  1. Hunted mostly in tone mode. Set up reject with a small paper clip. Delay 7.5, Reject 6, ATS 7, Sensitivity 7, Threshold 4, Volume max. I did not play much with ATS. I am in brackish water in a pretty well protected environment so the water was flat. Did have a boat go by and the AQ was not affected by the 6 inch or so wake that washed over with the detector fully submerged and coil on the bottom. The threshold did have a little bit of warble from the boat. Changing freq did not seem to help. When the guy shut the engine down at his dock, the little bit of warble went away. I'm thinking his ignition system is transmitting the noise. I was surprised how quiet the AQ is in the water. I could run any delay. If sensitivity was higher than 7 there was some sounding on coil movement that was reduced when sweep was slowed to a crawl, but at 7 it was pretty quiet. As for the sounding when the connector dips in and out of the water; it does, but not any where near as bad as I had imagined from watching and listening to a couple of the posted videos. Would I pay more for a stainless connector with a reduction in the effect? Sure, but after actually experiencing it, I am kind of ambivalent about it. It retunes quicker than I would need if I were in waves that were at the connector level, so if I have a little cut close to shore on an ocean trip, I could deal with a wave hit at the connector and hunt between waves. How much the higher salinity at the ocean would change how it acts? Not sure. Coil does have a little float to it. Not bad, but would be nice to have it not float. I gave up with back pain at almost exactly 3 hours of running the AQ; battery was still going. The edge of the coil does help with pinpointing. I hit a few old pull tabs that were deep and took several scoops to dig out. Also got some small sinkers that were several scoopers. Moving the scoop close to see a tone break is kind of tricky. There is a very narrow window between getting a target tone break and the scoop being a greatly overwhelming influence. It is going to take some practice and some more ear learning. Overall, I'm very happy with the AQ so far. Most of the targets are right in the range I'm looking for. Even got one small ring, although it is a junk eaten up copper one.
  2. I have to qualify that title, 90% of the bottle caps were found in the dry sand along with one plated ring. This is not a dry sand coin shooting machine...but I knew that going into it. Lots to learn yet on the machine, wanted to do some testing against the MDT today but unfortunately, the battery died prior to us testing. Most of the water hunting was done in All Metal, 10,5us due to choppy water, sensitivity was just under 4. Gold ring #2 for the AQ 10k, 2.15 grams with CZ's. No doubt in my mind that any other water machine would have got this one IF you got your coil over it. One scoop target. Major cramping on the scoop arm from all the digging. This machine will get me back into shape or kill me! Cliff
  3. A buddy of mine received his Fisher AQ Impulse last week. We have been anxiously waiting to try the machine at our freshwater beaches where old bath houses once stood and black sand is abundant. Mike hit the water this morning and did really well at a beach that three of us have pounded over and over with Excaliburs in all metal mode and with White's TDI Beach Hunters. This thing really woke up that beach. Congrats to Fisher for hitting it out of the park with AQ Impulse! I can't wait to get mine and join Mike in the fun. The majority of the stuff Mike found were heard from the top, including the gold.
  4. Water levels were pretty good today. I hit an older area that gave me a ring a few years back. Set knobs to presets except volume (full); threshold was at 4 and hunted all metal. A thanks again to Clive, the edges are easier to hear than previous hunt, but I don't think I'm anywhere near as tuned in yet as I got with the HHPulse. Got some old pull tabs, brass screws, other junk. I focused on faint targets; and this thing is deep. On one of the pennies, I started digging at belly deep and when I got it out, water was breaching the top of the chest waders when I stood on the scoop to sink it. The only things that a magnet sticks to are the one encrusted bottle cap and the big blob in the lower left corner that I think is an old furniture caster wheel. Right now for me, a three hour battery run is just fine. As cdv noted, this detector will get me in shape or kill me.
  5. The site http://fisher-impulse.com is going to become annoying every time I visit it in hope of some update or information or something about AQ and you see the ''COMING SOON'' sign. Please put at least a picture of the AQ in there!!!
