  1. I just recently purchased the Garrett Carrot Pinpointer. I really like it. The issue is the GPZ7000 does not like to be within 4 feet of it. And that is with the pinpointer off. I swing the detector with my left arm. I put the pinpointer in my finds sack on my right rear belt side. Every time I swing right I would get a signal from the pinpointer. My pick, old pinpointer, and trash in the sack, no problem. But the Garrett Carrot sets the GPZ7000 off. I really like the pinpointer, but can't carry it with me. Will have to leave it with my water and lunch and go get it when the rare times I need it.
  2. For about 2 months I've been experiencing a short "cut-out" occasionally, as I'm detecting. The best way to describe it is the way my GPX 5000 would cut out in discrimination mode with the DD coil, it's just like that. It's quite annoying because it disrupts my rhythm causing me to re-swing where it just hiccupped. I just spoke to Minelab, they put me on hold then gave me Jerry's (Jerry's detectors) number and asked me to call him. That seemed odd. We talked about the problem for a while and decided the first thing to try is, connect the headphones directly to the detector to determine whether the module is the issue. Has anyone else experienced this?
  3. The GPZ documentation states that General mode punches deeper and Extra Deep punches even deeper than High Yield mode. I've hammered a patch in High Yield and today will switch to General mode and regrid, and will repeat in Extra Deep. Has anyone out there had success with this, and if so, are the deeper targets more defined in these 2 deeper modes, any tricks to listen for? Or are these deeper modes only for larger nuggets, will the 2 modes punch deeper for smaller nuggets too?
  4. Gary Schafer of Minelab America announced today at the GPAA Las Vegas Show that a 19" - 20" coil is officially in the works. Great effort and therefore time are going into trying to keep this coil as close to the weight of the stock 14" x 13" coil as is absolutely possible. No projected time frame for release was announced but since they are still hard at work in it the implication was not any time super soon. Sorry, wish I had more than that to offer but at least you know now a big coil will happen before a small coil.
  5. I seen this issue on the oz forum...is anyone besides me having a problem with the 12v charger for the gpz? I have two- one for my ctx and one for the 7000 and they both behave badly...when I plug one into the 12v outlet in my truck it starts flashing red while charging. The manual says this means there may not be enough battery to pull juice from the truck battery...my truck battery is brand new. So, I carry a small invertor and plugged that into the 12v outlet, then the battery charger into the inverter...the charger worked fine but my truck battery was drawn down and I had to jump it... so, the second question is this; does the inverter draw a huge amount of amps to go from 12v to 110v to charge a the zed battery??? Also, is the sensitivey of the minelab chargers adjustable ???? thanks fred
  6. I am looking for a new flex link for the swing arm helper that broke from wear. Decided to check the Kellyco web site since no one seems to have that part listed and see that the gpz7000 is now listed on their site for $7999.00 US. http://www.kellycodetectors.com/catalog/gpz-7000
  7. I'll start with the ugly. The lower shaft on the GPZ is made out of what appears to be a porous ABS plastic. Down close to the coil it is also ridiculously, disgustingly. unbelievably thin. Now the bad. My feet are shaped like a 17" elliptical mono coil. And worse yet is the control cable to my brain sometimes looses connection. So I was detecting on some very steep and slick ground and stumbled and set my GPZ coil down instinctively to catch myself . I have done this at least a million times with every detector I have ever owned and never damaged any thing. Not so with the Z. The shaft broke at the coil ears. I cobbled it back together with a couple of sticks, some electric tape and a spare shoe lace and finished the day (it was 2 mile+ hike into this spot). Now the good. Doc had one in stock and went to great effort to get it in the mail that same day. I somehow get the feeling that this shaft was designed on a computer by a computer genius who's computer told him that this design was adequate. It's not.
  8. I found this video for you ZED users showing some accessories that you might find useful for protecting some of the bits that matter, They were posted else where but after I watched the video then this video popped up so I thought it might be usefull.. john
  9. Steve likes rumors and I heard a good one recently. I heard the GPZ 7000 will be put on sale with a notable price drop in the near future. Can't say much more than that right now, but I heard it from a reliable source. Just about all the ML detectors have gone on special offers in recent months and it appears the flagship 7000 will soon join them. So if you've been wanting one and waiting, you may have a special opportunity here shortly.
