  1. Hi all! I wanted to share a real-world hunting report, from yesterday, at a local public park. I was hunting with my CTX and 17" coil; sensitivity manual 25, ferrous discrimination only, 50 tones, Ferrous-coin separation, deep off, fast off. My buddy was hunting his Equinox, Park 1, 23 sensitivity, recovery 5, iron bias 2, 50 tones, no disc. I was moving along slowly, and "hunting deep," and I hit a soft, repeatable high-tone that I figured was a coin -- around 12-39 to 12-41, so I figured wheat cent. Depth meter showed about 9"-10". I dug, and it was indeed an 8" to 8 1/2" deep 1920 wheat cent. I filled the hole, and started swinging again. A foot away, I hit a very similar signal, but this one just a bit less repeatable. There were a couple of angles where it was hard to get an audio signal on, maybe one out of every 3 or 4 passes I'd get a tone; most angles though, it was fairly repeatable, giving a good, soft high tone on 3 out every 4 sweeps. I could tell this one was nearer the depth limits of the CTX (at least in my dirt, for my skill level), and the depth meter was showing 10" to 11". Again, 12-39, 12-40 type reading. So, pretty sure I had another deep coin, as part of a "pocket spill," this time I called my buddy over to give a listen with his Equinox. He got a soft, entirely repeatable high tone as he rotated and "Minelab wiggled" the target, average ID readings in the mid 20s, right around 25. He guessed copper/wheat cent. So, I handed him the CTX to listen (he knew how to interpret the CTX, as his "other machine" that he's used for nearly 10 years is an E-Trac), and after working the target, he felt the CTX signal was similar to, or maybe not quite as good as, the Equinox. So, next, I listened to the target on the Equinox, and concurred. The signal was indeed a bit more consistent/repeatable on the Equinox as I worked the target. I dug it, and it was a 9" deep 1928-D wheat cent. So, I filled the hole, and started sweeping again. Less than a foot away, I got a repeatable-from-all-directions but inconsistent-sounding signal. I would NOT have dug this signal normally, as it would not have caught my attention if I were just "moving along, hunting normally." It was all over the place, audio-wise, ID numbers teens to mid 20s, more 20s than teens. BUT -- being less than a foot away from the two wheats I just dug, I was listening carefully for ANY repeatable tone, to see if there were any more coins -- and so I gave this one way more attention than I normally would have. That plus the fact that it was showing 8" to 10" on the depth meter, had me interested. Again, moving along hunting "regularly," and not scrutinizing every sound because of working a "pocket spill," the predominantly high teens and 20s ID numbers, and audio "all over the place," would NOT have caught my attention enough in this trashy park for me to stop to investigate. One final reason I was interested, was that I knew this is how a fringe-deep nickel behaves in my test garden. Consistently registers a tone from all angles, BUT nowhere near nickel ID (13 CO number), but instead generally upper teens and 20s conductive numbers. So, I called my buddy back over with his Equinox. I was almost sure he was going to get a very solid-reading, 12-13 IDing target, as I was almost sure it was going to be a deep nickel at this point, and I knew that lots of 12s, and a few 13s, is generally how my Equinox behaves on deep nickels. And that's exactly what he got. A solid, repeatable-from-all-directions 12-13 signal, with an occasional blip of 11, or 14. Mostly 12's. I let him listen on the CTX, and he said "wow, those tones are all over the place." I told him that that is why I dig few deep nickels with the CTX. He let me listen on the Equinox -- a perfectly diggable, easy-to-call nickel-type signal. So I dug it, and it was about an 8" deep Buffalo. Finally, about 5 minutes later, about 10 feet away from the other 3 coins, I got another deep, repeatable high tone. This one showed 8" to 10" deep, with mainly upper 30s to around 40 CO numbers. I called over my buddy, and it was the same as on the first wheat he listened to -- low to mid 20s, with an occasional higher ID, soft but solid and repeatable. I popped the plug on this one, and the numbers for me were now showing a bit lower -- 12-37s in the plug. At that point, reading a bit lower "in the plug" than it did in the ground, we both guessed Indian instead of wheatie. Sure enough, about an 8" deep 1898 Indian Head penny. My long-winded point in all of this, is to share a direct, in the field, head-to-head comparison of the