg replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in White's Metal Detectors
I'm sure the machine has no problem processing 20 tones, what does have the problem is the two grey cells in my head. 20 just seems like too much. 2, 3 or 4 works for me. But again is all personal preference. -
White's MX Sport - Sweet Home, We Have A Problem
OregonGregg replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Steve, sorry to hear about your experience with the MX Sport and thanks for the write up. I was really hoping Whites would have a home run with this one. (They need it) I think your machine is fine and that is what you get. Monte and I did a few test with one at a local dealer and we experienced about the same results as you describe, although we did not do any kind of test with the all metal or prospecting mode. Long story short, you probably will not see one listed in our signature lines. We did a basic test, three coins ( penny, dime & nickel) spaced approx. 3-3 1/2" apart from each other. We tried different settings and what not. If I did a slow deliberate sweep over the coins I could get two hits. A little faster "normal" sweep speed and I could get only one long tone (one hit) over the three coins. Not once did it ever give three separate hits indicating three coins. Yes, we realized that we had the 10"DD coil on, but we also realized as well, that with as many hours we have put on the MXT(s) and even a M6 we both felt that with a same size coil we could or should have easily got three separate hits. I couldn't decide if it was just plain slow recovery or if recovery was fine and just bad processing or both. Either way, it didn't seem to have the "get up and go" that the MXT(s) have. Maybe Monte will see this and can elaborate and get across better what we experienced. -
Whites MX Sport Waterproof Metal Detector
OregonGregg replied to Rick K - First Member's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Steve ya hit the nail on the head. I primarily hunt (90%+) of the time iron infested ghost towns etc. I do feel a little bad about picking on the MXS, in all fairness a 10"DD coil on most any machine in the areas I hunt would be close to worthless......but I see no reason at time of release to even consider a MXS for the simple fact there is no small coil, or any other coil for that matter, available for the machine other then the stock coil. Plus something else got in the way of me looking at a MXS................a R2. But someday, when they finally at least get a coil similar in size to the Eclipse 5.3 or Detech 5" I would like to give it a try and workout at one of the sites I frequent. -

Anymore, I kinda look at Whites as the old Whites and the new Whites. The old Whites with Alan H. and Carl M. produced some pretty darn good machines up till the MXT All Pro (excluding the Prizm series). I look at the MX5 as the transition period. Old management left and a new CEO and new engineers arrived. The MX5 is a good machine, but could have been better....it's the machine they started taking mfg shortcuts with. Headphone jack could have been placed where it has always been placed.....under the armcup with battery housing. No lock track to name a few. Even the Racer with its small battery housing has the headphone jack in the right spot :) The "new" Whites after a good wait, gave us the Treasure Master/Pro.......oops !!!! Now we arrived at the MX Sport. It does have a nice solid build. Is a bit heavy or seems that way do to it being a bit nose heavy with the 10"DD coil. Monte and I did get a chance to play with one at a small dealer in our area. As far as Prospecting mode we didn't try that, so can't really comment. The coin hunting modes...well to be polite....I think Steve Howard is wrong in his comment about the cute frenchie thing. We did a few simple test, granted not scientific, but....we didn't get a "wow" factor feeling....if I needed a machine to go swimming with, The MX Sport would work good. If I needed a machine to hunt dry land, I would feel very confident my M6 or MXT Pro would do that task just as well , maybe a bit better (coin hunting POV). However, I would like to give the MXS another shot, if and when they get a small coil for it. For a lot of folks and the hunting they do, I feel the 10"DD isn't doing the machine any favors especially if you encounter trashier areas. -
Whites MX Sport Waterproof Metal Detector
OregonGregg replied to Rick K - First Member's topic in White's Metal Detectors
Did Jake from StateFarm move over to Whites........geez !! that machine sounds hideous. Well I did learn a few things off the video. Whites themselves just proved what a lot of us have been saying for awhile, the 10" D2 is not a good coil.....maybe thats what lead to their " Take your machine to the next level" campaign and suggested using a Detech Ultimate. It really would have been a better test if they used the same new MX Sport coil on all three machines................ Always said, if ya wanna take a good Whites machine and make it bad, hang a D2 on it. I think in this instance, it wasn't the MXT's fault, but only the coil choice. Had he put the concentric 9" spider coil on all three machines while attempting the "lets play with a nail and quarter game" I would almost bet the results for each machine would have been very close to the same. Or had they put a D2 on the MXT and MX Sport then both would have achieved poor results. And they finally admit they prob. should have put a Trac Lock on the MX5. The MX5 despite its downfalls, no trac lock, headphone jack placement and a funky pinpoint button, actually performed well. We also learned videos can be fun to watch. I am still curious if the MX5 and MXT(s) could prevail on the Banana test....I guess we may never know. -
Whites MX Sport Waterproof Metal Detector
OregonGregg replied to Rick K - First Member's topic in White's Metal Detectors
I feel Steve hit the nail on the head. Whites just needs to overhaul their coil line up. When they introduced the MX5 with a 9" Spider Coil, I thought maybe they might start redesigning the eclipse series of coils. The fact that one of the three coils that will be available for the MX Sport is the ol' 950 coil. That coil was introduced in 1988, was a bit thinner, then fattened up through the years. Why they still have that coil around, when the 9" Spider ( a much better coil I feel) is available is beyond me. With the introduction of the MX Sport would have also been a good time to introduce a new series of coils. And i really feel they need to have a coil adapter in which to use all eclipse coils. Heck I have 5-6 eclipse coils already and a few SEF as well. If I have to buy another round of the exact same coils ( different connection) in order to use the MX Sport, it becomes less appealing. I personally really don't have a need for a waterproof machine, and if I can't use existing coils.....well I will prob pass on this machine and just keep using my MXT Pro and M6 if I want to use a Whites machine. I am still not convinced that performance wise, it will exceed the performance of the MXT(s). In fact the more I look at this machine the more convinced I am it is just an expanded Treasure Pro with functions to mimic what the MXT(s) could do and leverage the very popular MXT name. ( as far as performance, I look at this from a ghost town ,iron infested site P.O.V.) Which as of now, being I hunt iron infested sites, I need a small coil for this machine, not the three that are currently available with the machine. LOL The one advantage of the MX Sport is that it leaked out during the "cabin fever" period and gives us a chance to get our minds off winter and concoct great conspiracy theories and what not. Last winter it was the Racer buzz, this winter the MX Sport. -
I Give Up, What The Heck Is Zed?
OregonGregg replied to OregonGregg's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Thanks Steve for clearing that up. Makes sense now. Kinda like Monte and his " oor" coils -
ZED I have it narrowed down that GPZ 7000 = ZED I tried googling it and get directed to forums and people with forum post stating they love their "ZED" Went to Minelab.com and the closet I could find was ZVT (Zero Voltage Transmission) So I give up, decided to ask here. Is ZED just a nickname for the GPZ 7000 or does it actually stand for something ? Anyhow have been reading all the post and keep running into ZED so curiosity got me and trying to figure out ZED. gregg