  10. I'm pretty new at chasing the yellow stuff with approx. 200hrs gpz use under my belt & reading detector prospector forum with much interest & learning lots. Thank you all !! I have been detecting a patch over the past month getting 1 & 2 gramers here & there, unfortunately at the moment due to work commitments i can only detect during the day. Using the zed factory pre-set setting and adjusting the sensitivity, ground type & audio smoothing on or off, was wondering if someone could help answer these questions. Does the temperature of the ground influence the clarity & or the signal strength ? If i come back in winter when the ground is colder will the ground noise be less ?. How about freshly rain soaked ground !! does that make a difference to GN or signal strength. Cheers ozgold
  11. Sourdough Scott drove 40 miles on icy roads to come help me install the upgrades into the Z. My old computer had a bit of a rough time with it as little signs popped up saying YA CAN'T GET THERE FROM HERE! and I AINT A GONNA DO IT! Scott had just about given up when we noticed the screen on the detector showed that the upgrade was loading. So now I'm all up to date. I pains me to admit that I am quit impressed with the technology. I sure hope Minelab put all the screws back in when they were done. We took the detector out the next day and I can honestly say - I couldn't tell any difference. But one short day is not a fair or complete test. The one change I did notice was in the threshold tone. Now instead of a soothing mosquito hum I get a continuous loop of the chorus from Waltzing Matilda and a disgusting burp replaces the low-high signals and a hiccup replaces the high-low signals. That SS is a funny guy. Knowing the origin of the song, I can' help but Norvic might have had a hand in the bad joke. But I'll say THANK YOU SCOTT anyway.
  12. Jonathan or anyone else...has anyone used severe and in what situations? I tried that setting in the dale and it quieted the ironstone down a bunch. I expected and did see a reduction in response to very small targets. fred
  13. Yesterday I was sitting in my office doing year end paper work and within sight is the 7000 hanging on the store room wall. about noon, a little devil voice on my shoulder says "let's go detecting". Then a little angel voice on my other shoulder says "You promised this year you wouldn't shirk your responsibilities to go detecting." Then the little devil voice says "There are storms predicted for the whole week . We could be snowed in for the rest of the winter!" Then the little angel voice says "He's right. The hell with being responsible." I loaded up the Jeep and drove to the only place that I thought the snow might be melted off enough to do a bit of nugget hunting. This particular spot has 3 major problems. It's been hammered for years, it is covered with hot rocks and it has a high voltage electric transmission line right through the middle of it. I have always been able to work this area with other detectors by making adjustments and changing coils. Not so with the Z. It was absolutely helpless. The only way to quiet it down was to turn it off so I gave up. On my way back to the Jeep I decided "I'm going to get rid of this thing." Further more, I thought I could make a statement by selling it for 40% off of the original price of $10,000. That makes it $6,000. Then I remembered one very small area of old workings that was about 1000' from the power lines. There the 7000 was it's usual well behaved self and I immediately found a nice small chunky nugget. "O.K." I thought. "I'll raise my price by 10%. That made it $7,000. I was only able to detect for about an hour before it was getting dark and too danged cold but by that time my Z was up to $12,000.