  6. With this weeks output, 8 units the last two weeks. Hope the trend continues and increases.
  7. Approximately 3 hour hunt (one battery), about 2 hours in the water in the Gulf. Water was almost flat with a slight current, bottom was rippled. This particular beach doesn't get many tourists and is somewhat out of the way, I didn't expect a lot of targets. Since I still have loads to learn on the machine, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with any specific setting as I was trying to see what adjustments did what. Hunted in all metal the entire hunt. I found you really need to hunt slow to avoid any rising threshold due to swinging into deeper water. Sensitivity adjustments and delay adjustments helped. The machine was more than useable in the water with the exception of the coil connector when it enters/exits the water. Odd thing on that was I thought I was shallow enough but the connector sticks out a good ways..... The tent stakes, sinker, and bottle caps were from the wet sand. The few other targets were from the water waist to chest deep. The dime seemed to be the deepest target at about 3 scoops deep give or take. There was no mistaking the ring as a target, it wasn't a whisper at all.....got it with the second scoop. Pinpointing the target prior to digging was easier with the 12" coil then I had thought it would be. Balance on this machine is really good for wet/dry hunting, however, it did take a few adjustments to my typical hunting style to have good coil control in the water, it does show you how "bad" your normal coil control may be.... You sure don't have to worry about when the battery is getting low, it lets you know when it is time to change batteries or go home! All in all, I'm liking this machine so far.... Cliff
  8. Got a chance to try the AQ on the wet slopes at one of my beaches. I spent most of the day waiting for a low tide so I could see how the AQ performed for me. This beach is generally protected, so the beach does not get ripped up very often from storms. The first part of the day was using my GPX for the dry sand. Late afternoon I spent 2 ¾ hours on the wet slope with the AQ. I ran mute exclusively with 7.5us. It ran very stable with almost no end of sweep falsing. Really nice and smooth. I am still learning, so I dug everything I heard (and even a couple of nulls) which ended up being a quarter and a toy car. The hair pins and long thin wires all gave a double beep, I will be passing on digging them from now on. I will probably live with digging the bottle caps as there are not as many on the wet slopes as there are on the dry sand. I did find 2 rings and was hoping for gold but stainless 316 and aluminum is all I could muster up. They did come in very strong and were in the 10-12” range. All in all, I am happy with the performance of the AQ and I am sure when I get some hours under my belt, I will be more confident in what to dig. I rarely give up on digging a target once I start, but I had to leave a nice deep small target. The water was filling up the hole and the sides caved in so many times that I gave up on it. This area of the beach has a layer of fine sand followed by a layer or small pebble and shell. The next layer has larger rocks locked together tightly. A small target was located somewhere in that last layer. Using the edge of the coil vertically as a pin pointer on the AQ works excellent. What does not work at all is Garrett's pin pointer in water. Even balancing it to the water does not help. I think if I had a better pin pointer, I would have located that target. Also, I am really liking the ease of using the AQ. It does not take you long to get used to how it works or how it sounds. I think it will work well for my type of beach hunting.
  9. This could happen to you!! Long slow romantic walk on the beach this morning. Almost 3 hours in it's time to change the battery. I take the battery off the detector to make the swap and look at it and holy cow the thing is bulbous! I suspect this is what happens when you don't practice safe charging. I was just thinking about the recent threads on the beautiful batteries OBN is making and thinking I don't need to get one, I've got two perfectly good batteries. I'm going to rethink that. HELP OBN! Tim
  10. Just a short note on Joe’s “shorty” AQ battery. It fits well under the cuff and balance was not noticeably effected from the lighter than stock battery. Run time for me in “tone mode” was 6 hours 20 minutes. It is my understanding that in all metal it is approximately one hour less. The M12 (CTX) phones connector was a welcomed change and the power cable with a small loop and ninety degree connector also worked well. Get one of his battery set ups and avoid changing batteries in mid hunt, while they are available. I believe he has other set ups with even longer run times. Knocked it out of the park again Joe, thanks.
