  1. I have asked some and received their ideas and suggestions if you are running wireless which transmitter and headphones are you using. What kind of run time are you getting out of the ones you chose ? Sound Quality? I can get the Z-Link or the Minelab sets up but thought someone might have a really good setup they have ran across Thanks Jim
  2. Has anyone tried them with a metal detector? I came across an article which displayed some Bose audio sunglasses. The concept was not something I had really considered but when you read about them they are built for athletes that need to be aware of their surroundings to avoid accidents. We detect in areas where we need to avoid accidents and critters also so hearing outside of headphones is beneficial. This would also have the potential of eliminating hot and or uncomfortable headphones for me in the desert. I don't think they could work well at the beach with crashing waves. Maybe we can begin a review of these Bose and other audio sunglasses here. Of course there would need to be some with LL and other technical specifications to work with our equipment but it could also be a new product idea for one of these companies. https://www.bose.com/en_us/products/frames/bose-frames-tempo.html#D61A74D4CFE947DB6685D4D8CE1982FC
  3. Dear Valued Members,We are adding 2 new headphones to our line-up.1)NOKTA MAKRO KOSS HEADPHONES W/WATERPROOF CONNECTORCompatible with all waterproof Nokta Makro Detectors – Kruzer/Anfibio/SimplexAllows the user to submerge the whole detector in water for shallow underwater hunting.(The headphones are not waterproof).2)NOKTA MAKRO KOSS HEADPHONES W/6.3mm JACK – for land useBOTH HEADPHONES HAVE IN-LINE VOLUME CONTROL, ADJUSTABLE HEADBAND and SPIRAL CABLE.
  4. Over the years we've touched on the difference between High Impedance vs. Low Impedance headphones. Historically, the headphones designed for detecting have been High Impedance, and all were equipped with 1/4 inch headphone plug. Everyone developed a preference for their brand because of the way they fit and sound. These days more detectors are set up for the 1/8 inch headphone plugs and a few detecting headphones have offered that choice. The technology is clearly moving away from all wired headphones in favor of wireless. The market is really directed at music and communication devices, not detecting. I'm just curious how the impedance issue affects the newer technology. The latency of wireless is a completely separate discussion, but may be necessary to understand the importance of Impedance. I have always used in ear monitors rather than over the ear headphones. It's just more practical in the desert environment of sunny Yuma. The majority of "ear buds" for lack of a better term are low impedance designed for listening to music on low powered handheld players. The high impedance ear monitors are available but quite expensive. The GPZ tends to overpower el cheapo ear buds and produces a really unpleasant sound. My question is twofold: what was our understanding of the importance of Impedance in the old days with wired headphones and how/if that has changed with wireless.
  5. We detectorists are accustomed to dealing with nature (wind noise) and human nature (traffic noise) while detecting. In a significant section of the USA, some of us get an added bonus (err, annoyance?) a few times in our lives. I assume most of you aren't aware of this 17 year occurrence of cicadas known as Brood X. Here from Wikipedia are the states most impacted: The brood's next major emergence will take place during 2021 in these 15 states: Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.[5][3][6] I don't remember 1970's emergence and in 1987 I was in California and Saskatchewan the entire time they were performing. But I experienced the 2004 emergence. It's pretty impressive. Cicadas are present at least in the Eastern USA every year. They typically compete with crickets in terms of volume and audio frequency (to my untrained ears, anyway). However, the Brood X is like sitting in the front rows of a rock concert compared to the comfort or your living room listening to music. Unlike crickets, they don't reserve their singing to merely the evening hours, either. Here's an excerpt from NYTimes regarding their audio volume: Sounds up to 90 decibels could be measured standing directly under a tree filled with cicadas. A motorcycle, by comparison, can put out sounds up to 95 decibels, which can damage hearing after about 50 minutes of continuous exposure, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You don't need to be under a tree to experience the impact, either. BTW, the 17 year emergence cycle is an example of nature understanding mathematics. 17 is a prime number (divisible by only 1 and itself if restricting to whole numbers). The reason, though, with two competing hypotheses, is still being investigated.
  6. I was one of the first to get an 800 in the United States. I got on Bill's waiting list several months before the release. Since then I've had to replace the control unit because of a broken switch. Everything has worked well and I've found lots of good targets. Along the way I bought a pair of Avantree headphones and they work fine but I prefer the Minelabs. Today I put them on the USB charger. I've had to fiddle with several different power cords the last few months but eventually I get the red charging lights to come on and that was the same today. When I picked them and the charged 800 up the charging lights were out per normal. When I got to the beach to connect I couldn't get the 'on' tones for the headphones. They were completely dead. I've since fiddled with them and tried multiple cables that had charged them before but I can't get the 3 little red charging lights to come on. I've cleaned the mini leads with alcohol and jiggled everything but no go. Is it dead? haha I'll use the Avantree until I can get another pair of the originals. They don't need to be new.
