Hi I'd be very interested in this badge and seeing more of it. Please send me a message if possible.

The OP of this topic hasn't been back on the forum since last September, so he may not ever see your post....BUT I'll "mention" him which may "notify" him by email and he may return.

  2. From what I found online it appears the token is from Salt Lake City and if so I found this old news paper article in the Salt Lake Telegram from 1923 that is reporting on what appears to be baseball teams, one of the teams is sponsored by "Browning Auto", which could be where that token came from, but who knows, I searched for them with "1923" as part of the search and couldn't find any other info.

    Welcome to the forum "D",

A bit more history on the house would be helpful! Like year built, style, features like a usable attic, basement, large crawl spaces, old solid wood doors, brickwork etc!

But I'd say yes on saving your money on buying another detector for indoors! Use the 600 to thoroughly check the yard numerous times and directions! The larger the object, the deeper your detector may pick it up, within its limits! Mason jars, and coffee cans were a few of the containers to bury valuables in! But many people were very creative in hiding their items; especially indoors! If any old furniture came with the house, sometimes they will have a hidden drawer or space to conceal items! Other than that, the sky is the limit for fixed objects of, or in the house!

Spend a little time inside and visualize where things might be safe, but accessible with a bit of effort on the part of the owner! Most people that hid items, want to have access to them when needed in an emergency; financial or otherwise! They won't want to tear down a wall, etc, if they ran short one month to pay the bills, or there was a house/wild fire! A few examples would be a short piece of floorboard, or moulding, that is held on with a single nail or screw, or just well fitted to secure, but still be accessible to add or subtract from!

Now hoarders are a different mindset onto themselves, and all bets, or common sense are off!

Good hunting, and be careful poking your hands in dark and dusty places! Some critter my not appreciate that!🍀👍👍

Joe read his post again, he doesn't have a detector yet, he's considering the Equinox 600 or the 800.

  5. IMHO save your money, most metal detectors don't work so well inside houses due to EMI, but more importantly there are so many nails, screws, wiring and ductwork, etc. all made of metal that you will never know what the detector is signaling on, you would have better luck just tearing out the wall/floor coverings and looking for any treasure that way!

Thanks for the info, GS! Do you think the 1907 penny would be accurately indicative of the period? It’s in exceptionally good condition. The camp site seemed somewhat small so perhaps not used for long. There are only about 3-4 leveled off areas for tents and what could have been some sort of wood deck? Didn’t seem like enough wood for a whole shack.

Yes I would say the penny could date the jar which were just starting to come into use by that date, if so it would be one of the first "threaded" jars made, it seems the earliest ones were possibly made around 1906 but first advertised in 1908.....BUT the jar could be and most likely would be of a later date depending on how long the site was used.

That penny could of been 10 or more years old when lost, or lost in 1907.

Here's another link on Vaseline jars and their history.

Oh, perhaps that was worded wrong, I'd never complain and of course he super happy to find a bigger piece, but I really enjoy the challenge of the smallest of small pieces, I get more of a thrill out of finding a really tiny bit than I do a .1 of a gram for example which is probably my most common size find.

I was just giving you a hard time, I know how it feels to even find a very very small piece of gold, or any gold for that matter!!

I'm just as thrilled finding a bit the size in the photo below as I am a 1-gram nugget, where as it appears some people wouldn't even bend over to pick up a bit a hundred times the size of this one

I do it for the fun, the challenge, so finding a bit like this is often harder than a much bigger bit.  So for me, the smaller the better, always a great feeling finding the tiniest bits.

I have no interest in selling any gold I find, even if I was fortunate enough to stumble on a lot, I'd keep it all, my little throphys have value to me far more than their money value.

Simon, I'm going to call you out on "the smaller the better", I can just see you now cussing up a storm 🤬 because you found a 1/4 ounce nugget instead of a .009 piece!!! 🤣

This is more unbelievable because the 1/4 nugget is a much more rare of a find where you are than the .009 piece.

So now after being educated on the reality of a claim app, I think my next step will be to figure out how to use Google earth to its potential, with adding all the right layers, and maybe a GPS?  This should be interesting.  An old dog trying to teach himself new tricks.

OR.......... just use or even better become a member of My Land Matters and use it to get all that you could do on Google Earth and more, it's all been done for you and it's updated as often as it's possible to do!!

All you have to do is learn to use it.

Thanks Chuck. I actually would like to see or hear what people found or see in those mines. Never under a mine just curious. I don't reckon I would risky myself into a shaft. If anyone has mine pics please show us 😸

You also mentioned 'some of it went down the hill side'. Sorry what you mean by that? I didn't get it. 🙂

    Ethan

One hazard not mentioned and has killed people who go into old mines is poisonous gases that build up down in some mines, you usually can't smell the gas and one lung full is usually enough to kill a person or at least make you pass out and then you die as you breathe more of the bad air.

When the mines were active the miners had ventilation installed to vent out any bad air and pump in fresh air.

What Ridge Runner is saying about some of it went downhill is, when the miners were removing the gold bearing ore they would haul it out of the mine and then had chutes that they dumped it in to get the ore downhill where they would process it to remove the gold, there could still be some gold bearing ore at the bottom of the hill that spilled out or was never processed.

Absolutely correct. I scratched it and it was bright and shiny like aluminum. Looks like maybe an animal stepped in it and left a paw print. Probably some people camping there at one point and melted some beer cans or something and animals came around looking for leftovers. When we found it my kids and I were excited it could be something valuable like a meteorite but it was a fun experience nonetheless. Thank you so much for the feedback.

Poor critter who stepped on it must of got one hell of a hot foot!!

I would keep it just because of the paw print on it!!

I just remembered  to check the software version that my Axiom is running and it’s running 1.47.0 so I guess I should update it……..?

thats the same version mine is running Jeff and as far as I know that is the current version for the Axiom

The latest version is 1.47.2, Steve posted it couple of weeks ago, not sure if this latest version is available yet but should be soon if not by now.

EDIT: I see you both have seen this topic, so you both already know about the possible update.