Equinox to the CTX on three different, un-dug targets. This perfectly mirrors the results in my test garden, with the Equinox being just as deep, if not a tad bit more solid on each of the targets I have buried -- pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters (with the largest advantage in the Equinox's favor showing up on the nickels, but still a small advantage on all the coins). This also mirrors most of the comments from other hunters who are posting results. It's for real, guys. While there are still things the CTX does better (such as providing better "dig decision" information, visually, in a much more thorough way, AND allowing you to avoid more trash, more easily), the Equinox is a very, very impressive performer. Just as deep if not a tad deeper, and a better hunter in trash/iron... Steve
  2. It’s been a struggle to get out and hunt lately as I edge closer to my 2nd hip replacement but I got to run my 600 on a small beach north of Ventura this morning that I’ve always wanted to hit. It’s a small beach but gets lots of use as a day camp area on the Rincon. The dry sand produced over 30 bottle caps and there is no question what is when you hear it. I only dug them so I could clean out the area when I return. The wet sand was pretty quiet but I netted the two rings in it. The turquoise/silver was a consistent 23 and the junk ring rang at 13-14 I thought I had white gold when I saw it in the scoop. I hope to get out one more time between now and next Friday as that is surgery day. Getting older sure does put a crimp in the lifestyle ?
  3. First report I have seen from somebody getting Equinox actually underwater - this guy on Findmall down to 8 feet with no issues - and some gold!
  4. I'm not sure if it's just my machine or the way the Equinox behaves, but, when I first go into pinpoint mode, my audio seems muted half the volume of 25. After a couple of passes, it goes to full audio. Anyone else have this happen?
  5. I went out early this morning. I was expecting a cut as there had been a 3 hour period of high waves during high tide. As it turned out it was more of a 'blow over' than a cut so after about an hour it was time to move. My next beach was less blown over so I settled in for a bit. Finally I found a few quarters and that can mean rings! So it was today. My first ring was the 18. This made me circle, grid and look near for another. About 20 feet away I got the 16. Nice 2 ring morning before 7 AM. I kept hunting and found the cheap tennis bracelet and then I got the 8, the 3rd ring. I'll give the composition of the ring and you tell me which number goes with it. I'll come .back Thursday Night and tell you the number that goes with the ring There is a copper ring in the top center. There is a silver .925 ring on the left with a nice little amethyst. There is 18k GP ring with a larger glass or crystal on the right. Mitchel
  6. New member here, long time lurker. My Equinox 800 that I pre-ordered back in November has finally shipped. Trying to understand what to expect moving from a Minelab Go Find 40 that I've had for about a year (my first and only detector) to the 800. The go find 40 has been a lot of fun - had really good luck when I first got it but lately I've found it very difficult to retrieve targets in soil or sand. I end up finding good signals but end up digging endlessly and often am unable to retrieve anything (I've dug some massive holes in my back yard chasing signals). I have a decent pinpointer (the MI-6) but am still struggling. When I watch youtube I always see folks dig very precise plugs and almost always find something! Will the 800 help me get more precise with target retrieval areas or is my retrieval technique just off? Nothing is more frustrating then digging a hole and coming up empty handed...
  7. Supposedly From Minelab's website: (TreasureNet post today)An important update on the Detect Modes… Previously we have stated that Park, Field and Beach would run in multi-frequency and that Gold would only use the single frequencies of 20kHz and 40kHz, giving better results for gold nugget hunting. Our ongoing collaborative field testing feedback from around the world has resulted in further improvements to Multi-IQ to the point where multi-frequency is now the best option for Gold Mode as well, and will be the default setting. Please refer to the revised Getting Started Guide for updated product functions. Caveat: I found this on TreasureNet, and I can't validate its authenticity, but sounds about right. This could be from early testing because I can't find the source on Minelab's site.