  7. Hi All I was just wondering if there’s a way to use other Wireless Bluetooth headphones/ Earbuds instead of the one’s that came with the detector?. Just asking as my ears can get quite sweaty with the over ear headphones on during summer months and it’d be great if I could use another option. As I’m sure many others I’m guessing would be in the same vote as myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
  8. I'm repairing a pair of SunRay Pro gold headphones & discovered a bad speaker. Does anyone know of a source of parts or where I can get a derelict or throw-away set of phones for the parts?
  9. I plan on using my nox 600 in the water as well as on land. I also plan on ordering some Tony Eisenhower waterproof headphones. Do those of you who have those headphones use them as general use for both land and water, or just in the water? I ask because I’m not thrilled with the cheepo headphones that came with my Equinox 600 and would like to have one pair of good general use headphones.
  10. Something to watch out for.... Went to charge my headphones recently but couldn't get the status LED lights to show red charging , no matter what I tried just couldn't get a light. Changed cords and chargers but to no avail. About to ring my dealer about a replacement, with thoughts of "Knowing my luck ,I bet you don't have stock etc etc " when.......upon reading the manual pg 56... I realized that I was looking at the lefthand earpiece status LEDs and not the righthand Status LEDs. .. Duh!! . The righthand earpiece LEDS are the only ones "activated". Both earpieces(left and right) have LEDs or provision for and whilst the mini usb plugs into the left hand earpiece you need to check right hand earpiece for status. All good now, I'm a Happy Chappie once again.
  11. Hello to all i decided to upgrade a bit my case for the wireless transmitter on my Tarsacci it was previously store at the back of the control box stuck with some velcro, inside a tiny pouch/zip bag So this is what i did. I took a 18650 case holder, melted with a solder the edge to pass the cable. I found a piece of rubber with some sticky tape on it and sculpted it with a knife.I think a chair sticky slider could but i didnt have any. This to be able to switch on and off in the box Managed to squeeze the excess of wire behind in the box. Tested all working It is dust proof and probably splash proof, not 100% shower proof but working on it Enjoy RR
  12. Hi. Just received the mdt 8000. Would love to hook up the garret z link. Which adapter do you all use if you use the wireless with the tarsacci? And, any suggestions for the settings in red dirt?? Thanks in advance!
  13. I’ve been reading up on Equinox waterproof headphones as I will finally have the opportunity to try it at the beach in the next few months. I plan to wade with it for the most part but the unit might get dunked some as I’m still within warranty and want to make sure I don’t have a leaky one... I’ll have a Seahunter as backup or if I ever want to snorkel with it for extended periods. Probably will only do this a couple times a year in the near future. I’ve read good things about the Pelsos as a waterproof above water with the occasional dunk, $50 bucks less new. I’ve read the Yellow Minelabs are not very loud. Different tech, speakers vs piezo. On the Pelsos I’ve read they come with a long cord that a good thing? Hopefully not too annoyingly long? Thoughts?
  14. Just got a set of these shipped in 3 days from Hungary. Perfect impedance match for the N/M detectors--incredible sound. Very clean and sharp --brings my accuracy up a lot. They are so loud they need to be run at 8. I worked with the manufaturer to improve his strain relief system (see the Heyco)--very nice set of phones for these machines. cjc
  15. I'm going to try out the new Tek weatherproof headphones with the 8500 They are really designed for use with the armrest headphone jack models like the T2 and F75 but I have an extension cord that allows me to use them with the 8500 These are very nice weather proof Koss models made for 1st Texas. I've had them awhile and I've used them with my F75, Impact and Gold Kruzer, V3 and Etrac. Audio wise I find them to be on par with the White's Prostars. I don't have any problem recommending them and they are reasonably priced. 16. I recently posted this to another forum and thought it might help benefit others and maybe generate some interesting discussion here. A booster can only amplify whatever the detector audio delivers no matter what anyone try’s to tell you. The inbuilt booster speaker system in the Minelab GPX 4500, GPX 5000 is too coarse for effective use via the Target Volume control, this same control is also used on the GPZ 7000 in conjunction with the WM12 and is also too coarse! I originally popularised the booster speaker concept when developing a series of instructional videos, looking for a way to obtain good audio that allowed ambient noise of a goldfields environment to also come through so viewers could experience as close as possible the way a detector sounds when in use. In conjunction with this I also discovered the benefits of removing the immediate audio from your ears and placing it further away allowing faint signals to come through (similar to a Television sounding loud in the kitchen compared to being right in front of it). Our ears are designed to collect sound, especially sound that is further away, our ears are also more sensitive to variation in pitch similar to our eyes are to movement so being able to hear the threshold at all times as a reference point is very important, but not at the expense of those around you and small target signals. The aim with a booster speaker is to lift up the overall volume of faint deep targets without drowning everything else out, as such in less trashy sites a higher volume can be used in conjunction with the correct threshold level. You need to set the volume to compliment the threshold, which needs to be smooth and stable, if someone can hear your threshold miles away you’re doing it all wrong and negating any advantage as well as driving other operators around you nuts. Best way to go is to set the detectors settings to be smooth and stable, I tend to use conservative Sensitivity/Gain settings along with Volume and Threshold. The Target Volume needs to be kept low to allow the booster