the 7000 found but were not detectable with a 4000 or 4500. These were NOT small nuggets. I was surprized but you probably have come accross this.
I see this almost every day. The area I am working has seen every generation of detector and I still pull out nice pieces consistently with the 7000.

Thanks for posting that, I love to see good stuff still coming out of the ground year after year when a lot of people say there is nothing left. Good job!

Ok, I have seen a lot of people mistake volcanic ash for several other possibilities such as sediment from an ancient hydrothermal vent, known to produce large sporadic nuggets.

Ok, I see you asked a specific question and you're getting a lot of good answers. But I'm going to step outside that question with my answer. Besides a moderate to high frequency VLF and a lightweight PI, I'm taking a gold pan. The chances it tells me something I don't know, even if the chance of that is small, is clearly worth the weight and cost.
Even in our hi tech world it still comes back to a gold pan doesn't it. I still use one a lot.

Steve's stirred me up so here's a pic of a tiny piece, but no-where near the smallest, as its hard to take pics of tiny gold in 38 degree C heat in bright sunlight.
That's my excuse anyway, although our levels of mineralisation are a pretty good excuse too!!
Me getting all fired up about tiny gold is pretty funny though.

JP, I can tell you had to lick your finger to get that out of the scoop.!!! ?

The spring equinox is on March 20. Hope that has nothing to do with it.

Sorry everyone, I have been super busy. I have been detecting Rich Hill area. I was running in extra deep with the Zed. It was a solid inverted signal. I was surprised it didn't have the warble. Probably about 20 inches deep.