  11. Got in 4 hours Tuesday AM, started out with rough water but by 11 am things were calming down. Took me about 30 minutes of messing with the controls before I got it to run stable and under control, then I slowly adjusted the setting as the water calmed. Started out with the settings ....delay 11.5 (15) Sensitivity 6, ATS 8, All metal , volume I ran high the whole time with the threshold just audible.. ( The settings that really seem to calm the AQ in rough water is the delay and ATS ) And by end of day I cut the delay down to 11, sensitivity 4, ATS 6, all metal, volume 9, and threshold 4/5 just audible. It was purring like a kitten. Dug a lot of nickels, no silver coins, one nickel / silver ring (my first marked that) and one 1.5 gram 10k.. This spot I have passed thru with the excalibur a few times of late, I've yet to find targets the way the AQ does. Shallow targets here are trash so I keep on walking on those..I only dig faints here...and the ring was maybe 12/14 inch's? The AQ loves the small gold rings. First time out this year with the drysuit, It was 60 degrees with winds early am. I hate being cold...Plus on one of the other forums some one posted about some flesh eat bacteria and I had cuts on me from working in the yard Monday so best to be safe. All worked out good and glad I went that route. Video of..........cam has been on the blink of late, I think the problem is moisture inside of the Go Pro. As you can tell by the frosty video. I checked to see if i got the gold ring on video, it did, then I stopped the recording..... then it would not restart. Once home I checked and it started to work again. I just dropped it in a bag of rice to see if that will draw some of the moisture out.
  12. This is my "field expedient" really low budget Connector Protector. My original plan was to simple add a piece of 3/4" pvc to the end of the shaft to protect that frail looking little connector in case a fall. That done I thought if I add a 90* elbow and a "tee" them it sorta kinda protects the battery also. If you decide to try this, the only little trick is the 3/4" pvc doesn't quite fit over the end of the detector shaft. You need to make sure the black end cap that has the connector is flush (may require a tiny bit of sanding). you need to heat your piece of 3/4" pvc with a heat gun and when it is soft slip it over the end and let it cool. It will be a very tight slip fit. You are good to go. Up next my pregnant battery. Tim
  13. Finally I was able to get to a beach after their season ended. I used the AQ in all metal and mute modes. I could not use the tone mode since I was way too close to the Acela high speed train. Most of the trains that run that rail don't affect my pulse machines too much, but when the Acela hits the rails, it's a no go for any machine. The AQ handled it a bit better than my GPX does. But you still have to hear the interference and at times you just can't hunt. I hunted for 5 1/2 hours with the AQ (2 3/4 hrs per each battery). The low tide was exceptionally "high" at +0.9. This did not allow me to get much wet sand, so most of the hunt is in dry sand and any wet sand I could find. This is just the first part of the hunt involving the AQ. I hunted another 3 1/2 hours with the GPX not shown here. I have a lot to learn, so I am digging every target. I am getting better at knowing hair pins, as I could call most of them before I dug them. Bottle caps are a different story, as the only idea they might be bottle caps was the extremely strong and wider signal. But I think a gold ring a 2" would sound the same? I should be able to get out again soon and hit a very good low tide, so I will have better information on how I do in the iron and wet sand. I did manage to get a small silver ring, some bling jewelry and a lot of exercise! Settings were Carolina's settings. Thanks man! I ran at 7.5us most of the time. I still like how the AQ responds and feels generally. Only real drawback is swapping out a battery making sure no sand gets into the connections. For those that have way more experience on the AQ than I do, have you found the depth on dry sand to be equal or less than wet sand?
