  1. Hi guys, I have a question, can a coil break the detector computer? because a friend has a garrett at gold and he placed the Nel Storm coil for AT GOLD, after using it for a few hours I turned off the detector for lunch, and when turning it on it did not work anymore, the garrett guarantee said it was a factory problem and it replaced. Now, I want to try that coil with different large nuggets 5g, 10g and 15g but I'm afraid to break my detector, is there any way to check the resistance of the coil and values are optimal for AT gold? Could the coil break the detector? I clarify that it is a coil for AT gold
  2. I swapped out my Nel Big coil on my AT Pro and put the stock coil on and just for kicks I did a quick air test to see if there was any difference and I found that the targets now hit 15-20% further away ie dime at 10 inch instead of 8. For those that don't have Garrett machines and a 3rd party coil, the procedure when changing coil Garrett says to do a factory reset of the machine. So if anyone knows, does using a large coil setting on a stock coil essentially do a tx boost? Do other machines require factory reset after changing coils?

  4. I have the AT Pro for a while now and it is very reliable. I got it just before the AT Max was released. Buddy just got the Max recently as he was using my Pro and the controls were familiar for him. If you don't already have a pinpointer and looking for a complete package then the Max is a great choice. Depth wise it goes about 50% deeper than my AT Pro with the same size coil. That is the equivalent of my AT Pro with a Nel Big coil weighing 3 lbs and measuring 17x15". The true All Metal mode is great in open areas with little or moderate trash, Iron Discrimination on Max is better. AT Pro with stock coil hits quarters 12" or less on average on the ground around here that has high mineralization though I had picked up a Spanish Reale at 14" but it was really faint. Typically in poor conditions the Pro hits in the 10" and under range" which is average for any machine with an 8 1/2 x 11 coil Comparing the 2 machines I think the AT Pro audio tones are a little easier to follow and notch discrimination is just a simple 2 clicks. The Max has a threshold control that is adequate but I find the lowest tone is none and next tone click up is a little loud. That could be just my preference as I also use a Tesoro with much finer controls since it has potentiometers and is an audio only machine. Both the Max and Pro have fairly course id blocks as compared to other machines out there and can limit discrimination but going a block under or over is not a big deal. Learning curve on the MAX is really short, no menus to decipher through and you should be up and running in a few minutes. There are no canned pre-sets as many machines have. The AT Pro has canned Standard (noob) mode that bings on a target and is rarely accurate and Pro modes with tone roll that I ended up using quickly and found it more responsive. The Max is basically a more of a professional model of the older Pro. I had considered upgrading my Pro to the Max, maybe next year as they are solid and reliable machines and the Max does pretty well in the Salt in the single frequency class. If you decide to get one also consider the RnB lithium battery for them. I get over 40 hours running with no performance drop as compared to alkalines that as they wear down the machines performance diminishes. Think the rechargeable battery runs around $80.
  5. Are the Garrett AT series detectors (Pro, Gold and Max) that good? Based on youtube personalities, it looks like it. But after doing research on online message boards, it seems like they're "good, but there are other comparable or better options out there," a la the Equinox. How much of the prevalence of Garrett AT metal detectors on youtube is due to effective marketing and how much is due the AT metal detectors being that good? I'm not intending to start a flame war or anything as I eventually plan on upgrading my machine and I'm considering the AT Max, Equinox 800 or Fisher F75.
  6. I been looking for another coil for my AT Pro. I have the stock and Nel Big and find the Big coil hard to gb in most the areas around me and also too heavy. I was looking at the smaller Nel coils and see that a comparable coil in size to the Ultimate 13 is way heavier. The Ultimate weighs in lighter than the stock coil. Anyone have opinions on it's performance ie depth and separation? I plan on using it in open fields that have a good amount of iron in them. Thanks
