  1. Good morning, just looking for some feedback on the CoilTek 18X12 Goldstalker Mono Elliptical coil. Anyone had any experience with it? If so, what are your opinions on its abilities please. On a different note, how about the Minelab Commander 15X12 semi-ellipitical mono? I realize there are newer, probably much better coils for the GPX, but I'd really like some information on either of these coils by anyone that's used them. Any feedback on either coil is much appreciated, including which one you think might be better than the other . . . (I've never used either one, but have a chance to buy, but can't find any reviews so far except by the manufacturers.) Thanks for your time, and all the best, Lanny
  2. Hi guys so the “new to me” atx arrived - mint condition which is great. I have several older ATX coils with various cable faults and wanted to rewire one onto a straight cable. (Do I need a 4 wire and screen cable?) I wonder if anyone has a wiring diagram at all, or failing that - the original cable has 4 wires and a unshielded screen on the DD coil. Is the screen Actually connected to any of the 4 wires? I can’t seem to get the “iron check” feature to work on my salvaged coil and guess this may be due to the screen cable? i know the windings are circa 9ohms and 1.3 ohms any help appreciated on the DD and Mono wiring. fyi / had a swing with the atx today - it’s still a great machine!
  3. Fisher contacted me for a purchase of an AQ and was offering the 8" coil. I passed on the AQ since I already have two. Anyone purchased the 8" and what is your opinion?
  4. Is it just my imagination or is the Tarsacci MDT 8000 a different machine with the 12 inch coil on it?? Just seems to be more stable to me, I ran the machine yesterday with the stock coil, same settings basically in a farm field, just didn’t seem to be the same as a few days ago with the 12 inch.
  5. Hello all. I’m new to this forum and am seeking advice on my detector. I recently acquired my dads gpx5000. It’s a big step up from my ML xterra 705. He gave me 2 commander coils. An 11” mono and an 11” DD as well as a coiltek 12x18 goldstalker mono. Previous to this, I was interested in the GM1000 because of its ability with smaller gold. My question is can I make this gpx as good or better for small gold as the GM1000 by using a smaller coil. As you can tell I’m relatively new to this. Lol Thank you Steve
  6. Since I put the 15 inch coil on my 800, I’ve noticed the balance is now NOSE HEAVY....is there a fix to balance it out...ie not be so NOSE HEAVY....??
  7. I wish I had found this forum earlier. Just signed up today. This is best detector forum I have ever seen. I have an old GTAX 1000. Bought it new back in 2000. The factory coil (Crossfire Supreme Deepseeker) was destroyed in a car accident. The control head and top tube section were not touched. I home brewed a bottom tube and it works fine. I called Kellyco asking for a replacement coil. The sales person said they only had one coil that would work with a GTAX 1000. A week later I received from Kellyco a Garrett Pro Performance Elliptical search coil. I called Garrett to make sure the coil would work and was advised that it would. I purchased the new coil almost a year ago. I'm just now getting around to installing it. Here's the problem: The end connector on the new search coil cable will not fit the GTAX 1000 coil cable receptacle. Both cable connectors of the new and old search coils are five pin but of a different configuration. I can solder the old connector to the new detector coil cable. I'm just not sure of which pins of the old connector the new coil wires go to. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a new detector but I want to keep the old one because it has served my purpose for many years. Both Kellyco and Garrett detectors said the new coil will work with the GTAX 1000. I have attached photos of the two cable connectors. This is really a great forum. Earlier this afternoon I looked the forum over for over an hour. My old GTAX 1000 has found many civil war artifacts. I want to keep it alive. Thanks, Bruce in Kingston, OK
  8. I’ve been dithering on the 15 inch coil for my Noxy 600.... I mostly do beaches here in So Calif..... I’ve been doing ok with the 11 inch that came with, but am not sure if the 15 in her would be an advantage..... what are your thoughts? ? ?
