  1. I found these buttons today while metal detecting. The one on the left is the one I'm interested in. It has 2 holes in it where I guess it was sewn on.
  2. Found this while scouting out another section of woods along a main trail. It's a Harvard Crimsons pin that was gold plated over brass. Also found a 61 silver Canadian quarter. Got excited at first until I whipped the dirt off the rim and saw it wasn't a really old USA coin :( . Also a musket ball and small round.
  3. I found this button in a early 1900’s park in Utah County. I has a 3 point crown in the middle. No luck on the “google machine” so hopefully someone on here may have some insight as to a date and or manufacturer. The Nox read brass area but it was found about 8” with a square nail next to it. thanks for any help with this!
  4. I found this at the same place the 1899 Barber Dime came from, the old farm where I grew up in Wisconsin. It appears to be brass, and the thin strip of metal makes a "bwonggg" sound when plucked. Any guesses?
  5. i m a New member. i Live in Turkey. Love stones and minerals. is this stone galena ? i found the rock in seferihisar . Turkey Thanks....
  6. Found this in P.A in family farm . Looks like a broke golden arrowhead . Not sure any ideas . It's was about a foot in the ground solid the whole way through and very heavy .
  7. Hi guys, a fellow forum member here in Australia detected what I presume is an eagle buckle a few days ago (guessing US in origin). Any help in identifying it would be appreciated. As a side note, we have had a few US Civil War buckles found this year in Oz, most would probably have originated from US prospectors trying their luck our goldfields.
  8. I found this very worn coin on the beach with the Equinox. I'd @ 14 and appears to be similar metal to a nickel. There is the bust of a head on the front looking to the left. The reverse shows the number 5. I've searched Google for octagonal coins with no luck. I found this in an area where I was finding bronze nails from a 1860 shipwreck. Anyone know what it is? Thanks, Tim
  9. This was in the first batch of rocks I tumbled last month. It looks more like something crystalized over a metal object. Any ideas?
  10. Hiyas...I recently dug a part of a pewter flatware. I have never seen a makers mark or other identifying mark on flatware that I have dug before. Putting it under my scope, and fooling around a lot with lighting directions, this is about the best it is going to get. Any one have access to pewter manufacturer information? I am stumped so far. The bottom is METAL, the top left looks like a B or S to me, and the right side I believe is NTA
  11. Hello everyone I'm new to this and I would like to ask for any knowledge pertaining to this rock.....or thoughts thanks
  12. Hello. I was out detecting an old park today that I have been working for a little while which has an interesting history. In the early 1900's it was the site of a hotel, this closed down at some point and during the second world war the building was a military post office. Today it is just an old neglected park. So this morning I found what I think is the back of an old pocket watch, possibly gilded. It has "Made in U.S.A" stamped on it and a slot with small graduations under it it. On the left hand end is the letter "F" and on the right side is the letter "S". I am assuming this is a fast/slow adjustment? I have searched the net trying to find a similar item but with no luck. If anyone has an idea as to it's age I would be most appreciative.
  13. I was hunting some pasture a downhill slope where some area has been levelled out looking like a foundation of some kind. For me it looks like there has been some kind of building or similar but nothing left except green grass. I found this item. Cleaning it up I found 6 sun-markings. 3 to the left of the tip and 3 to the right. Could it be a part of a sundial? Any suggestions on the age?
  14. Hey guys, My first time posting here, hopefully I'm not breaking any rules! My mother recently took some of her old gold jewelry to be melted down into a bracelet. While she was there the jeweler pulled out one of her bracelets saying it was too valuable and shouldn't be melted down. So that's got me trying to find out more about it and what type of chain it is. So far no luck! I thought you guys might know something and have some suggestions whether she should sell it or not! Cheers! Danny.
  15. Well I was out today in a remote locating looking for nuggets with my 2300 and it sounded off on this rock. The area is noted for a lot silver. Not saying it is silver only my PI machine is pretty quiet unless it hits some kind of metal. It was lying on top the ground. It's dark gray to black. Maybe Hematite. Any one no for sure looking at a picture? Has some quarts in it also.
  16. Hi all! Found this rock by a river last summer.. anyone knows what it might be? Looks like a rock inside a rock ? Curious for any answer.