  8. Had a chance to do a beach that was not very productive last fall. I did not want to keep hitting the same beaches, as I would have to move on sooner or later, so I tried this beach out. I wanted to see if the 800 would get anything. This beach was heavily sanded in and only the light targets were shallow. The good stuff was deep. I knew it was going to be tough finding any gold so I decided to hit the beach early and stay late. 11 hours and I was able to get a partial gold (9k?) high school ring, and probably a 14K white gold ring (says 585). The other ring is 14K FG and is not gold. Two .925 rings add to the better finds. Rest is clad and junk. The Equinox made the hunt on one charge but was down to its last bar. I don't think it would have lasted much longer. Next week's hunt will have very bad tidal coefficient (between +0.5 and +0.7) on the beaches I hunt. Not a low enough tide to get the areas I like to hunt. We shall see what the 800 does that week. I still amazed this machine has kept me in the gold streak for this long.
  9. My neighbor has been coming over my house asking for a snow shovel I have since he knows I'm moving. Saturday he came over and I gave it to him and asked if I can detect his front yard quickly. My neighborhood was built in the 50's and I've found silver in almost every yard I've been to. My first target was a 28/29 and sounded like it was right on top of the ground. I dug down a little and saw a silver edge and grabbed the coin and I didn't realize what it was at first but I saw the queen and a date and realized it was a Canadian quarter, 1963. That's all the good stuff I found there Later that night I went back to the baseball field that I found the white gold band in and got this horrible sounding signal (Park 1, 50 Tones) I thought it was just big iron so I dug it to see if I was right. It was down pretty deep and when I got it out it was still not a great sounding signal but then I realized why. It was on edge and I was catching it off the edge of the coil, not in the center. Again I pulled it out and saw a silver rim, this time it was a 1952 Washington quarter. I also found 2 junk earrings about 3 feet apart, the first one I found rang up as 18 and I swept around that area and got another solid 18 and dug the other earring. Pretty funny that I found both but I used the ID from one to determine where the other one was. On Sunday I went to an old baseball field (on the 1940's map) that's kind of overgrown now. My cousin just got an equinox 600 and I was helping him out trying to learn it. He yells over to me "What's a 17" I said I have no idea but if its solid dig it. He did and yelled over that is was a 1943 P nickel. I was telling him how awesome it was that he dug that and that it was a coin that was still eluding me. Then right after I said that I got a solid 14 and dug it and it ended up being a 1942 P nickel, sweet! About 5 steps back I got a 25/26/27 signal and was hoping for a silver dime and out popped a 1924 Merc. After that I walked to where I thought the infield was and got a solid 12. I thought maybe an older nickel but out popped another 1942 P war nickel. Now that's 3 that all rang up different. We were both in Park 1. He was in 5 tones and I was in 50. Later on I got a solid 18 and got a shield with a cross, fleur de lys and lions on it. I typed that into google when I got home and it turns out it was part of a brooch from the 60's. Last, I got a 20/21 but it was reading deeper so I dug it and it ended up being an old toy car. Here are some shots...If you've read this far and are interested in the car it's all yours. Otherwise I'll probably toss it...Oh, my cousin also found a flat button with loop on back (shank I think it's called) that rang up a solid 22 he said. I dont have a picture of that though
  10. Vferarri hit it out of the park with his recent post on TreasureNet. Exceptionally clear and concise explanation of EQ settings, depth performance and modes! His post is #8 in the thread. http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/equinox/576820-depth-performance-question.html#post5798951 I think that post is worthy of nomination to the "Essential Information" thread!
