Way cool! Congrats on your first gold. I still remember mine, a small one with a single little diamond.

Using iron bias definitely has its plusses and minuses. Tom

Took My New Nox 800 To The Jungle This Week
Jackpine replied to AlbyM's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Thanks for posting the finds, they are truly amazing. Being able to hunt 16th century Spanish Colonial sites must seem like a dream come true. Tom -
Which Frequency Is Running In Each Mode?
Jackpine replied to vive equinox's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
So where does this statement fit in? since it is a "key difference in technology" The claim is better processing of the received signal but what if ML is keeping other details close to the vest on this. Using this information to vary the frequencies used in the muti-freq sequence on the fly as the coil is swept over varying ground is one thought that comes to mind. Tom -
Equinox 800 Wireless Phones Made By Miccus?
Jackpine replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Brian I agree. With my Koss QZ-99's plugged directly into my friends 800 I was good to go. Had read on another forum that they fit into the jack which they did. Tom -

I'm not a salt water hunter but wouldn't tracking have an advantage on beaches where blacks sand layers exist? Especially if the layers vary in depth and intensity? Tom

Congrats on those "firsts" Steve. We must think alike as 12-13 and 17 up are the settings I had decided on as well. Set to high tone and low volume on all the rest. For coin hunting my old sites the comparison I want to try is Park 1 vs Field 1. Mainly to see if there is any difference in iron handling. Tom

From the manual" As stated it's a reference threshold which allows you to hear the nulling out of the audio over rejected targets. That is it's sole purpose, nothing more, nothing less. Running a slight threshold when in all metal is an old habit I suffer from at times but really serves no purpose on the 800. On the X-T 705 when used in iron sites I at times notch out the most offending iron number(s) and use the amount of nulling to determine the sensitivity setting. For example if upwards of 90% of iron tones come in at 6 notch it out and if this results in almost constant nulling then lower sensitivity to a level that reduces the deeper/fainter iron responses. Whether this is useful or not on the 800 with it's ability to adjust iron audio level and iron bias settings I will have to experiment with. Gold mode threshold is a different animal altogether. Experienced prospectors spend quite a bit of time tweaking the threshold level to suit the site, their hearing ability and preferred headphones. Perhaps Steve will chime in with some thoughts or links to discussions on how to set it up.

Sweet! Love those high Kt rings. Tom

Thanks for mentioning about the coil moving well in the water. I was a bit worried about that aspect. Tom

Thanks for the link Steve. That answered my question, I will be using a good grade of silicone to bond the lexan to the coil and forego using the factory coil cover. Tom

Video - Fisher F75 Versus Minelab Equinox
Jackpine replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Used my buddies 800 the other day for 4 hours. At first it seemed nose heavy and was starting to get to me, then I realized he had the lower rod extended too far. Shortened it up a notch and it made all the difference in the world. I probably could have went another notch and still had it far enough in front of my feet to work but it would have cut into the swing width too much for my style. Set the way I had it the balance felt just as good as an F75 with the added benefit of a little lower weight. I give Minelab kudos for what is IMO a combination of good mechanical design and intuitive operation. -
XP Deus Detectors Being Sold
Jackpine replied to Jackpine's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
I have not used or even seen a Deus in person. Traded in the F75 on the Equinox but I'm hanging on to the 705 as a backup(?) fresh water wader due to the 9" concentric coils. -
I like the 720 but for my fresh water wading in sand I would prefer the small holes be at the front or tip of the scoop. Reason being in the clear water I hunt tiny items that filter thru are now at the sands surface. With the small holes at the front you can then dip out a small amount of sand with the tip and you have the target. I have hundreds of hours wading the lakes around here and this would be a huge boon for me. I should call Chuck and run this past him.

Looking at the classified section of another forum and on the first page there are 8 Deus for sale, for trade or marked as sold. Must be quite a few comparisons being made out there.

Your Thoughts: Best Pin Pointer?
Jackpine replied to TennesseeDigger's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
This one isn't waterproof. There are 4 sensitivity settings, at high it will hit a dime close to 2" and hit hard at around 1.5" . You can set it to vibrate, audio alert or both at the same time. Neither are very strong, the audio is weak for my hearing so I used the vibrate function which worked fine but might not work so good with heavy gloves. At 89.00 I wasn;t expecting top notch perfomance but it works good enough. Tom Just tried it with heavy gloves and it works fine no noticeable loss so forget what I said earlier. The sound from the vibration is louder to my ears than the audio alert beeps. LOL -
I have never found any of the smaller engagement rings in Platinum. The 3 large bands found over the years have read nickel and higher. A half ouncer I found rang up tab. Link deleted since Findmall Forum update broke all old links Tom

I don't ponder such things, I just trust that ML's engineers know their stuff when it comes to ground handling. LOL Tom
