6 Inch Concentric Or DD Coil For Coin Hunting?
tboykin replied to Ridge Runner's topic in White's Metal Detectors
All depends on where you live. I think West of the Rockies is DD, East is Concentric. I'd love to see a 6" concentric for the MX Sport, and if the demand is there we will build them. Personally I prefer concentric for pinpointing/targeting and DD for general searching. Wish I could have both on one coil. -
Depending on the type of rock... a pulse machine is a better choice. You can spend anywhere from 1k to 10k on a pulse machine built for gold...

Thank you guys for watching it and letting me know what you thought. Personally - I am happy with the way it turned out and feel lucky to have been there to capture the event. On a professional level - White's might not be equal to Minelab or XP in terms of bleeding edge technology. But our company is dedicated to the hobby of metal detecting and the people who love it. I am damn proud to be a part of that, and I think there's a lot to be said for a company with that kind of heart. That is what drew me to them back in January. For most of us this is a hobby, and it's easy to get caught up on things like which machine outperforms another. At the end of the day it's about the time we spend doing something we love, and passing that along to the next generation. "Your machine might get you a few more inches, but eventually we all end up 6 feet under"

Sensitivity pro tip (that goes across all models) - Don't just run straight to maximum sensitivity. You will hear every chirp and squeal on the tiniest bits of metal. Even at 4-6 SENS you have great depth and target id. DISC pro tip - Discrimination has uses in all modes, not just coin and jewelry. Prospecting, all-metal --- USE IT. It won't silence the VCO audio but it will keep the VDI numbers off of your screen for rejected ranges. Great for trashy sites where you want to hear everything but have some target ID to help make the choice "to dig or not to dig." Swing speed pro tip - The MX Sport (with the updated firmware) is one of the fastest machines I have swung (yes, even compared to the Deus). Walk slow, swing fast unless you are using a lot of SAT. SAT pro tip - use only what you need. Can mask out small items and decrease depth. Ground balance pro tip - Automatic is fine, but in challenging situations like salt or varying degrees of mineralization I prefer LOCKED.

Nice meeting you out there. How'd the MX Sport perform in that alkali dust bowl?
-
Yep.

Will have a video to share with you guys on Friday of the hunt. Was great to meet those that were there!

Back from Rye Patch, what a hunt. Highly recommended if you have not been. We did send an email to registered MX Sport users before posting on our website. Definitely a good idea to fill out your warranty registration in order to get updates on products. To folks who have been watching the MX Sport rollercoaster ride - the only way you will know if it's the right one for you is to put some time in on one and see if it's the right fit. Nothing wrong with reading others' opinions on machines... but at the end of the day it's up to you to "vote with your wallet" and make your own decisions. If you are on the fence about the updated units, keep your eyes peeled - I think you will like what you see from MX Sport owners.

Tough to say - they are different designs (DD vs 4x6). Take this with a grain of gold since it's air testing - but I compared the African coil to the stock 6x10 on a small flake and the concentric was able to pick it up at about 3" vs 1-1.5" on the stock coil. I would imagine the depth on the 6" concentric would be even better when compared to the 4x6, but I can test it to see first hand. The 4x6 is a great choice for what you are doing, but the 6" concentric might be a good compliment to it. I think this coil will be well suited to places like Rye Patch where there is small or quartz-y gold close to the surface that the best P.I. machines walk right over. Impressed by its performance so far but will need to do more testing this weekend on-site. As a fisherman I have more fun catching 30 fish per day vs. one big fish every year, so it's right up my alley. Will bring this coil (and have donated 2 already) to the Rye Patch Nugget Shoot.

Bob, I will see you there. If I get enough beers in me you will have bigger issues than getting an "OK"
-
Chuck, we have the 950 style concentric for the MX Sport - https://www.whiteselectronics.com/product/950-sport-coil/ From what I'm hearing from our testers - the 7" Detech doesn't loose much depth but has better performance in terms of separation and speed. Detech knows how to make good coils. We will be working on more coils now that production is back up, so we here ya. With how the small concentric is performing on the GMT it might be a good idea to look into that type of shooter coil for the MX Sport.
-
I'll see what I an do. Maybe something specific to Detector Prospector? Also still willing to send Steve H. a new one with our 7" Detech if he's interested. I hear that coil is killer on small gold... One of the things I've learned about the MX Sport in regards to prospecting - when in All-Metal or Prospecting Modes you have the ability to VISUALLY discriminate ranges of VDI. This doesn't silence the audio, but keeps the discriminated numbers from displaying on screen. So if you're in "Junk Town" you can notch out the junk, still hear the zip, but know you have a higher chance of a good target when the VDI displays the range you are interested in. Really helpful for places where there are bits of can slaw or iron that drive you nuts. I'll probably bring mine to Rye Patch this weekend if any of you are interested (and will be there).