  9. Hi all ! and cheers for the add ! I have had the Nox for nearly 3 years now and have finally bitten the bullet and grabbed a Monster 😁 also this morning Eyyyyhaaa ! Now for the stupid first question (I've had a read and could not find anything in a post on it 😔) Has anyone here tried a Nox 15 inch coil on the Gold Monster. The Nox can run at 40mHz and the Monster runs 45mHz so pretty close there and I have read (not confirmed) elsewhere that the coils have proprietry chips in them to stop interchangeability. They both fit each others coils though even though some said the plugs would not but I have not been game to turn on the monster with the Nox's 15 inch coil plugged in. (Big chicken 🤣) The thought of the Monster with a 15 inch coil is so tempting So back to the big ask. Has anyone actually tried ? (Ps love my 2 nox 800s)
  10. Saw this while looking for something else. Seems like a good price? Thought I would share here. Maybe it is not a favored coil as I’ve read it is heavy and not much deeper than 11” on the F75. The F75 coil full price is $150 however.... so maybe not.
  11. I am looking for some guidance on what coil size to use when I go into an area for the first time. I am using a White's Goldmaster 24k and have a complete set of coil sizes. I would be working in either Nevada or Arizona. When I enter an area for the first time I do not know if it has been worked previously or is virgin ground. Does this information affect my coil size choice? Should I plan to make just one pass over an area or two passes using a large coil first and then a smaller coil? I don't want to miss a larger deep target and I would also like to find the smaller near surface targets. I am assuming that if I see signs of dry washer activity that a smaller coil would be a good first pass choice, am I correct? Thanks in advance for your advice.
  12. What is the best aftermarket coil for the Bounty Hunter Time Ranger Pro, Teknetics G2+, Fisher F-19 and Fisher Goldbug Pro (they are all more or less the same detector)? NEL, CORS, MARS or Detech are the choices.
  13. This is a Garrett forum for people who like Garrett detectors, so they can learn about how to get the best out of them. If you want to compare brands, or just state your negative opinion of Garrett or it's products, please use the appropriate forums, like the Advice & Comparisons Forum. Thanks.
  14. Does anyone know whether Miner John has been successful in rebuilding his manufacturing facility after it burned in the fire? I am entertaining the idea of buying one of his coils if and when they once again become available, and am just curious. I certainly wish him the best.
  15. Finally got a Superfly for my Multi Kruzer. It weighs just .01 lbs more than the stock 7x11. Overall it is less chattery and I can kick the gain up much more. Depth wise on a silver dime it at same gain settings it will go between 2"-3" deeper with steadier numbers. Target separation seems to be about the same and in the field I gave it a go for about an hour or so and it was really nice to swing. Though I only found a bit of clad I plan on giving this one some serious hours. Not sure if it is a worthy upgrade for anyone with an Amphibio but if you have one of the Kruzers I highly recommend it.
  16. Wow I can't believe I got out yesterday to dig. It seems like work and the stress of things in 2020 took a toll on my detecting experiences for quite a while. I wanted a new coil for the MK and saw a post Kac made about the Nel Superfly, So I said what the heck I'll give it a try. This coil is 6 grams lighter than my 9 inch. I must say this coil is amazing!!! great depth and way better separation. So I went to give it a spin on a site I hunt that has some modern and 18th century history to it. (ball fields and farm fields). I swung for about 5 hours in the 35 degree weather, and found a bunch of coins,(1941 penny, 46 nickle) shot shells, suspender clip, fishing reel, and a fragmented old bell. I wish the bell was whole, because it was about 2'' in dia. The reel perplexes me because of the lack of water in the middle of a 20 acre field. Overall I had a really nice trip out, I was starting to forget how detecting can clear your mind. PS Joe D can you please send some of the Florida warmth up here to PA.
  17. I've always wrapped the coil wire around the shaft a few inches up from the coil. But then I saw in a some people mentioning they run the wire straight up the lower shaft then start coiling the wire above that. Someone mentioned the reason he does this is because of the magnetic field and possible interference wrapping it shortly above the coil. I have only been detecting about 7 years and always trying to learn more. Any advise/suggestions ect. on this would be great and thanks in advance.
