  2. You might be thinking, what is the big deal, but... This dime came from a hunted out site using the TDI and the OZ 12" coil. The coil was loaned to me by GB_Amateur aka Steve. I have been hunting this small area, maybe 50' x 100' for over 2 years. This site has given up many silver and copper coins. The site has also been hunted by two of my hunting buddies using the CTX 3030, Whites DFX, Fisher F75 and of course the TDI. The OZ coil is super deep in this area and extremely stable. I also dug over 10 nice large nails prior to finding this dime. I must admit I had been purposely looking for only the deeper sounding targets and ignoring the shallow one. I might add one more thing, all the nails sounded about the same, but I dug anyway. On the other hand the dime sounded strange compared to the nails. Can't explain the actual sound, but hope to soon, hear it again. If possible I might try to record the actual audio and post for all to hear. May be a few days before getting to hunt again, weather will turn much colder this weekend. Thanks again Steve.
  3. Well my 8 x 14 coil came yesterday and I got to hunt at an old school yard where coal waste has been discarded for many decades. The coil seemed to run fairly good. Noticed a few things: Actual ground balance was a little higher (tad over 8) than with my other coils. Increasing the delay didn't change the GB as much as my other coils. It was obvious when the GB balance was off by the increased false audio reports. I could actually run gain to 7, but past that the machine would false in this bad ground. With the stock coil I usually settle with gain of 6. Very good coverage. Felt lighter than the 12" stock coil, but I believe the 12" is a deeper running coil, air test might be in order I could actually pinpoint better (off the front end of the coil) than the stock coils. My holes were noticeably smaller due to better target location. Plenty deep enough, I know some may laugh, but I dug beer beaver tails at 6" in this terrible ground. But I was hunting for gold not coins. Looking forward to my next chance after Nate passes by. No gold jewelry found this time.
  4. Over ten years ago I was pushing pretty hard on the idea that high power pulse induction detectors would eventually find use for more than just nugget detecting. Relic hunters in bad ground seemed a particularly obvious situation where PI detectors could pick up where the VLFs left off. Daniel TN just made a great post over at Dankowski’s about the shift from VLF to PI, and how the PI use progressed up the power ladder from Garrett Infinium to White’s TDI to Minelab GPX. I ended up calling this Steve’s Law Of Target Depletion. The basic premise is that if high value targets exist, people will start with discriminating VLF detectors and dig the easy targets. However, knowing good finds remain, over time more trash is dug and more powerful detectors used. As long as any chance of a good find remains, this progression will ultimately deplete a good location of all targets, good and bad. Prospectors see this all the time. A location will start with trash and gold. VLFs cherry pick out the easy stuff. Then the “dig it all” troops go to work. Sooner or later you get to where just finding a target, any target, gets to be a challenge. Yet as long as a single target remains, good finds still might happen. If nothing else the trash can hide good targets lurking below, and so even trash remaining can be a good sign. You can never call a place detected out until no targets at all remain in the ground that can be found. And even then, a newer, more powerful detector may make the place come to life again, at least for a time.

NO I don't know the guy's name and YES if I find out who it is you can be damn sure I will try and get permission to go detecting with him next time: "My customer, (who would like to remain anonymous) a Southern Oregon Gold Dredger that loves to be out in our mountains all year round. He spends his summer weekends in the water with his dredge. A few years ago, he decided to try his hand at Metal Detecting the ground his has been traipsing over for 25 or 30 years. We discuss his options. He has had an MXT for years, but for Placer Gold it just wasn’t going to avoid the hot rocks and cover the tuff ground that he wants to look in. I sent him out with my demo GMT and my personal TDI SL. Clearly the TDI SL was the right choice for his highly mineralized ground. So the machine was decided. He also wanted the right coil for HIS ground. He works a lot of shallow bedrock, also right on the edge of the creek and up the bank often following bedrock. He decided on the SMALLEST folded mono coil we could find with the elliptical shape. His terrain is tuff, rocks and trees in all the right places / wrong places, depending on if something is found. Fast Forward 2 Years: He has had a very exciting year. Finding the smallest picker first and getting bigger each time. He has purchased a second coil to cover more ground and get the optimal depth. We have also just finished our research for an increased voltage battery for the best performance and longer run time on the bigger coil.   6. Anyone familiar with this coil for the Whites TDI's? I just ordered one from Whites. They have them for sale right now for $35 + shipping so for that price i figured i would try one. If you want one better get it while they last.