I believe the TJ's are rated to tow 3k lbs with the AW4 (which this sounds like it has since it has the tranny cooler). Mostly due to wheelbase--- pulling isn't the issue but stopping/handling is. How much does your boat/trailer weigh? Since it sounds like it wasn't driven much definitely check the coolant in the rad. If left to sit too long you can get rust in the coolant which can make for unpleasant surprises when you're givin' 'er hell in 4LO. The 4.0's last to 300k miles easy, and there are some on the road with 500k plus without a rebuild. Easy to work on and it sounds like the rest of the goodies are top-notch. Good luck Art, hope you end up with it at a fair price.

Too much. The '06 has the legendary "Iron Maiden" 4.0L Straight 6 if memory serves. I'd offer $17,500 with a ceiling of 19k. The 4.0 is very easy to work on, great low RPM torque but has a couple quirks compared to the newer 3.6 and 3.8L. Things to look into on the I6 - check the coolant both in the radiator and overflow. If there's any rust walk away. The 4.0's can have a hard time keeping cool on the trail so any goop in the water jackets can make things worse. Also check the curb idle. The IAC and TPS are quick to fail on these Jeeps, as is the NSS in the AW4 (but I would guess this Jeep has the AX15 5 speed). These are all easy fixes but can give you some room to bargain. If it's really a Rubicon it should have Dana 44's front and rear with steeper gearing. You can tell these from the 35 and 30 that vanilla Jeeps have by the shape of the pumpkin. With the 3.5 lift and 4.0 you are looking at 13/16 mpg city/hwy if you keep your foot out of the gas.

Casting Call For Gold Prospecting TV Show
tboykin replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I don't think they have made their decisions yet. I used to work in TV and it takes a while to get a show up and running. Lots of hemming and hawing. But I have zero preconceptions about what will happen, it was good to be on camera and share my experiences with them. Also a great litmus test for nerves when you know people will be dissecting the footage! -
Hey guys - the "GMT Super Pulse" coils work on all Dual Field models. We have a bunch of coils for the GMT (including big honking 14ers) and TDI. These items are just taking up room and I came up with this idea after having a garage sale at home. Priced at right around factory cost to move quickly. The gold GMT went pretty quick, but I think the gold MXT Pro is still for sale. Very rare! Think John might be interested?

Casting Call For Gold Prospecting TV Show
tboykin replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Went great. They want a younger/fit guy and I fit the bill in that regard. I don't have the experience you all do but I have been working on that since I got bit. They interviewed me twice, during the second one they said the network really liked me. I doubt I will get cast but it's always fun to try new things. To me that's what it's all about, and what got me into detecting in the first place. -
"It's just that easy" The video looks great. The real question is - who is Steve Herschbach's agent?

Sam at Armadillo Mining asked me to get the word out about the unlawful shutdown of motorized placer mining in Oregon. Unfortunately the miners fighting this illegal ban are heavily out-gunned by various environmental groups. The politics of all this are too complicated for my lizard brain, but I hope it's ok to pass the info along. If not, delete this post. Sam and the others at Armadillo are good people, and the Bohmkers are legends in the prospecting community out here. Just want to help them continue their heritage. A battle this big gets expensive real fast, and they had the idea to have a raffle to help with the legal costs. It's a small group of miners vs. the state, enviros, and miles of red tape and loopholes. You can help them out and have a chance to win something yourself with this raffle. Top prize is a half pound of GOLD, they will also be giving away a metal detector, prospecting equipment, and you don't even have to show up to the drawing to win. I think it's a good cause and the fact that you can win something for your support is a good angle for them. Check out the attached flyer and link for the details. Just sent off our care package for this. I will do my best to make it out myself, can't wait to meet you guys!

The guys who use the V3i for prospecting don't really like to share that info. But it's out there. Prospecting Scan shows you real-time changes in ground mineralization. Very useful for locating paystreaks... https://www.whiteselectronics.com/find/v3i-and-ganes-creek-gold/

Thought this was a good tip on using a detector like the GMT in conjunction with traditional techniques. Just need a machine that can track black sand to locate a paystreak, mark the deposit with stakes and start processing material. Horrendous 144p resolution (filmed with potato) but info is solid!

Last Night A Prospecting Pick Saved My Life
tboykin replied to tboykin's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
I can see where you're coming from. I do care about coming home, and so far I've made it back every time. I've been stabbed, hit by a car, multiple concussions (explains the stupidity), and almost drowned at sea. I feel I know my limitations, but what you say carries weight. I would feel bad to endanger others based on my choices. But I also value my freedom, and I consider all of my "near-life experiences" part of that basic right. Kind of a tough call for me... If I can't make it out of a situation on my own I don't deserve to be rescued.