  14. ZED I have it narrowed down that GPZ 7000 = ZED I tried googling it and get directed to forums and people with forum post stating they love their "ZED" Went to Minelab.com and the closet I could find was ZVT (Zero Voltage Transmission) So I give up, decided to ask here. Is ZED just a nickname for the GPZ 7000 or does it actually stand for something ? Anyhow have been reading all the post and keep running into ZED so curiosity got me and trying to figure out ZED. gregg
  15. i went to the dale mining district with the intention of "testing" various settings used by Steve H, Lunk, Jonathan Porter and some others. Those three were the main ones I used. I camped on El Dorado's famous patch, a place I usually camp. I nearly froze Monday morning when the temp was 29 degrees F.Not be be deterred I put on my long woolies,a wool sweater at-shirt and overshirt and a vest...I had so many clothes on my harness hardly snapped shut...plus Christmas Goodies increased my bulk a little bit. I found my first nugget within 10 minutes right where me and a small army have detected ever since ED gave that patch away-he is a generous soul! I was very surprised because the area had been hit by many including SDC and GPZ users...plus it was almost 1/2 gram. I almost forgot the main purpose of my trip...so after a small celebration in appreciation I renewed my purpose. The first setting I tried were Jp's which he described in the info he provides with his BZ Booster and Dual Speakers...I love the dual speakers with the wireless module. His setting were very compatible to me except I had to lower the tone to 57...The mosquito hum gives me an instant headache! Next I gave Steve's insane setting a try...I gave them a go for 30 minutes but could not stand the noise. I did find the targets came through very clearly but none were golden. Next I gave Lunks a go. HIs low-tone settings were very comfortable and produced small bits of lead and a couple of goodies...but I felt that JP's settings were better with the BZB and DS setup-which makes sense to me because Jonathan has many hours of trial and error invested in his product. The most amazing thing to me was 7 little nuggets came out of a very small, extremely well hunted area. I found one other in the area I found several nuggets and meteorite pieces...I would love to take full credit for skill and patience but the GPZ was an equal or greater partner in getting these little bits. Not much in weight but worth a lot in increased skill and confidence. I found my smallest gpz nugget to date...it was .08 of a gram that is 8/100ths of a gram...the total was about 1 and 1/2 grams... fred
  16. ***Editor's note - the following thread was split off from one about air tests and their reliability or lack thereof at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/1472-minelab-x-terra-705-vs-garrett-ace-250/*** Steve H How are we then to believe the depth charts released by ML comparing the 7000 with the 5000 and 2300?
  17. I've been running Steve' s insanely hot settings non-stop for the past month. I got my first ferrite very recently and have done daily start-up ground balancing, but keep it under the 10 second rule per JP. My perception is the detector takes a few hrs to settle in. At start-up in the morning she's pretty jittery but settles down after some run time. Today I got into a field of strewn volcanics and it was a mess. Those hot settings really light up the volcanics and my only solution was to remove self from affected area. I ran into a guy running a GPX 4800 and he had also surrendered to the overload from the same volcanics. Conversely, I covered some nearby shallow gullies and tiny nuggets were lit up like surface trash. I got 7 nuggets that totaled 2.8 grams and everyone of them sounded off like a booming piece of trash. The deepest target I dug was maybe 8 inches but sounded like bullet frag on the surface. Today I chased one seam of red clay for a good long while, but when I switched to "difficult" it disappeared while still running a Sensitivity of 20. Granted, I'm running some fairly quiet ground in SW AZ, so I have the advantage of letting the detector settle down before it drives me crazy with its antics. I also have the advantage of detecting 3 or 4 hrs a day for at least 5 days a week, so we are mutually getting used to each other. I don't think you can go out for a weekend in variable ground and expect these settings to work for you. Your hearing and sanity will give out long before the detector settles in and your brain settles in to the nuances of this kind of detecting. I was detecting with a fellow 7K user a couple weeks ago and he was running Sens 10 and still finding sub-gram nuggets and covering twice the ground. It's working for me so I'm sticking with it. As Nevada Chris says "your mileage may vary".