  14. I have been following the pulse induction developments at Fisher Labs since January 2015. Things heated up in January 2018 with the Manta prototype that later became the Impulse AQ. I followed and posted every tidbit I could find about this detector from 2018 on. Why my interest? Simple. I have a history of some pretty serious PI beach detecting. I've used every ground balancing beach detector made... though that's not saying much since there have only been a few. It has been my perception that this is still one of the most under-served, undeveloped portions of the metal detector industry and technology remaining to be exploited. Manufacturers have produced few waterproof detectors compared to other models, and really only the VLF multifrequency models have kept close to performing like dry land detectors. Ground balancing PI beach detectors have fallen far behind the technology available to gold prospectors for dry land use. The new Fisher model gained my interest not only due to the new potential performance benchmarks promised, but the ergonomic design, which looks to be far better than any other similar options. Fisher Impulse AQ Limited Anyone with any sense should know I've been trying to be first in line to get one of these. However, I have not attempted to get in extra early by being a beta tester. Frankly it is a lot of work and not worth it to me these days, even for a free detector. So my goal has been to get my hands on the first one I could purchase. People who have been following the Impulse saga knows it has been a long, strange trail. The long story short is we are all aware of pictures and specs of a version of the machine that Fisher currently has in hand. The most recent photo is above. However, they have decided it needs more work. In particular, longer life batteries, and a redesigned battery system overall that eliminates some weaknesses that currently affect the waterproof rating and possibly the durability of the detector if mishandled. Rather than put this off for more months and probably next year... honestly who knows, given how things have drug out... Fisher has decided to take the hardware they have on hand and produce a short run version of the Fisher Impulse AQ - the Fisher Impulse AQ Limited. The word is there will be no more than 100 of these made. In the meantime work will continue on a future release that addresses the items I mentioned above. The limited production run is intended to target experienced beach hunters who A. know and acknowledge the limitations that exist in the current model and basically promise not to be complaining about what they have been told up front they were getting in that respect and B. people who will be able to offer good, solid, genuine, reliable reports about the detector and what it is capable of. Not sugar coaters, but people who can offer constructive feedback that can be incorporated into the ongoing development of the detector. So kind of like paying beta testers, but not exactly. I'll leave it to the copy of the Fisher disclosure statement I am posting for you to review and which explains the details to decide what it all means for yourself. So why would you want a model that has a limited depth rating and short life battery? Killer price my friends, killer price. I have no idea what the final version of the detector will cost, but this one will be available for $1499. To me even more important is the ability to hit the beach before anyone else with a machine that few will be able to get for some time. I am a "who knows what the future will bring, life is short" kind of guy. I'm going to grab one of these now while the grabbing is good. What's my part in this? Well, not much. I have agreed to the terms and sent a check and have a detector coming soonish, whatever that means. I plan on some fresh water lake detecting and even a little nugget detecting, and will post my thoughts when I have any serious thoughts to post. I did not sign up to promote or do anything at all really except go metal detecting. I'm paying the same price anybody will pay and the terms to me are the same as you read below. Frankly I feel weird posting this, but I asked three separate times and confirmed I can post a copy of this and that the price of $1499 is correct. I must emphasize that I am not a representative for Fisher and am not making a dime off any of this. I'm only passing on what I've been told so far and can only vouch that it is what I have been told. Since I’ve never held the detector I have no more idea than anyone how it will perform other than to say it is a pulse induction detector, and don’t expect it to act like a VLF, especially as regards discrimination. You have issues... don't come looking for me! I'm just a guy who has got my hands on this info and I have been cleared to show it to you. If in doubt, sit it out. That's it. I will post more information when I know it, and photos of my detector when I get it. 15. Last four spins with AQ. Mostly tone mode since I am looking for recent drops. All knee to ankle deep. Volume 8, sensitivity 5, ATS 8.5, reject 4. delay 9. A few targets in all metal were same settings except ATS was 6. Cant stop the bobbie pins. No double ping. Chains are junk. Some junk rings but most gold. Class ring has no name. Good luck everybody. On a side note, I can’t thank Rick and Eva enough for all their help. Top of the line crew they are! I should add, all the coins come in as a iron grunt. I like the anticipation of a 18k 15 gram coming up in my scoop!!! There is very little iron where I am hunting and size and shape tell a lot.