  7. In my ongoing Quest for that First Elusive nugget i took the TDI SL with a Miner John 5"x9" coil and went to a local gold producing river today. Sorry to say still No Nugget but i got enough fishing lead to cast a few bullets. Some of these were Really small split shot and bird shot so i know i am doing something right. Just got to find a piece of Yellow stuff to put the coil over.
  8. Gidday guys, i had just bought the new whites tdi sl, i paired it up with the 8" detech coil. These are my first finds with it, i found them within 30 minutes after turning the unit on for the first time. No hot rock found and no ground noise to be heard, first signal to be found was this specie, a nice sweet solid signal, after i moved the litter i scraped away 2 inches to find it, the picture of the larger gold here is what was inside, a 0.61g nugget. Found a few iron target and $2.00, there signals were loud, the iron was very obvious, the coin was a very nice signal, i then found this 0.26g piece, moved the litter and scraped away 4 inches b4 i found it in the hole. The Detech coil runs very quiet and smooth, on this ground, i balanced out at 9 1/2, the gain seemed very happy on 5, all other setting were default. My mate had his gpx4500 running the NF Sadie coil, over the same ground, he was finding all the hot rocks and ground noise, of course he balanced it all out but as he went forward he had to keep balancing out, me, i kept all the tdi settings the same and only ever balanced the once on start up. Its a very quiet and smooth running machine which really impressed my mate with the gpx, i am sorry i dont have a video, i did not prepare myself for the what ifs, next time, i just bought a go pro, so footage of this setup in operation will follow on my next day out. For a budget pi machine under $2000.00 that is a proven gold grabber, i highly recommend this unit with the detech mono.
  9. Hello everybody on the forum, hello Steve! I am a relic and coin hunter in Europe. Among other detectors I have used Minelab pulse machines since 1999, so I have a small arsenal of Coiltek and Detech coils for SD, GP and GPX models. ... and now I have set my mind to owning a White's TDI SL as well. I heard and read that Coiltek and Detech coils for SD, GP and GPX models can also be used on the TDI. Is that true?? I'm looking forward to your answers! Take care and good hunt! Zsolt

  11. A few things I've learned about coal waste hunting. I started inquiring about some old locations I hunt. Most of the locations are old, shut down schools where coal was used as a heating source for decades. Before the EPA was birthed most people did what ever pleased them when it came to disposing of waste, regardless of what it was and these old school sites are no exception. The burnt coal waste was spread over many acres of school property which created some extremely harsh ground conditions. Grass and weeds find it hard to get a start and most areas are void of any vegetation. Most of the school grounds look like Martian landscapes with small BB size or smaller pieces of coal waste everywhere. This material attracts to a magnet with little effort and can reduce depth of all VLF detectors by well over half. In fact until recently maximum detection depth was actually 2-3”. Any target deeper would give a solid iron audio report if any sound at all. After many years of hunting these areas, all but completely unsuccessfully, I finally purchase a White’s TDI SL. It turned out the SL opened up these old sites and many nice coins, relics and gold jewelry were unearthed, but not without many trials and numerous adjustments. Case in point: one particular area had been, in my opinion hunted out with many different VLF machines (ranging in cost from $250 - $2000) over a 10 year period and I was certain there were no good targets left. Now I’m going to fast forward 2 years of hunting experience and mention a couple very important and rewarding hunting trips that might help someone. Settings: sensitivity 6, ground balance 7 ½, pulse delay 10 and conductivity set to high and used the stock 12” dual field coil First was an old school site where both coal waste and nails are very abundant. I had been hunting about 15 minutes and all the SL was giving were very short audio reports, which sounded more like chatter or EMI and not targets. This prompted me to increase the time delay to about 15 , which increases the time before a transmitted signal is analyzed, thinking the small pieces of coal waste were the short reports (partial masking) I was hearing. Continued hunting another 5 minutes and noticed the short audio chatter continued but not to the same magnitude. Stopping and increased the delay to around 17 and off I went hunting again. Suddenly I noticed the machine was running very quiet, to quiet. A minute or two later and a very loud low tone, which on the SL means a high conductor, I stopped and reduced the delay to 10 and found my definite answer. The coal waste was causing the ground chatter and false audio reports. Increased the delay back to 17 and recovered a wheat penny around 4” deep. Now to be honest I had to stop for a moment and think about what just happened. Decided to start over I returned to where I began hunting and discovered I had passed right over many good targets. After digging a few more wheat pennies and a silver dime I decided to start checking these targets before digging and discovered if I decreased