  18. Hi Steve Guy's The first vid of season 2015 is now on youtube. I hope you guys enjoy.
  19. where do i find the update for the 7000 and how do you install it for ground balance
  20. The cumulative effect of the GPZ ground balance storage Observation: I ran Steve's Hot settings, HY, Normal, Sens 20, Threshold 35, Smoothing Low for several days in a row and the machine seems to be running as stable as before I switched to the hot settings. The desert southwest ground is fairly mild, especially where I've been working lately, but I know when I first started running these settings my machine was noisy, growling and squealing unless I slowed my sweep speed way down to a crawl. Now, the machine seems to have really settled down and I can increase my sweep speed without a bunch of extra noise. I did the Minelab update but I never had the ferrite to do that particular ground balance procedure. Question: Is the machine storing the ground balance information such that it now recognizes this ground and has made enough internal adjustment to account for a noticeably quieter machine, or is it just my own brain and hearing have made the adjustment and I have imagined the improvement? I just received a Minelab ferrite,( thanks to Rob @ NuggetHunting.com), but now I'm afraid to re-ground balance and F up a good thing by clearing that stored data. What's a guy to do in this situation? By the way, I got a deep, faint tone today and experimented with the settings some. The results are probably moot since the target was a piece of wire down about 14 inches, but I got as good a tone if not better on this target with the General, Normal, 20 sens setting. When I backed the Sens down to 15, neither HY nor General picked up the signal. Switching Smoothing off, I got an awful lot of chatter and the signal was very hard to hear through the chatter.
  21. Greetings from the sun soaked sands of the desert southwest. The weather has been perfect the last few weeks here in the Quartzsite regional placer area of Arizona, and so far my trusty GPZ 7000 has recovered over 60 nuggets from some of the old patches, with a total weight of one troy ounce. With lots more winter prospecting season left, it's time to hit the rugged Arizona outback in search of new nugget patches. Good luck out there!
  22. Here in sunny Yuma by the Sea I've been having reasonable success on sub gram nuggets running the 7k in HY Normal with sens at 16 with a nearly silent threshold. I don't have the same noise tolerance as Steve H. But, after seeing JP weigh in and Lunk reiterating comments on Steve's Insanely Hot settings I thought I'd better give er a go. I was feeling poorly so I decided to make it real easy on myself just to try the settings. I drove out 30 minutes from home to an old placer operation that has been absolutely hammered over the past 10 yrs. I picked out a dozer push and fiddled with the settings described by JP. 5 minutes into it I hit a sweet tone. About 6 inches down in hardened caliche out pops a half grammer. I tried to ignore all sharp surface targets since the 7k loves that steel shed from the dozer. Half hr another really soft smooth signal. Micro gram nugget. So ended day one of the test. 2 hrs 2 micro nuggets. It gets real good on day 2. Details to follow.
  23. Well they say, "Even a blind squirrel will pick up an acorn every now and then..." Finally got my first 7000 fatty today! Seems like once I disregarded Chris Porter's pointy finger and got lost, I finally got one. This is the same one who lets me borrow his extra battery, ferrite ring, and feeds me spaghetti for supper... Here you go...this is a weird one and maybe that's why no one got it yet.... By the way, I was having a hard time with noise over the damp salt and desert pavement, but I remembered I had printed out Lunk's settings so I thought I would give them a try... Within 5 minutes I got this nugget.....coincidence???... This was on a hammered club claim so what do you think my settings were for the rest of the day.. PS I have Steve's settings printed out too, but there was no way I could use them here, it was just too noisy already.... Thx everyone.. Paul 4" deep, damp ground, in a clod, .75dwt Cleaned it up a little with some salt and vinegar
  24. I got to see one of these recently and it is the best cover for the GPZ 7000 I have seen and at a very reasonable price. Retail is $129 but most everyone seems to have it for US$109 which is a really great price in my opinion. Cheap insurance for a 10K detector! According to Doc: • Covers are made of durable heavy duty green canvas like material with a neoprene lining to cushion your expensive metal detector. • The kit includes the control box cover, the control head screen cover, and a cover for your Wireless module. • Easy access drop down rear panel to easily change the battery without having to take the entire cover off. • Easy access flap to plug your headphones directly in to the detector secured by hook and loop. • The bottom of the cover is made with single ply conveyor belt material. This makes the bottom tough as nails and easy to wipe the dirt and dust off with just a damp cloth. If anyone has one on their GPZ now would be a great time to post a photo!
  25. Starting the process today. The GPZ has lost about 10% of the screen pixels manifested in vertical lines, along with going totally blank a few times. So off it goes to the Windy City for repair. Questions for those thats have returned a unit, How long did it take? Did you return everything or just the control module? Not sure I can handle more then a few days separation
