  1. Found this yesterday while searching a site that previously produced a Civil War cartridge box plate. I don't remember the exact location of that previous find, but the pictured stirrup was found within 30 m of its location. (Hopefully I don't prejudice responses with this tidbit....) As mentioned previously when I posted that find, it's over 100 miles to the nearest CW battlefield. At that time I was pretty sure the box plate was a 'souvenir' drop from a homestead family member who had participated in the war. It is possible there were practice maneuvers at this location, although I haven't found any written evidence that supports such. All I know is that this site was previously a 19th Century homesite and I'm in what was previously a pasture. It's been a municipal park for 51 years so almost certainly dropped before that. The condition is pretty decent but I haven't found a manufacturers mark (and frankly don't know where to look for that). My guess is that this was made in a blacksmith shop and not a mass produced item, but I'm about that least knowledgeable person on this subject. Any help in identifying will be appreciated. Oh, this was a 3 1/2 hour hunt, hoping for some old coins. 7 cents (modern coinage) was all I got in the coin category, so the stirrup saved the day. It TID'ed in the upper teens on the Minelab Equinox.
  2. Looking for anyone who has hunted Civil War locations in the 70’s, 80’ & 90’s in Dekalb county, Georgia that might wish to share locations and help me out. I am looking for Civil War camp sites, river or stream crossing or skirmishes that happened in Dekalb county in Metro Atlanta, Georgia. Or if you know someone who has hunted those areas in the past that would be helpful also if you could give me their contact information. Please send me a private message with any info.
  3. I tagged the bullets and my buddy got the S.C. Button....
  4. I have a question pertaining to restoration of iron artifacts. Has anyone used Parrafin Oil at all to say coat an axe head or similar article in rather than using using the hot dip Parrafin Wax method? I have some relics whereby they are delaminating, and wondered if perhaps after wire brushing, spraying with wd40 that I could use Parrafin Oil? TIA for your answers.
  5. Jan 25th and 26th. Colonial site. Cuff-link with green stone, flat button, buckles and more. My youtube channel.. My latest video.. DetectorMoe Cuff-link with green stone, I been told it dates late 17th to mid 18 century, buckles and other things.
  6. Found four old buttons near a dugout in north Texas. Just hoping someone has any info on these. Thanks
  7. it finally happened- Someone granted me permission to hunt a piece of property that dates back 1840's as build date. My 2 detectors are the XP ORX and Teknetics T2SE with a small Cors Shrew coil. I imagine this place will be littered with iron objects as it was used as a farm site after 1870-ish. All the original buildings are intact, except a chicken coop or two. The place is mostly untouched and this coming spring there will be restoration performed on the main house and other buildings. Real slim window here and wouldn't you know in the coldest months here. So what I'm asking from the experienced people here, and especially those with Tekentics T2 experience or XP ORX experience what things would you suggest when tackling an older place like this? While I've had decent luck finding coins and such in more modern areas have not hunted a site this old before. There is no idea if this property has been metal detected before so I don't know about that. Will the finds be deeper and out of reach of my equipment or masked by oodles of iron? Any guidance is appreciated and any tweaks to settings that may help find interesting things.
  8. Did some CW relic hunting in Virginia this week using a variety of detectors including a GPX, Equinox 800, and a Deus and came away with some great relic finds. In a single hole I found a lead disc which is a possible backing to breast plate, part of a sword belt hanger, a dropped Sharps minie ball, and a purposely flattened Eagle I Coat button (possible poker chip) along with some glass and plate shards including a piece that had the word "Baltimore" on it. the Equinox got me into that hole, probably due to the lead disc, despite terribly hot soil. At another site, I hit my bucket lister, my first US Cavalry bit boss along about a foot down using a GPX 4800 with some other dropped and fired bullets and balls, some cannon friction primers, and other pieces of brass including a flat button found elsewhere in the fields. All in all, it was a great week with that bit boss being the highlight. Thanks for stopping by.
  9. I went out yesterday with my Equinox 800 to a previously located site and found a few more square cut nails and a few other interesting items. Well, actually 84 more square cut nails. Using Field 1, changed to 5 tones, recovery speed 4, F2 at 2. Makes you wonder why/how that many square cut nails ended up in such a concentrated area. Quite a few of them were found just using my pinpointer. It's always fun getting out in the woods and doing some relic hunting instead of the usual coinshooting in local parks.
  10. Some items i located in a beach road cut, i noticed something sticking out of thr newly exposed bank. Mosst of these items had been deeply buried...
  11. Posted on the relic and coin hunting forum, just in case the link doesn't work:
  12. Been a while since I put together a video, but over Labor Day weekend I worked a ghost town putting the Equinox 800 to the test and it didn't disappoint! HH, Cal
  13. I went back to the place we've been hunting all year with the Nox to try some different settings at a spot that we hit several times before. I hit it with the CTX using the 11" and 6" coil and the Nox using the 11" and 6" coil earlier this year. Today I ran the 800 with the 11" coil with these settings: Park 1 Recovery speed 3, used recovery speed 6 the last times. Iron bias 0, have always ran 0 Manual GB this time instead of factory preset of 0 Sensitivity of 23 2 Tones No disc, dug everything from +9 and up All the mini balls and buttons were deep, 8+ inches and gave a repeatable tone. I used a much slower and deliberate sweep this time compared to a faster swing in the beginning. All in all, I was very pleased with the outcome, my plan is to go back and come at it from a different direction next time.
  14. We killed it today at the honey hole... I tagged the plate on the first signal..
  15. Few relics from the hunt yesterday. My buddy pulled all the bullets. I got the 1700s jewelry though!
  16. Been hunting a spot close to home its still giving up some cool finds. The wheat penny is struck off center?....only the 19 is visible on the date. Maybe GB- Amateur knows something about these types of coins? The rifleman's badge is stamped sterling and also you can see part of a bracelet in the first photo that is stamped sterling as well. This spot has gotta have a gold ring It's just a matter of time. Been having fun hunting down here in the Bay area but I really need to get up to the peace and quiet of the mountains for a couple days of gold hunting.
  17. I got out this past Sunday to hunt a place we hunted a couple weeks back to give it another pounding. It's a WW1/WW2 dump site out in the desert, it looks to have been burned somewhere and dumped here and spread out. Just under the surface is powdered ash, some things look burnt, others don't. It's littered with every type of metal you can think of, copper, alum, brass, lead and iron everywhere. I was running park 1, using the 6" coil, recovery speed 6, sens 18, 0 disc, 0 iron bias, 2 tones with my tone break at 17 and ground balance at 0 I decided to go over the same area that me and another guy had hit previously only from a different direction, ? man we both suck lol, it was like we never hunted it before. I spent close to 9 hours going slowly thru all the crap, I was amazed at how much we had missed !! I finally had to call it a day when it hit 104 ? As you can see, it pays to hit a spot from different directions multiple times. My favorite finds are the large rosettes, the 2 WW1 dog tags, the heart rosette and the collar buttons.
  18.