the delay most of these targets became the short sounding audio reports I had heard earlier. The PI was just the trick to discovering some nice coins deeper than 4” in these barren areas. From this site I learned the time delay helps with eliminating small metallic pieces from interfering with coins and other relics. I must admit, at times, I tend to over think some of my hunting trips but the thought came to mind. What if there was gold jewelry in the area where I was hunting coins (conductivity high)? Yes I could have been hunting with a setting of all but the area is so polluted with targets I chose only high. So another trip to the same site with only two setting changes pulse delay 15 and conductivity set to low. In addition to this I change, I opted for the smaller 7 /12” dual field coil. Again the delay settings helped with the coal waste problem mentioned above and allowed me to hunt with a little sanity. Less than 15 minutes later came my first ring, not gold but gold plated, but that helped motivate me to keep going. Dug a couple beer pull tabs and finally a nice gold class ring came to light.   12. White's quietly instituted a summer sale (ends in August) that resulted in some steep price drops for some models. The TDI SL was dropped from MSRP $1299.95 to $1099.95 which in turn created a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) of only $989. As ground balancing PI (GBPI) detectors go the TDI SL is no powerhouse, but this price reduction puts it firmly in VLF country as far as the hit it will put on your pocketbook. If you have a VLF and places it refuses to work due to intense ground and hot rocks, this presents an affordable potential solution.
  13. Has anyone used them on their TDI and if so, how do they do on Gold? Especially interested in the larger coils like the 12"x15" mono for the GPX. Will it work on the TDI ? Would it be a good choice for covering a lot of ground prospecting for nuggets and will it find the smaller ones still? Would it be any better than the stock 12" dual field? Any experiences and help appreciated.

  16. I recently added a PI unit to my weapons hoping to get further depth on caches of buried cans and bottles at 3 feet and deeper. I am mostly using the detector only to find the deeply buried pits of ferrous cans/ "trash". I know there is a learning curve to all new equipment but am throwing out some questions here for those who have used the White's SPP. First thing I notice is the detector is very sensitive especially to shallow scatter like concentrations of scattered nails and wire, especially wire in coils or even hangers bent in round loops sound like a much better target. I have read that adding a much larger coil like an SEF style in 20x17 format will eliminate some of the "noise" of semi surface items as well as add a bit of depth. My question is having the SPP without the Pulse Delay setting am I going to have a problem running these coils? I had read elsewhere that guys turn up the Delay setting when using the larger coil and the SPP does not have this ability. My first time out experimenting on finding a large deep target of cans I knew existed I ran the coil that came with the unit and in range on controls suggested in thres and gain. I picked up a number of small sharp high tone signals and dug them just for experience. I came up with bottle caps, loose change, a 2 dollar Mexican coin and a nice men's gold band. But these are not the type of targets I seek and would rather hear the deeper low tones that suggest concentrations of deeper buried metallic objects (trash). I was able to easily find the pit of old cans that were about 3 1/2 feet down but noticed it was very hard to pinpoint the signal and it seemed to overload or max out the detector signal. When switching to OFF on GB and running in an non motion mode I did well but experienced the same overload type effect on deep concentration target. When I turned the GAIN down some it helped with average targets of say 6 pack of cans at 2 foot, but I lost the ability to pick up the deep target. I know I am looking to use machine in ways most are trying to avoid in digging "trash" but just looking for any suggestions on coils and settings that may help with my learning curve. THANKS!
  17. Recent discovery of the conductivity switch on my White's TDI SL. The video shows what I've found. It also works the same with the 7 1/2" dual field coil. Just the opposite happens if you run the machine with the conductivity switch to high, low conductors are also heard. These results are the same as in ground targets to about 4" deep. More information to follow......
  18. Revisited the bad lands today. This time settings were a little different. Still a lot of nails in this area, but this time I opted to hear only low conductors and it paid off. One 10k GF and a nice 10k class ring. And of course the double handfuls of beer tabs, beaver tails and pencil erasers. All in all a pretty good hunt. Todays settings were: gain 6 GB 6 delay 18 low conductors

Not trying to clog up the forum with ebay item(s), but this looks like a hard-to-find item someone here might want: ebay.com/itm/18-Cannon-Coil-For-Whites-TDI-Metal-Detector-/2 Never seen one of these myself and have never heard of this company (if 'Cannon' is actually a company name -- maybe it's not). Says 17 microsecond or longer delay is recommended, which takes it out of my wheelhouse since my TDI/SPP is locked at 10 us.

