  1. The dangerous world of illegal mining in South Africa Every day they go to work, they have no idea whether they will return home alive. Poverty forces them beneath the earth to search for gold. Some will be arrested for illegal mining. Some will die. BBC Africa Eye meets the migrants who risk everything to go deep underground in South Africa’s dangerous disused gold mines to make a living. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-africa-61609559 If you go to the BBC website there is a 9 minute video, it's worth the watch.
  2. Does anyone here prospect in Africa? (Do they have internet?) I know prospectors who have gone to Africa and prospected and taught but is anyone on this forum there? We never seem to know what is going on there with metal detecting. One of the reasons I ask is that with the release of the new Minelab GPX 6000 it has been stated that this detector was released to Africa months ago. What is the difference? Wasn't the Gold Monster designed originally for the African market? We look at sales for Minelab and Africa is their biggest market. Why do I never see many pictures or read any stories?
  3. Hello all, I'm doing a small study of metal detectors in Africa. How do you refer to gold detectors in your local language? What does the name mean?
  4. Here's the follow-up of the BBC story on the South African 'diamond' rush.. unlike the many fools who got suckered in by historical gold rushes, I do feel sorry for these folk.. As a way out of poverty the stakes would have been very high.. now, the future has been dashed.. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-57548406
  5. I know it's not a gold rush but it is the next best thing.. this video report caught my interest this morning: https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-africa-57483877
  6. I stumbled across this article while trying to find data on how high the prices of T2’s and GPX’s got during the big African gold detector rush of the period around 2010. Pretty fascinating stuff if you can digest some “high falutin’“ anthropological jargon. She also published a book on the subject - 2nd link. https://www.worldcat.org/title/who-knows-tomorrow-uncertainty-in-north-eastern-sudan/oclc/1020656228
  7. I'm still looking for a detector that can easily sort through pulltabs, foil, and bottlecaps without paying an arm and a leg. It's became painfully obvious I need a small coil to reach in between the bad for the good items, if any. I DO prefer detectors with Target ID however I'm not against looking at detectors without target ID, IF they have good discrimination. That is the whole topic of this, a detector that has very good discrimination but will still grab the goodies. I already have an XP ORX, and the thing I find with it is the coil is too large for this type of hunting. It's a good detector, and I still manage to find coins with it, however it is rough to hunt with in trashy parks and school areas. I'm NOT against a Tesoro, even though it seems they have gone kaput. One I am looking at is the Tesoro Outlaw. Has 3 coils with it, no need to go out and pay even more money for extra coils with that one because they are already included. So here is the checklist of what I'm seeking: 1) Good in trash 2) Allows you to get close to the bleachers, metal park benches, tot lot items. 3)waterproof coils 4)Nothing too heavy. 5) Less than $600.00 What I don't want: 1) A detector that is no good in trashy sites. 2) An Equinox recommendation(already been there and done that) I appreciate your feedback and insights.
  8. Wow! jus found this tonite....from "Open Pit" Enjoy! ☺️ Ig http://www.geologyin.com/2018/11/5655-carat-emerald-with-golden-green.html
  9. For those of you who become introspective on New Years Eve I have something for you.And it's free! It's a collection of brand new, never used new years resolutions that I have left over from past years. Here is just a small sample; I resolve to: 1. Learn to use all of the functions on my GPZ 7000. 2. Figure out how to post photos on this forum. 3. Not do anything dangerous or foolish while out prospecting. 4. Never gloat over finding more nuggets than Sourdough Scott. So I'll leave this with my "Prospectors Blessing" for all of you; "May the coming year be the best yet but not the best ever"
  10. Upon looking up the new meteor impact that just happened yesterday in South Africa, I came across this article. I guess its confirmed Pyrite, and not gold.... Dave