  17. any idea what the material / mineral it is? it`s very shiny, the green reflections are from the plastic lid i had them sitting on
  18. I took my brother-in-law out detecting for his first time ever today. I had him set up with a Teknetics G2 with the ultimate coil. (That coil is a beast. It literally found a staple that he was looking for for a long time with the pinpointer.) Anyway, he found only a few coins However, he did have a unique find for a soccer field in FL. I am attaching some pics hoping someone can shed some light on the find. It looked like, from a quick glance, that there was a goldish color covering a base metal. On my Equinox, it was a solid 17. It seems strange that someone would reproduce a coin that is so heavily worn. Here are some pics he sent me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  19. I have had this gold /quartz specimen for a number of years....and have not been able to figure out the gold weight using the simple formula I found on the internet. For those of you willing to take up the challenge I can give you the dry weight and submerged weight in grams. I have attempted it a few times but I always come up with a negative number for total grams in specimen. Not sure if it means I have under an ounce or not. So here we go...total dry weight is 242 grams....submerged weight ..and by the way I did it properly...is 71 grams. My estimate is 24 grams ...than it ended up 1.4 ounces.. Hopefully a few of you come up with more of an accurate number... Thanks
  20. I found this nugget in the clark fork river in some exposed bedrock with one of my gold detectors. I always assumed it was lead, but after taking close up photographs, I'm not so sure. Any help identifying it would be appreciated. Thank you
  21. Identification Help please. This dragon was found at a site dating 1890 – 1920. All items recovered date the same time frame. Made of high quality brass & is pretty thick 1/4”. 9” in length & about 1 ½” tall. Tip of the tail seems broken? What’s interesting is bottom of chin has some serious serrated edges. Most items from the site are Military so maybe someone in Military might know? If you or one of your friends has an idea, please share & forward to them so I can get to the bottom of this really ornate find & story. Thanks for your help.
  22. Tom and I were able to get out yesterday for some detecting at the same site we posted a few weeks ago. This time I wanted to test another camp site that wasn't far away from the one we got the eagle tongue and groove buckles at. It was supposed to be a larger camp, but it pretty much turned out to be a bust. You could hear iron here and there, and we did get some period conductors, and period iron relics, but nothing to write home about. We did a fairly good job covering it, it just wasn't a productive site, perhaps someone else detected it before we did. I wondered back to the camp we detected a few weeks ago to see if I could locate the other half of my eagle buckle that fell out of my finds pouch, and while that didn't pan out, I did find an old eagle button of some sort. It's a domed one piece cast button, if anyone can ID it, I'd greatly appreciate it. Found another part of an eagle buckle, but no more complete ones on this trip. The only coin dug (old coin, we did manage to dig some pesky clad on this hunt :? ) was a Chinese cache coin, and possibly a toasted copper coin, but not sure about that. Rim fires, musket balls, lead, and hand forged iron and bronze nails/spikes: One piece eagle button, any ideas on the ID? No clue what this is, it may have been made from a copper coin? Old lock? It's cast bronze whatever it is, has a part on the top with a spring lever under it. Couple of iron relics, part of an eagle buckle, love that old copper hand forged hinge: Every one of these copper bits sounded sweet, all sound like coins and some were super deep! No idea what this was??? Almost want to say some kind of hunting point, but it has no edge. [/url] These are frequently found at old sites in California! No clue what this was used for? Bezel is silver, appears to be a finished stone, but cannot see where it attached to anything :S Thanks for looking! Cal
  23. Here is another one for you guys to figure out. I haven't the slightest clue, this one makes my head hurt. It was found in the water. This old bay has an insane asylum built on it dating from the late 1800's. It is also has a ghost town, a failed colonial type trading settlement dating from around 1825. Before that it was a native village but I think it's safe to say this is not native American. It has three stars, or starfish? and a small hole on each side. It measures about an inch across. It weighs about 17 grams but has at least some sand and clay remaining inside. There is no way you guys are going to guess what it is.
  24. Hello guys, new to this site and gold prospecting itself. On my days off i hit the mountains with my metal detector. Dug this rock up, it was hot. Anyway to tell if its the real deal?