After Reading many post about the TDI SL The Topics always Returned to the Issue about Batteries so I thought I would Buy A Few Dozen Batteries and put it to the Tests Because I think that most people are Holding Back or putting off buying a really Good Machine based on the Issue of the Batteries, So I am posting this in order to let people see that The problem is easily solved and is A lot Cheaper than you might think, HH I have done Tests with Batteries here's what I Got, 1) The Standard HD 2200mah NiMh Pack 4 hours 20 minutes 2) The Dry Cell Pack Fitted with 8 X 2650 mah NiMh AAs =(11.63 volts) 6 hours 37 minutes 3) Modified Dry Cell Pack to Fit 9 x 2700 mah NiMh AAs =(13.009 volts) 6 hours 38 minutes NOW IF YOU USE:- Righto If you use 2900 mah NiMh Batteries you should get Around 7 and A half to 8 Hours Run time, which is more than enough with out Taking A Break, So My Advise to All You Fellow TDI SL Brothers and Sisters, Is To Use the Dry Cell Pack with either 2650s, 2700s or 2900s As Your Main Pack and use your Standard HD 2200 Factory Pack As Your Backup, Using the 2650s and the 2700s works out 4 X Cheaper than Buying the RNB Pack. NOW YOU:- Now You might of noticed that I Modified the Dry Cell Pack To Except 9 X AA's, Why you might Ask??, Well many People have Claimed that By Increasing the Input Voltage That you would Get More Depth?? Well It Did To A Degree But it helps the Sensitivity more than depth because it is running at A Peak Voltage, Is it worth the $10.00s to buy an extra Battery and the Single Battery Holder, Maybe?? But for ease of Use I am Going back to using 8 X 2700+ Batteries, Although I was Running A Higher Voltage It did Not Give me more Run Time as I expected, Because when you increase the Input Voltage that has A Down Side, Because The TDIs will Consume more Amperage as with all things Do although that 13.00 volts does give you a Happy feeling Inside, If you are going to Carry Disposable Batteries then Only Use Energizer Lithium's as they have A Much higher Voltage than Duracell's and Normal Energizers at 1.61 Volts, Where AS The Energizer Lithium's Have 1.83 volts which @ 8 X 1.83 = 14.64 Volts, DON'T PANIC Because the TDI SL Can Run 16.00 Volts Safely, OK, NOW These Energizer Lithium's Have A 10 Year Shelf Life, and have Working Temperature of -40*c to + 40*c++, and they are the only Battery that Is Guaranteed Not To Leak, So If you Own ANYTHING of Value to YOU Only Use these Batteries In It and Even more So with your Detectors because The High Voltage Makes the Machine A Bit Deeper and A Little More Sensitive and A Longer Run Time than Normal Energizers or Duracell, Please Note That Duracell's work Better than the Normal Energizers because Duracell's power slowly goes down, Where as Normal Energizers stay Bright and then the Voltage suddenly drops Fast and if you are using them in a flash light/Torch Then Don't Be Surprized if you find your self in the Dark, Anyways I hope this Helps, John,
  22. Hello all,I'm a longtime lurker first post. I prospect mainly in the Mohave Mountains behind LHC AZ. I'm currently using a F19 and am somewhat successful on the shallow small stuff. I'm going to upgrade from or compliment to my F19 with a PI. My budget is around 1k. I have a chance to pick up a gently used sd2200 for $800. I can't help wonder if I'm better off with that or a TDI sl. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I followed all the coin settings per Steve and others on the Internet ( high conductivity ,GB on 4 then 1.5, gain max, 10 s,) and she still sings on nails and everything else , I was getting signals on almost every swing, it was not silencing any iron like the videos by the southern fella, I am just going for coins where I have already hit with the mxt. Help please

Hey Guys, just a short video from a few weeks ago, in the video I quickly sweep over an area to clean off the surface targets so I can work the area later with the GMT, good example of using two cheaper gold detectors to your advantage. oh' don't watch it if your sensitive to swearing or dogs feeding themselfs.