to drive the audio without causing distortion, this is especially important on the GPZ 7000. If your detector Target Volume is set to aggressively the booster is then going to amplify that aggressive distorted audio. The threshold needs to be smooth to the ear to start with, if it stutters the amplifier will exacerbate that, if it is too loud it will drown the audio as you boost it. The B&Z booster is best used for single or twin speakers, it has a very good range of amplification with hardly any distortion. This is especially important because you need to use the booster to adjust the overall audio to suit the ambient noise conditions, in quiet conditions you lower the booster volume so the threshold is not dominating, if its windy then you increase the volume so the threshold can be clearly heard. The B&Z booster runs on 2 x AAA alkaline batteries which should last up to 3 weeks at 6 to 8 hours per day, it is in a plastic housing to cut down on any excess metal on your body. The B&Z can be used with headphones, to do so the volume of the detector needs to be lowered so the booster volume can be lifted above 2 1/2 to 3 to avoid noise and hiss from the potentiometer, with the GPX and GPZ machines this can be as low as 6 or even lower if required depending on the sensitivity of the headphones being used. Higher tones tend to require less volume, lower tones more, lower tones (30 and down on Minelab PIs and ZVT) are generally better heard through headphones rather than speakers, this is due to all the natural low frequency noises heard in natural ambient environments, Noise cancelling headphones really compliment low frequency Tones. The audio of the Minelab GPX and GPZ machines is converted to analogue via the speakers, boosted speakers tend to iron out the steppy digital nature of the Minelab audio, this helps a lot with running less noise floor filtering through the Stabilizer or Audio Smoothing controls, which is were all the edge of detection depth performance lays. The B&Z only ever magnifies the pure audio of the detector with no colouring of the audio through filtering, you only ever hear the “pure” audio intended by the designer of the metal detector. Call me a purist but that’s the way I prefer to hear my detector. Hope this helps JP
  17. If it comes with waterproof headphones, why would I want those? I'll probably want to go wireless. Even if I did decide to go in the water, why can't I use what I have or choose what I want?
  18. Hi all, My husband and I like to go metal detecting together, but with the one detector - 1 finds the spot the other digs. We would like to be able to connect 2 headphones to the Equinox 600. I see I could get a WM08 to pair one set of headphones to the device. And if we wanted two bluetooth devices, I believe we would have to have two modules. But in addition to the paired wireless set can we plug a second set in to the same module, so the person with the detector has a wired connection and the second person has a wireless one , only needing one module? Thanks in advance. Michelle
  19. Last year I bought 2 new pairs of Detector Pro Gray Ghost NDT from my local dealer and early this year 1 more pair . I buy them like that to keep me ahead in case they stop making them with all the new machines coming out with their own phones. When I tried 1 early last Month I found that the tones had changed . In the past I have praised these headphones as being brilliant for all Minelab machines , being able to simulate the exact tones the machines make without headphones. When I discovered this I have now decided to take them back to the shop and in the mean time I bought 2 pairs of Nugget Buster NDT . When they came I checked them and to my horror they have the same dumbed down muffled speakers too. 1 of the sets were faulty anyway so I sent them both back. Maybe Detector Pro doesn't understand the issues with Minelab machines and their tones / sounds . But if you have a detector that has fluty tones and you have no choice but to buy bass toned headphones that sound nothing like the tones on the machines speaker then whats the point having that machine ? Garrett I feel makes good headphones that suit their machines . XP make great headphones (not WS5 ) that suit their machines. I am sure other makers put in headphones that go well with their machines. Minelab are renowned for making great sounding machines then totally letting them and themselves down with bass toned headphones that for many of us have trouble hearing the targets if low Bass toned . I used sound to pick out targets and only look at the numbers if not sure . With the newer Gray Ghosts / Nugget Busters I am stuck and always having to check target numbers . When doing beaches that are trashy to the hilt it is important that we are given the best headphones that simulate the exact tones the machine makes . Anything else is cheap rubbish . We saw that with the Koss phones on the Explorer's and ET and CTX , we have seen it with the cheap but high priced with Minelab Logo headphones on the Nox . When using my last remaining higher toned Gray Ghost NDT phones I get the targets nice and sharp. The newer types are like listening through a damned pillow. If Minelab or Detector Pro etc are worried about Health & Safety and damaging hearing of people then put volume controls on them , which I will add Detector Pro does. All other Detector Pro headphones that I have checked are low toned except maybe ? as I the past the Black Widows . At least I hope they are the same as they used to be . The headphones issue is one of the reasons I have gone to Garrett for my next machine. If Minelab let the side down again I will not buy a Minelab in future . The right Headphones are vital pieces of kit and if you are going to have a machine that has fluty or whistle tones then the Headphones that come with them MUST have the same tones . It can affect a detectorist opinion of a machine and his / her ability to use or understand and hear deep targets . Wake up Minelab on this important issue . STOP giving us rubbish Headphones that don't do the job . Your machines are great most of the time . Your Headphones or copies of others are just plain pants. I am not getting at Detector Pro or at Minelab though it sounds it . Detector Pro doesn't know any better I think . But Minelab damned well should . Rant over , for now !
