Whatever insurance you may find that will cover the theft of a metal detector, just listing it with your insurance company may not be enough, make sure you have detailed clear photos or video of the detector and all the accessories, this includes clear photos of the model numbers, serial numbers, and have the receipts if possible and store all of this proof in a fireproof safe or in a safety deposit box, if you have ever tried to get insurance companies to cover any losses from your home, car, etc. either from fires, flood, or thief, you will know these photos,videos, receipts are a must if you expect any coverage of your losses, especially full replacement coverage, this applies to anything you are expecting your insurance to replace fully or part of the value under a insurance policy if a loss occurs, some items such as jewelry, art or similar items that have no way to determine current value I would suggest you have a fairly recent appraisal to expect to get full replacement value under your policies!!! Don't learn the disappointment of finding out some items will not be covered by your insurance because you couldn't prove you had them and or what their values were the hard way by not having documented proof of such!! As we all know insurance can be more expensive then we would like and most of the time it's never needed, but do your own due diligence if you expect that insurance to live up to your expectations of why you purchased it to begin with, I can assure you the insurance companies will do their very best to not cover all of the losses you hoped it would cover and in some cases none at all if you can't provide positive proof of the losses in your claim!

I you're finding lots of trash, it tells me that not many detectors have been in the area, so keep beeping, after you get most of the trash out of the way is when you could start finding nuggets that were hidden/masked by the trash. Don't hesitate to going back over ground that you have already detected especially if you do so perpendicular to the direction you detected it before, many nuggets have been found by doing this, this is especially applies in areas where you have found nuggets.

Jason, I can see where you're right with the companies being behind the times when comparing the electronics of detectors to computers and smartphones of today and as the younger tech savvy generation future detectorists are getting into this hobby I can see this being the future of detectors. That being said and in respect of not hijacking this topic, maybe you could start a new topic on this subject and see what the interest of others on this subject is.

I agree that having detectors that are tweakable/hackable would most likely not be a great selling point, while there are some detectorists that have the tech know how to do the hacking to personalize a detector to their liking, a large percentage of detectorists will most likely make the detector less sensitive than it was originally, if not completely useless. On another note, I'm not all that knowledgeable on how detectors and coils are tuned to each other, but if I'm not mistaken a coil has nothing but winding inside it with no electronics, so therefore I believe that a detector is tuned to the particular a coil/s instead of the coil/s being tuned to the detector, anyone with knowledge of this tuning process please add your input.

Areas of once deep overburden that has been removed to expose new ground, and I agree on the tree root balls being good to check out in good gold bearing areas.

From the statement you just made it's appears to me that the Ace series is the detector to buy for your MIL, they are a great value for the money and work very well for their price range, easy to operate for a beginner and can be sold as used for little lost in investment if your MIL losses interest, or you can keep it for friends to try out their hand at a new hobby!!!

Steve, I believe I have seen every piece of gold you've ever have found and posted photos of, at the beginning of this last entry for 2013, I was puzzled that I didn't remember ever seeing that "half pounder with cheese", and at the end of the story I read why, thanks for posting it!!!

I agree, I have felt that way for a many number of years, it's a shame that a good new vehicle now cost as much as a small home, I have never bought a new vehicle, if it isn't at least 3 to 4 years old and has depreciated substantially, I'm not interested. That being said, I could change my mind if I hit the lottery!!

Steve, it maybe just the photo of the GPZ 7000 but it appear to me that not only is the battery bigger, but it seems that the housing is longer than the CTX 3030's housing, what do you think?

I have the Magnum 500 like the one posted by Steve above, as like Steve's it the older version which I bought from AMDS (Alaska Mining and Diving Supply) I'm guessing it's at least 10 to 12 years old, maybe older, I bought it back when Steve still was there, it still works well. I also have one that's accurate to 1/1000 of a gram but I don't remember the manufacturer of it, I don't use it that often and would have to remember where it is and dig it out to see who makes it.

I would think the only way to get the mining companies to dump the overburden is to convince them it would save them money to do so, there's no way they would even consider it if it's going to cost them more money to dump the overburden elsewhere, e,g, money talks.

I agree with Fred, once you find a nice nugget, who cares if your detector falses while you take a selfie with the nugget!!!

Rumblefish, this site will give you some idea of the value of those coins and you will be guessing at the condition of each coin, but keep in mind the values listed are for PCGS graded coins, it would cost you to have them graded but if the coin is in very, very good condition and or a "key" date, e.g. meaning a rare dated coin, in such a case the cost of having them graded would be well worth it over selling them ungraded. http://www.pcgs.com/prices/