  7. I stumbled across a post on another forum about the auto ground balance on the AT Pro and how it is not as close to the ground mineralization as it could be. The poster suggested auto ground balancing then switching to manual ground balance and dropping it by 5 clicks. I tried it with a couple targets on the ground, silver dime, gold earing and small white gold earing and yup gained about 2" on the gold and easy 3" on the dime. Though the targets were on the ground and not buried I believe the gain will be a bit less but the vdi numbers will be more accurate. I also tested 10 clicks down but that may be too close the grounds mineralization and the machine may start falsings. I had done this before at the beach where auto gb doesn't work that well. In wet sand the Auto Gb would set the machine around 12-14 and running the machine at 8 or gave it a bit more punch and actually ran quieter. I just never tried that on land as I assumed when the machine was quiet it was good to go. I'm sure many of you already knew this but thought I would toss it out anyways.
  8. I have had a Garrett ACE 250 for several years and just bought a very slightly used Garrett AT Pro a week ago. A couple of times I did not get any sound when first turned on but after wiggling the coil cable it started giving tones again. On occasion it has suddenly started chattering with almost no movement and I have done a reset and it corrected the problem. My main issue right now is that if I bump the coil cable close to the connector I get a tone every time. I have removed and re-inserted the connector twice making sure it is fully inserted but still get the tones. I have made sure its not the connector itself. I don't have another coil for the AT Pro to swap out. I texted the previous owner to find out when he purchased it hoping it was less than the 24 month warranty that Garrett has. Wondering how strict Garrett is on fixing issues like this or replacing a coil with a bad cable if I was not the original purchaser. Any suggestions are appreciated.
  9. Hello everyone. I haven't really gotten out to use my detector since buying it last year spring time (Garrett AT Gold). I'm not sure exactly how to use it and would love some pointers or would be very happy to get with someone local and teach me some pointers. I am a GPAA member and I am thinking about going to the claim they have out by Rye Patch next Tuesday Dec 04. I have never been out to that area so any info on that would be appreciated as well. Thank you very much and have a great week.
  10. Now through March 31st you can buy the Garrett AT Pro with the smaller 5" x 8" DD coil instead of the normal stock 8.5" x 11" coil. The package is also at a lower price of $488 of course... and you get a free hat! While this is being billed as a holiday special the fact that it runs through March 31, 2019 means there is plenty of time to take advantage of this package deal. https://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/pdfs/garrett_dec_2018.pdf Garrett AT Pro Sport Special
  11. Hey all, As for the Garrett AT Pro, does anyone else not like the fact that the unit doesn't have a "tone only" mode? Find that it's a deal breaker for you? Thoughts?
  12. Was looking at my AT Pro that I run with a big coil and trying to figure out if I could make a counter weight or not and looking under the armrest I discovered Garrett put a wire clip! After all these years I never noticed it. After giving up on the idea of a counter weight I hooked the headphone wire to the clip and discovered the wire had a nasty slice through it and was only held together by the copper shielding! Dug through my box of stuff I use for electronic repair I had a container of liquid electrical tape. Looks like I'm good to go. Close call as I plan to hit the beaches this weekend.
  13. Decided to get me another AT Pro. Last hunt back I was out in a light drizzling misty rain with my metal detector wrapped in a walmart bag and decided I needed a wet weather detector. Did a review and I know its not the new darling around town but I remembered how well the Garrett coil performed for me in the past and decided to get another one. Looking forward to chatting about it later. HH Mike

  19. You have a NOX 800; why would you want an AT Pro, other than to just have one..? Curious, is all.. I have an AT Pro.. Really like it a lot.. It's a main machine of mine for where I live.. However, I bought it less than a year before the Equinox series was announced.. If I could have a do-over the day NOX was released I know which machine I would buy to have only one of the two and it wouldn't be an AT Pro.. Not that there's anything wrong with 'em, it's simply because they pale in comparison.. Sooo, it really is a curiosity to me why you want an ATP other than to just have it..? What function can it perform for you the E8 cannot..? This is not a cut or cut-down of any kind, I'd just really like to know / know your thoughts / reasoning..? Swamp

  23. This is just a short video clip showing the AT Max in highly mineralized red dirt, on a "live dug" Civil War bullet. Settings were Custom (so that the machine saves the settings) but basically, Pro Zero mode with Iron Disc at 10. The search coil used is the CORS Strike 12" x 13" DD coil (same as NEL Tornado).