  18. Hi i have one question . Its possible change coil conector ? ( fits AKA coil to Garrett? )
  19. Hi Folks, I'm developing a new VLF analog prototype detector and am using a concentric coil I've seen in the book "Inside the Metal Detector", it has the TX coil in the center with upper and lower RX coils that are balanced. So I have some questions for you experienced folks: Does anyone know if this style of coil is still used? If not, does anyone know why it fell out of favor? Any pro's and con's? Thanks for your help, I'm considering showing some of the pic's as I progress, I have the next revision pcb on order, we'll see how it goes.
  20. The coil cable has developed what I think is a discontinuity on one or more wires at or in the molded plug. Plug says: "Amphenol". There are 8 conductors. Does anyone here know the part number for a replacement plug to fit the jack on the rear of the MX Sport control box? 50 years ago I soldered a shortwave radio kit together; I'm quite rusty, but perhaps I could solder a new plug on (doesn't NEED to be waterproof). TIA!
  21. I did some testing in my back yard to compare relative depths achievable in my soils with various coils on the Fisher F75. Caution: these are relative measurements specific to my soil conditions (including ferromagnetic mineral content and current moisture content). The purpose is merely to compare coil sensitivity for particular settings which push the detection depth limit under these conditions but otherwise should not be used as an absolute indication of how this detector with these coils mounted will perform under different conditions by other detectorists. My ground is of moderate mineralization, measuring 2-3 bars on the F75 depending upon exact location in my backyard and coil choice (higher reading for largest coils). Detector setup: Fisher F75 Limited (black) operating in motion 'all metal' (USA nomenclature, not Minelab's!), DST on, gain=99 (max), ground balanced, noise cancelled, threshold=0. I plugged Garrett GS2 headphones directly into the socket, i.e. 'wired' headphones. Test targets: 5" deep 95% copper Memorial USA 1 cent, 6" deep 25% nickel, 75% copper USA 5 cent ('nickel'). (These have been in the ground ~ 2 years.) Measurement meaning: because the coins are at fixed depth, in each measurement I raise the coil until I lose the signal in either left or right swing directions. That is, I require the target to sound off clearly as the coil moves from left to right and from right to left. I use wood blocks as shims with a least significant thickness increment of 1/2" (~1.3 cm). I estimate half that or 1/4" as the measurement's systematic uncertainty. Note that these measurements are intermediate ('hybrid') between full ground and an (full) air test. Coils tested: Fisher stock 7"x11" DD and 5" round DD (both included in the Limited/black model package), Coiltek 6" round DD prototype (built for Fisher F5 and operated successfully on my Fisher Gold Bug Pro), Mars 6"x10" DD Sniper, and Detech 13" round DD Ultimate. (I forgot to test the only concentric I have for this detector -- Fisher 5.5"x10" which is the stock coil on their F70. I'll do that later this week and add it to the table below.) Results: Summary/Conclusions: With the exception of the yellow-highlighted Coiltek prototype (which was not designed for the F75), the order of depth does reflect coil size. The Mars 6"x10" DD performs almost as well as the stock Fisher 7"x11" DD. The largest coil, the Detech Ultimate, is only a bit better than those two which likely reflects the considerable increase in ground it 'sees'.
  22. Just got bitten by the broken coil ear bug. Have had the Nox for 2 years and thought I was special because mine hadn't broken yet. It is on it's way to PA. Wanted to get one of the stiffener devices to put on the new coil for insurance. I've read a couple of horror stories of both ears breaking off after using one. I was leary of just buying from eaby or amazon. If you use one who did you buy it from and how has it worked?
  23. What is wrong with the Gold Kruzer? Why doesn't NEL or CORS or Magic or Detech make any coils for the Gold Kruzer? They make full lineups of coils of for the Gold Racer, but not a one for the Gold Kruzer. You can't say its because of the water proof connector, as they make coils for the Kruzer and Anfibio. You can't say its because of the frequency as they make coils for the Gold Racer and the Gold Kruzer is basically a waterproof Gold Racer. So what gives? Why do the aftermarket coil mfg's treat the Gold Kruzer like an ugly step-child? Mike