  11. I have just ordered a box 800. I have been going through treads for awhile now. I was thinking it might help to have a single source thread with links to the must read threads. Such as Mr H's review some by our new Zealand guys. I was hoping Mr.H could kick this off with the top 5. Any thoughts?
  12. Sometimes my Equinox is so easy to turn on or off but next time I just can’t get my finger just right. I find myself giving it my blessing but then out of the blue it’s doing it’s thing. I’m wondering if others like me have the same problem. This is the only thing I’ve found to be a pain in the back side with my Equinox. Chuck
  13. Has anyone tested the universal axis of the golden mask on the equinox? I like that type of axis in my detectors but I do not know if it fits well in the equinox
  14. At long last (and sometimes not so patiently waiting), my Equinox E800 is scheduled to arrive at my home tonight. Unfortunately, I was travelling for work all last week - so I wasn't able to do any hunting, but just before I left town I spent some time at a 1940's school with my E600. In all my time detecting, I have found only one Half - a clad Kennedy. I have had better luck finding various dollar coins. So when I got a solid 35-36 signal I was expecting a nice sweet piece of bent rusty iron... but to my surprise, I found a beautiful silver rim at 7". A few steps away, a more broken, but solid 30-31 signal revealed the Washington on edge... and was off center to the pin point by about 4inches - at a depth of 7". A part of me hesitates to transition to the E800 after all the success I have had with the E600. But of course, I am very excited to utilize the additional functionality of the E800. While my time with the E600 will not be ending (I plan on equipping it with the 6" or 15" coils when they are released, as well as using it for water hunting), if the E800 exceeds my experience with the E600 - that will be INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE based on my experience with the E600 over the past few months. HEH (Happy Equinox Hunting) to all. - Tim.
  15. Spent another three hours hunting around some foundation slabs of demolished homes on base this morning. The 600 is really starting to talk to me! Unbelievable how many dimes I pulled out on both hard and wispy hits today. I also am really beginning to like 50-tones vs 5. The final learning task today was starting to understand the language of target masking. It's becoming real for me, and I was able to dig some coins today in the middle of trash. WOW! Park 1, NC, GB, 25 vol, 50-Tones, 22 sens, all non-ferrous open, speaker today. Being the conscientious and honest person that I am, I know that GI Joe is probably apoplectic about losing his dog tags, so if anyone knows how to contact him, or his girlfriend Barbie, I'd be happy to send them back to him! Today's take: Yet another 30cal cartridge in a housing area!!?? Added three more cars to my growing Matchbox and HotWheels car collection. A cufflink (first), and a Belgian pin of some sort. Participation coin made of some light non-ferrous metal at 13". 13 Dimes, 14 Copper Pennies, 2 wheaties (1944 oldest), 4 quarters. Poor GI Joe! Needs his DogTags! Misc Coins
  16. Ive got quite a few hours now in the water...... so i checked the jack i made and undid a screw on the handle to check it as well. The water you see dripping isnt all of it..... seems water does get into the lower handle area..... note that sand does as well. Im hoping over the long hall it doesnt become a problem since those parts appear to be brass and brass does bleed. Got my fingers crossed they are right and there is no way for that water to get to the batteries. Think about that thou if you change your own batteries. Dew
  17. For those who hunt in low light/wear gloves and don't want to look at the control box everytime you press a button...added these adhesive domed, rubber drawer stops to the control box cover. I used 11mm for the pinpoint button and 8mm for the rest.