  20. Minelab has come out with a new more robust aptx ll headphones designed for their new gpx 6000 gold detector. I contacted them to see if these will work with the equinox and they will.
  21. I am trying to put a new connection onto my ls pelso headphones, the original connector was only chrome plated, it rusted and somehow got bent. The connector I want to use is a 90deg gold plated one that I have from another crappy pair of earbuds I got on ebay. I thought they'd have the same wires but after cutting them open they are different. The Lspelsos have a red wire and a white wire. Thr Earbud connector has a red white and yellow wire. After connecting the reds to the whites and plugging it in to the equinox there was no sound Can anyone offer any advice? Much appreciated and hh
  22. Are the green wireless headphones that come with the simplex worth getting or should I use my Bluetooth ? What are you guys using?
  23. The GPX 6000 comes with a new Minelab ML 100 wireless headphone. Like the older ML 80 that comes with Equinox, these can also be plugged into the detector directly if the charge runs out, or if you want no lag at all - go wired! The big difference appears to be a more robust metal yoke design, along with a much larger padded ear muff. It also appears to have the same waterproof 1/8" adapter as is used with Equinox, but this time supplied with the detector. 👍🏼 New Minelab wireless headphones for GPX 6000 (and Equinox?) 24. I picked up a set of MS-3 Z-link headphones and used them a few times with no problem. Today I was hunting and the volume dropped to almost nothing. I thought it was my machine, so I disconnected it, good volume from the machine. I have another Z-link, so I tried using the other transmitter, now the volume is almost completely gone. Tried the other transmitter and same problem. Ok, I thought the transmitters are bad. I connected a set of phones to the receiver and paired up the transmitters and both work fine. The phones were purchased last April 2020, but, not by me. Will Garrett honor the warranty if I'm not the original owner? I haven't had to deal with Garrett's customer service in years and am wondering what I'm in for, thanks.
  25. Hey y'all, The last couple of days I've been out bashing the farm with my new Equinox 600 instead of my ACE 400. First day I went through my yard again, and was surprised I didn't find anything new save for one button where I first started using the ACE. Yesterday and today I searched the farm where I've been scoring a lot of 1700's stuff, but it has sort of dried up as I've gone inland. Found a nice 1917 buffalo nickel, and a 1981 memorial, but mostly beer cans and buckshot. Think I may have found part of a lead token. I also went over to one of the other fields to see if I could locate where a house used to be in the 1800s. Really trashy area! I dug everything and found some brick so I knew that I was in the right place. However, I noticed the detector tends to make local dogs bark, and most around here are untied. A few days ago I thought of what I could do to prevent this problem, but still hear while detecting, particularly now it is hunting season. Might save a life! I remember researching headphones a long time ago, and ran across a certain type of wireless headphone - Bone Conduction. Last week I was able to find a pair that were Aptx Low Latency, perfect for the Equinox, and the only ones out there with this particular protocol that I could find. Others mention BT 5.0 but not Aptx LL. They're not waterproof but they are comfortable and pair easily. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/Avantree-Bluetooth-Conduction-Headphones-Housework/dp/B07Y1J7RZT/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=avantree+aptx+bone+conduction&qid=1609205776 Sorry, Amazon links are long sometimes. They're $59, and they work great. Of course they came after 5 today, so I was running around in the front yard after dark...
