  1. Goldbrick,

I seem to recall Spot sold insurance policies that would pay you for rescue expenses twice a year, if needed? Does the Epirb company do this? An emergency rescue must cost a small fortune I should think and could break your bank account?

This is from ResQLink website under F&Q..

"Q: Is there a subscription fee for beacon registration or rescue service?

Beacon registration is free, should you ever have to activate your beacon, rescue is free in most parts of the world.

  2. AJR and Wes, I don't blame you for being skeptical per a 406 EPIRB reception in canyon areas. Do I have personal knowledge that they work great every where but underground? No I do not. Did I do research before spending my dollars on an EPIRB? That's a big yes. Most things in life don't work at 100% efficiency 100% of the time. My research tells me that in a life and death situation the 406 EPIRB offers the best chance of me being able to contact emergency services.

I am not trying to start a pissing match with SPOT owners but 5 years ago when I did my research, the internet was rife with complaints of poor to no reception in many places by spot owners. I could not find one instance of some one setting off their 406 EPIRB and emergency help not arriving. Do some research yourself, your mileage may vary, after all mine is 5 years stale.

The other advantage of an EPIRB is no monthly subscription fee. Once you buy it all you pay for is battery replacement ( every 5 years on my model). Of course you can not chat up your family and friends with one, that honor belongs to the SPOT.

Whatever option you decide on make sure you take it with you, doesn't work if setting on your work bench at home. Mine lives permanently in my prospecting back pack. I convinced my brother to get one and he used the holster to mount it on his suspenders.

     Goldbrick,

I feel it's worth mentioning that from the research I have done and from reading reviews the cost of the battery replacement is around $150, another fact that needs mentioning for someone who has a much older EPIRB is that the units that use 121.5MHz and 243MHZ are no longer satellite detectable and these persons should buy a newer model that uses the 406MHz .

  3. Where can I get the canvas water bags , never seen them before? How do they keep the water cool?

    -Tom

You'll pay a good sum for one of the original "Desert Water Bag" flax water bags, you can find some on Ebay, I don't think they're being made any longer, at least I couldn't find anyone that still makes them, the original company that made them sold out to Coleman and it seems Coleman stop making them in the late 60s early 70s, but you can still find "Desert Storm" water bags made for our soldiers for Desert Storm that work exactly on the same principal, they're made from flax just like the old desert water bags, but are not the same shape and have string at the top/mouth to keep them closed instead of a cap/stopper, not ideal but if it works what the hey, desert water bags keeps water cool by evaporation just like a swamp cooler works, which is why most people keep them tied on the front of their vehicle, the air flowing over the bag while moving induced more evaporation and thus more cooling to the water inside, you need to soak the water bags for about 48 hours to totally saturate the flax material and then them fill with water, the outside of the bag will always be wet and as such the water will evaporate which causes a cooling affect to the contents.

Desert Storm bags, this is the cheapest source I found, but you can find them many places, especially army surplus stores, etc...

Other sources for the Desert Storm bags.

Actually I did find a source for the original style Desert water bags, but they're expensive..

  4. Wondering when the release date and pricing info?

If you watch the video posted by Steve above, the introduction of the GoFind starts at the 36:45 mark and continues about to the end of the video, the Minelab Rep stated that they would be price from $179 (GoFind 20) to $309 (GoFind 60), and the possible release date was stated around mid-May/early summer.

The price point is mentioned at around the 39:00 mark.

The released date is mentioned at around the 51:45 mark.

  5. PM popup notifications or email notifications can be enabled or disabled in your settings. Pop ups do not works on all browsers.

I believe IDAuFinder is referring to the "InBoxNow" popup ad that is sometimes at the top right of the main forum page, it almost fooled me once but I realized it was an ad before I click on it.

  6. Here's a link to 2 specimens found yesterday, no story posted, just photos and weights of 12.2 ounces and 4.25 ounces!!! jaw-dropping%5B1%5D.gif

Not sure of the truth in this report, the thing that has me wondering is that the larger specimen sure looks to have had an acid treatment/soaking to clean it up/remove some of the quartz and usually that would take more than overnight in most cases? idunno.gif

I would love the hear more about these finds and if indeed this is a genuine report.

  7. Well said Steve!

There's still good ground left with gold to be found, but it's privately owned land but most the land owners aren't giving permission to hunt most of these private lands, the gold rush on public land is the gold bearing land that's about played out!!

  8.  I posted this info at the first of this month on many of the gold forums, not many seemed interested and most of those that responded think it will only apply to lode claims, but I think otherwise, I don't see how this cannot affect both lode and placer claims, it's a backdoor attempt to completely change/get rid of the 1872 mining laws, IMHO!!

Most seems to have the "let's wait and see what this is really about" mindset, once they see "what it's about" it will be too late.

I have recommended that everyone contact their representatives to stop this budget proposal before it's too late.

This leasing and royalty plan is what all the environmentalists have been going after for many years now and they now have a partner in the White House that will try his best to make it happen if we don't speak up and make some noise!!

  9. It would appear that if someone with a CTX wanted to spend the money for the lower GPZ shaft, 3 hard rubber bushings of the correct size and a through bolt would make it possible to mount the CTX coil on the shaft, the offset cable of the CTX coil I don't would be much of an issue as long as the center rubber bushing didn't prevent the cable from entering the GPZ shaft.

As you said, if money isn't an issue, it looks like it's a doable way to have a longer shaft for a CTX.