  18. Hi All Just wondering if there are any Australian Equinox user’s that’d be Kind enough to share there VDI numbers that they’ve figured out so far to help new user’s in there learning curve of particular numbers to keep an eye out for. Cheers
  19. This morning i went to the beach at 3am so i could work out the tide and would have been there at 1am but overslept . I only went on a small section of beach as the rest was not really that good after giving it a check . Gladly i found a good spot and pulled a number of coins out , i found a Cross too but cant see a hallmark so cannot say if its Silver or not . My total was 1.20 Euro's , the Cross , 2 other foreign coins and £18.53p . In the picture one of the Pound coins in the second row turned out to be the Euro coin after cleaning . I am still not getting more than 6 maybe 7 inches of depth from the Nox but still cannot say if its the machine or the beach . My next search will be early on Wednesday but i will use the ET as the Nox wont work on the dry tops due to serious EMI from the clubs along the seafront or something . The ET and Terra can handle it and i know their tones but the Nox is very different . The only best place for the Nox on my beaches is between the low and high tide points . I have another 800 ordered and have found a buyer for my Explorer 11 but i dont know whether to buy the second Nox or not or keep the E 11 ? Its a pity there are so few of the machines out there in a way , i could do with another person using the Nox on my beaches to see if they have the same issues . As it happens i might have to postpone my second machine anyway due to something else , might have a Holiday to book for Mum and i to Oz at some point . I will take the Nox to Oz for a hunt on their beaches . Not sure when that will be .
  20. Tim messaged me today and said "your Equinox is here" I'll give it a go asap here in Sw mo. She's charging right now but had to play in the yard a bit. ?
  21. I got an update today from the USPS, stating that the MPOW APTX LL over-ear headphones I ordered from AliExpress have finally arrived in the USA after two weeks from China. I should have them by Tuesday or Wednesday and will post a review here once I have a chance to test them on my EQ600. The company's other headphones have received very positive reviews on a number of sites, so I expect that the new phones will also meet the high expectations. They were about $53.00 Shipped. 22. Took the Nox out for a door knock adventure yesterday. I was cruising the historic section of town and parked in front of an old Victorian house. I decided to do the curb strip to see what kind of reception I might get. About two minutes in I hit a sweet sounding 31/32 signal and out popped the silver ring. I continue to hunt and as I'm hunting I hear loud music coming from the house. Turns out it's a few young guys practicing in their garage! When they took a break I went up and asked if I could detect their property. No problem. So, not only did I get to detect but I got to listen to some damn good music as well. If I stood down wind of the garage and inhaled deeply...well, it reminded me of my first Pink Floyd concert! What I remember of it. Anyway, I came away with a few goodies and was invited back. Cool token, suspenders buckle, button, and ring. Wheaties but no silver coinage...yet. Gonna go back soon. Park 2, Sens 20, 50 tones, Iron bias 1, response 6, factory disc or AM depending on my mood. Dean
  23. At Gerry’s Metal Detectors, we’ve noticed a consistent physical defect with the supplied Equinox headphones in three of our staff members’ personal units. The small plastic piece that is screwed down over the end of the headband padding is breaking at the stress point located between the two screw holes; upon opening one brand new unit, the broken piece was found already detached and lying on the bottom of the headphone case. Folks, please inspect your headphones at the affected area (see pics below) and report back here. Hopefully it’s not a widespread issue. Normal, undamaged part: Broken part, with upper half of plastic piece missing:
  24. So...started working the second block of demolished housing on base, but the pickings were slim on that block. Too much debris from the homes that were torn down. Worked it for about two hours, and got a severe headache, so I headed home to Ibuprofen, and some rest. Couldn't go back due to my son coming home from school in an hour, so I decided to just hunt a couple of the vacant homes right across the street while I looked out for his bus. Surprise! The two front yards yielded their hidden treasures. So many more homes to go and the demolished areas as well! Changed up a bit today. Went with the factory setting for Park2, and only switched to 5 tones while I still get used to the 600's quirks. Today's take: Copper Pennies: 19 Clad Dimes: 5 Clad Quarters: 4 Nickels: One 1961 Fishing Lure: Side Winder in great condition Find of the day: 1957 Silver Quarter....found in the median strip between the sidewalk and street. BIG surprise seeing that silver color in the plug! Tomorrow it's family hunt day with my wife and son learning their ACE 300's and me swingin' the Nox! Surprise find where least expected:
