And the elephant? What's that all about? ?
That's an old yank phrase from the gold rush days. Blokes would head to California to "see the elephant."
Elephant in this case is our new gold detector, the Goldmaster 24k.

Hey guys! White's Electronics will be attending the Rye Patch Nugget Shoot this weekend. We'll be donating a Goldmaster 24k as a prize at the event.
Also, thanks to the team putting this on we will have a test garden at the event to demo the Goldmaster 24k. This is where you can get your hands on it, swing it over buried targets, and maybe even find some real gold! We won't be renting an airplane to skydive out of, but I may tuck and roll out of my '96 Suburban for the sake of showmanship.
This event is free to the public, put on by the GPAA of Northern Nevada, Parks Department, and other groups. It's one of my favorite organized hunts in the USA. More information.
Here's an idea of what the event is like (video from 2016) -

That is really interesting! First pan had lots of tiny quartz in it so I will assume the clay is made up of that since it's so white. I think I will get a grout/mud mixer and haul a drill out there.
-
I found some good gold in clay. Sticky, greasy stuff but shows promise. So I ask you old sourdoughs, what is the best way to process this material? I have been smooshing it by hand and then panning but it's not very efficient!

Thanks Cipher. Yes, those White's garage sales always have some great deals and interesting oddball items. Seeing those sales makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one who accumulates years of crap in his garage ...
I don't know what I was thinking, but I bought one of the AF108 military mine detectors. I'm a military guy and thought this would be cool, I guess. (from their garage to mine). They had two of them and they both sold within the first few hours. There's practically nothing online about the AF108. Is this a PI detector? At least now I will have crashed UFO searching covered ...
The AF108 is a PI detector. Ships with OD green harness. Will be a great collector's item or prop for a movie!

Sometimes there's enough iron in serpentine to make it jump onto my pick magnet! Might be worth a check.

GoldSearch Australia was the Whites Importer and I believe that they use to supply the other 3 dealers.
We ship directly to a few dealers in Australia, not just one.

Here's a link: https://www.whiteselectronics.com/product/tdi-beachhunter/
Performance-wise our field testers have told us it's in between an SL and Pro. This is likely due to the hard-wired coil being more sensitive without the connector inline.

Tom,
If we were to provide suitable new coils to White's for fitting then would our warranty remain intact. Would we get a credit on the stock dual field coil?
Thanks,
Tony
Still working out the details.

Hi there folks, I have been prospecting for the better part of two years now (I’m 23) and have for the most part stuck to my grandparents property in California finding pickers and occasional small nuggets. I’m now living in Eugene going to school at the university and trying to find the time to get out and put my SDC to work. From what I have heard there is pretty great gold in Southern Oregon and I’m just putting the feelers out to see if anyone might have some useful advise or resources that could point me in the right direction. I’d also like to start making connections with folks in the community so feel free to let me know if you would like to let a young guy tag along or if you have a need for a big truck

There is detectable gold up the Calapooia, Quartzville Creek, and then lots down in the Grants Pass area. But there is a lot of private/claimed land and the residents of Jefferson can be strong enforcers of claim boundaries.
Best bet is to do research and scouting before detecting as online info can be inaccurate sometimes, at least in my experience.

We need a Lithium battery system...... a run time of 4-5 hours with the standard NiMH pack isn't enough when you are out in the water and the car is a mile away for a battery swap. Might have to try one of those 3 x 18650 (3400mah) battery setups. There is a guy who 3D prints the battery pack (For units using the standard 8 AA Penholder) but will this fit the TDI (Beach Hunter) case ?
Tony
I have a couple of these printed packs. They will fit in the case with some modification. So will the super hot 16v battery pack I have.
Officially White's can't endorse a 16v battery due to the increased chances of component wear and heat generated by the large caps on the board.
The 18650's diameter prevents use in this waterproof case without a slight modification (2 minutes of Dremel action) on the inside of the case. This may void your warranty.
The 14500's have the right size to use in a battery holder but usually come out about 750mAh. You could do 4 x 2, get 14.8 volts out of it but only have 1500 mAh. Less time to hunt than the OEM pack.
All of these things are options for intrepid DIYers, but our goals were 1) release this in a timely manner before the competition 2) keep the price of the detector reasonable and 3) don't push the hardware to the point of failure.
I know it's not ideal, but at the worst you can carry an extra battery in a waterproof case or baggie with your wallet/keys/phone. And at least you will still have a nice deep seeking PI before fall of 2018.
This project is more of a "Huh, that's a good idea. Why wasn't this done before?" vs. making a huge engineering project out of it.

This is my idea of a great video. Show me the features of the detector and how they work. I want to know how the detector sounds. Leave out all the "trying to prove stuff" parts. Just show what the machine can do or possibly not do. I also like that some basic tips were thrown in.
The only part I found confusing was the tone id described as low tone meaning low conductive and high tone being high conductive. Gold is a low conductor. I believe this should have been discussed as low tone meaning ferrous, and high tone meaning non-ferrous. Page 12 of the GMK Advanced Guide:
"Tapping the Music button toggles between two different audio modes. With the Music Icon ON, the GM24k will produce 2 distinct beeps, one high and one low, for different types of targets. The higher tone has a better chance of being a non-ferrous target (gold, aluminum, silver, brass, etc.), and the lower tone has a better chance of being ferrous (iron, hot rocks, etc.).
With the Music Icon OFF, the GM24k will produce a standard VCO all-metal “zip” sound on targets. This mode is generally preferred by experienced prospectors due to the nuances of the sound and perceived sensitivity to small targets. "
It is obvious the Goldmaster 24K has features lacking in the White's GMT - ground balance offset, target id numbers, ferrous tone id, ability to completely block not just ferrous tones but high end ferrous wrap, ability to set ferrous breakpoint (iron cancel mode only?), backlight, and yes folks, a volume control! I have handled the MX 7 box design and find it very comfortable and well balanced. This looks like a serious upgrade from the GMT for sure.
That is a good note. This was a one-man-band setup, no script - camera on tripod was my only friend. But I should probably do a better job of listening back to make sure I get everything right. Next time!

Steve and tboykin, Thanks for that information......local beaches down here can be a mixture of both with some showing nice golden/white sand on top but a good distinctive layer of black sand about 6" - 8" down (kills the VLF machines). I nearly always dig deep "test" holes to see if I am dealing with this "crappy stuff" because from the surface, you would never know it's there and can't work out why your detector is behaving so squirrelly!
I sometimes wondered where a machine will GB to....the top surface (being neutral) or the black magnetic stuff further down?
Oooohhhhh White's..........you're killin' me.....?
Luckily it's winter down here so I can wait (a bit)...
Tony
Most machines that have a single ground balance point will balance to a combination of what's under the coil. White sand usually lacks the type of minerals detectors look at for ground balancing, so I would guess that you will be balancing out mostly the black sand.
Here we have some difficult beach areas with black sand, basalt rocks, and then of course the conductive salt. Definitely pulse territory!

Gosh, it looks like we do have a waterproof TDI after all!
Ships with a Heavy Duty battery for longer run time and also has increased sensitivity and stability due to the hardwired coil. A bonus we did not expect!
Want a mono coil? Coiltek? Miner John? Etc? We are working on setting that up in "White's Custom Shop." Or if you are handy you can DIY (note: this will void your warranty).
Sorry for not having more info earlier. We like to tell our dealers first and wait until products are ready to ship.
Now excuse me while I jump in the Klamath River and find some nice nugs in the bedrock.

Well if it turns out to be the TDI SL board then am I right in thinking that the overall depth won't be much more, if any, when compared to the Surfmaster Dual Field? Obviously some more operational flexibility with the extra controls on the SL.
What else am I missing?
Tony
Here on the west coast the difference between a TDI SL and Surf PI is about 4-6 inches on a gold ring.

There are some interesting things that happen when you hard-wire a coil directly to a board. Kinda like running headers to straight pipes on a small block....

You're doing exceptionally well with the 24k Gerry, you're a one man Whites marketing machine. They should put you on the payroll.
That is a nice find though!
I contacted the Whites dealer in NZ today who no longer stocks Whites asking if they were considering getting any 24k's into the country, they said unfortunately they've stopped stocking Whites and are just selling off the inventory now. Shipping from the USA was prohibitive so they're just doing Makro and Nokta now so there will be no 24k in my future.
Is this the guy you contacted?

Hey guys, we are hoping to have a white paper write up on XGB soon. We don't want to give too much away, but basically it allows the machine to track more than one ground balance point at a time.

I don't see a waterproof TDI on our website. Can you post the link?

Aw shucks! It looks like we had a glitch on our website.
A waterproof TDI is a great idea! But unfortunately we're not at liberty to discuss current projects, etc, etc...
I've heard that one of the other manufacturers was working on a waterproof pulse induction machine, maybe you guys have White's Electronics confused with them?

TDI Beach Hunter Has Landed..... Question Time !
in White's Metal Detectors
Posted
Hey Tony. The TDI's pulse delay and ground balance controls work together. On certain targets in certain ground you might find that a perfect ground balance setting diminishes the target response. This is due to the fact that at that particular setting, the ground balance point effects the machine's sensitivity to that particular target. Some people call this a "P.I. hole" or "ground balance hole."
It's good to do ground testing to find out what effect it has on targets with different ground settings. One thing you can do when a target falls into the "ground balance hole" is adjust the ground balance slightly higher or lower to increase the sensitivity of the machine, or adjust the pulse delay to hit harder on that particular target.