  16. According to the Fisher Impulse AQ facebook site, there is 99% done with the machine. After some reports from AQ limited owners, you see peoblem with battery, cable connectors, noisy coil in the salt water, high temp on the control box, short shaft,,,,,,,,,,and I assume these all problems sums up the remaining of 1% left??how can it be? Has anyone any guess when the final unit is available to buy worldwide?
  17. I was wondering if there any more AQ being made i put my name on a list and was wondering where they are in production last I herd they where at 8 i think i hope they produce the machine for the people on there list and take care of them
  18. https://www.facebook.com/groups/Fisher.IMPULSE.AQ.Metal.detector Extracted and translated from there: What to plan for before buying the future Impulse AQ from Fisher: an appointment with his banker.(In the process a small gift for Madam, to pass the pill) a subscription to the gym, because if you are not used to digging holes of 40 cm or more, it will be useful. (Not to mention the filling, just as physical sometimes) to be done in good conditions, a suitable digging tool, sifting shovel, sand scoop, call it what you want, it must be part of the adventure. (Stain Steel preferred) be well shod, the afternoons will be long, hard to stop when it bites. an XXL garbage bag, because there will be some (PI obliges), and it would not be correct to leave them there, but you already know that, don't you. perhaps the most important, patience, hours of observation in search of a good spot, to come and go on the sand, but not only, between the rocks, under the pebbles. .. Yes, it won't be looking for you, it will find it, but only if you are in the right place. a good front light, a car charger, something to warm up, and room in the trunk for you and your detection buddies. And yes, all of this is to add to your wildest golden dreams, good night everyone. Didier.
  19. You hear all the ime from different sources that Minelab is releasing a PI beach machine next year.If that is true then it is best for Fisher to release the AQ as soon as possible before Minelab. With the popularity and high quality machines Minelab introduces,it's become then another step back for Fisher selling AQ.What do you think guys?
  20. Before I stuck gold. Today was the day I was finally able to get out after getting the AQ back from FT. This was my fourth time getting out and a total of 12hrs before I could get the monkey off my back. It was an early morning low tide hunt but well worth it. I hunted all metal for a while and then tones. I was going from the wet till about knee deep. The AQ was noisy (during each swing) in both settings, running 7-8uS. Even adjusting ATS, swing speed and keeping the coil leveled didn’t help much. I ran sensitivity from 4-6 trying to keep it quiet. I hope to get out again tomorrow to a different beach and see how it performs. I got two silver rings, one junk and an unmarked small gold ring with real diamond chips. Good luck out there and happy hunting.
  21. I pitched a royal fit to get a spare battery with my AQ Ltd, and it helped get an official retail price formulated, which I gladly paid. Fisher Impulse AQ Limited spare NiMH battery, part# PI-BATPK-NIMH $199.00 Fisher Impulse AQ NiMH battery Fisher Impulse AQ NiMH battery
  22. Posting for a "AQ" owner who would like to remain anonymous for now. Hunts on the East coast of the USA. Saltwater.......First time out with his new machine. Got a 14k today. Ran smooth except in front of one area that has a lot of emi. Keep the coil under water there not bad at all. I could run 7 u's no problem but preferred 9. Battery lasted 3 hrs 5 mins. All metal and Tones mods used.7 nickels 8 pennies 2 ear rings 1 Bobbie pin 1 swivel 1 paper clip 1/2 spoon some brass 1 14k 1 tiny tiny brass piece of fish hook 7 u's two full scoops deep so I say 10 to 12 inches. 3 caps fooled me. I can't answer questions on this hunt but just goes to show his experience with the beach's he hunts and with a Pi shows.
  23. Does not like heavy surf must be calm or your in for a long ride Images Happy Trails jimpugh
  24. Dug every signal no matter if I thought it was good or bad. Tone mode. Quarter's grunt, dimes a mid tone, pennies mid tone, nickels high tone, hair pins high tone and some double tone. Sparkler high tone, clippers high wide tone, piece steel? high tone, double tone, brass screw high tone, medallion high tone. Two targets to deep in the wash to retrieve. His words, It's going to be awhile before I set this one down. "I think" we have another AQ Lover...😍