  11. Hi everyone , I am new here , I joined this forum hoping to find some tips and guidance on gold hunting because I am really confused , frustrated with so many information and resource on the net , and I dont know from where to start on how can i be a really a gold hunter . Background : My Journey with gold hunting started in 2010 , when I heard from a close friend of mine that there are gold in sudan ( I am from Yemen by the way ) so I decided to give a try , so I bought GPX 4500 at that time it was famous gold detector device + I bought the big circle coil to give me more detecting depth . Why I went for this trip : 1st : Get Rich , 2nd to having fun and go on an adventure . 6 months past , we were expecting to find 1 kg gold at least to cover at least our expenses on this trip , but we found 180 Grams in total , it seemed like we were out of luck may be because we just rushed things up without guard our self with knowledge about gold prospect , we just used the experience of people who went on this trip before and good guy who program the device for us . And that is how round 1 ends in 2010 . What kind of advice I am seeking from you guys , I am looking for that advice which comes from experience : I am going back for round 2 in 2018 , I have my old GPX-4500 device unsold and before going to Sudan again I need to start fresh this time I needed to gain some knowledge on areas such as: 1- What book / blogs should I read to start my gold hunting education ? 2- Should I sell my old device and buy another one ? 3-How to tell if the device find gold from the the sound it produce how to tell the differences ( talking about GPX 4500 ) , this question is connected to Q Number 2 ... I hared that low sound means gold , high means steel .. I have experienced this myself before , but I think it is just 60% true , I am not sure though , need your input on this . 4-How to tell if one area has gold ( with 10 - 20 % chance at least ) and it is worth the time to spend on searching , geologically before going for search ? Do I really need the help of Google earth to scan the place ? 5-Is it true that only places where people find gold is the best place to find gold , what about exploring new area ( this question connected to question number 4 ) . 6-Is it true that long range gold detector are fake ? Please see this link for more information : http://raregoldnuggets.com/?p=5095 7-When gold detector will fail to find gold ? 8-Do advice me to try looking for gold in the Nile ? Thank you for reading my post and I am looking forward to hear from you . Khaled

  15. Hey guys! Firstly, wanted to say hi and what a pleasure it is to meet you all. What a great forum with so much valuable info! Keep it up. I'm in Zimbabwe and want to start detecting for gold in areas that I believe are fertile. Unfortunately I don't have the capital for a GPZ 7000 or similar and as I'm starting out not wanting to invest alot at the beginning, I wanted your guys advice as to the best most affordable detector to go with - can be Minelab or any other brand. As things progress (hopefully) I will upgrade. Thanks again and I look forward to all your thoughts and opinions.
  16. Hello team im new on this platform so forgive me if my question is out of place. is it advisable to puchase a second hand gold detector? im saying this because where i come from there is only one dealer of new metal detectors and its very expensive maybe thrice the price that you see on the internet. most websites i have visited they dont ship to my country (Zimbabwe).
  17. Notice how many guys in the back row with picks! Mike Scott of Fisher in Bukina Faso meeting with the customers who buy most of their gold detectors. These are the customers First Texas' upcoming PI detector are aimed at and you can be sure it won't cost $7000 or $8000 and won't use a Lithium ion battery unless it comes with a solar charger.
  18. I recently started a facebook page. It's set up now, but I will be working on it over the coming days to get things looking a bit nicer. I want to get it set up so that when I go to Africa in a couple weeks, Once I depart, I will share a kind of a daily diary of my experiences traveling with photos on the site. I will be returning to Burkina Faso, perhaps Ghana and maybe some others. We'll be out in the gold fields teaching Africans the skills of finding gold with a metal detector. I went there last May and it was quite the adventure and I honestly saw things like I had never seen before. It was also strange to be in a country where French is the language of the people. - I took French in High School, and believe it or not some of it came back to me after all those many years. So if you'd like to come along to Africa and share in the adventure vicariously, take a look at my facebook page, and be sure to like it, then check back to see the updates as I travel off halfway across the globe. My facebook page is at: www.facebook.com/nevadaoutback If you are a member of facebook, you will get updates in your news feed when I post my feed. We will be using products by First Texas - The Teknetics T2 and Gold Bug detectors are very popular all over Africa and do a great job of finding the gold.
  19. I found this quite interesting and well done. This video report features interviews with Minelab and a number of customers from Burkina Faso. It was filmed in Burkina Faso and Dubai. It also tells the stories of a number of customers and how their success has changed their lives. One prospector, Solomon, struck it rich affording him the opportunity to purchase three plots of land, 3 motorbikes and 3 more detectors. Most importantly he can now afford to send all ten of his children to school.
