Is this thread locked?

I've just read every post and almost every word over the last 3 days.  I wasn't aware of it for almost a year!  The forum was crashing and I was in or coming back from New Zealand and lost track of it.  I had no comments until now.

I bought one of Steve's rods based upon comments from other threads.  I didn't understand the 'technical' reasons why the new shaft was being offered but I just had a feeling something could be better with my Manticore I bought from Gerry in June 2024.  I used it long enough on my beaches before I got the new shaft to feel and hear that it is better than the original.  Somewhere I posted in my review of the shaft that it no longer seemed like some of the responses of the detector sounded like it was close to overloading.  After this thread I see why.

My two takeaways are eddy currents have a big effect.  Just a feeling but also a clue in operation.

The second takeaway is the lack of problem with the coil wire.  It was mentioned that it was not solid like the shafts and becomes more invisible to the hardware/software.  This to me and others is a reason why fine chains are difficult to find.  The dispersed response becomes part of the background noise.  It might 'track out' if you don't dig everything like I do on the beach.

Lastly, Goldfield is the name of the gold program on the Manticore.

    Hey there MN,

I was just curious on which size coil you bought it to use on; one or all? Or had overloading issues with? I didn't reread recently (but maybe I should) but as I recall, it was more of a problem on the smaller coils, like the M8 and M9! On the M11 and M15, it apparently wasn't an issue, but I never really tested that for myself, and bought one last year; on advice of the forum friends, for use on the two smaller coils! I'm still running the stock shafts on the bigger two! Possible I missed some important bit of information on this, and other posts, as my attention span was never that great anyway!😆🍀👍👍

It's a problem on the M11 and M15 for me, at least in gold modes it's highly reactive, in coin modes it reacts but not as badly as this

Thanks Simon!👍 As always, your "Johnny on the spot" for information! Now, I will just have to focus🫣, and test!🍀👍👍

I've since thrown my carbon lower shaft out so I can't cause this problem anymore 🙂

I don't throw out anything; ask my wife!🙄 Guess I'll have find a way to repurpose them somewhere in the house or yard!🎏🥁😁

It's possible I haven't had, or noticed, the same issue, as I've only run the Manticore at the beaches, in "Beach low Conductor" and "Surf and Seawater" modes! Been way too hot to experiment much this year, but that will change soon, hopefully!

So, unlike a few of my oldies in my detector collection, with the aluminum shaft, and stainless steel coil bolts, I guess modern; very sensitive coils, don't do well at nullifying anything conducive that they are mounted too, other than the coil wire!🤔🍀👍👍

yep, it gets very little response from the coil wire.

I'm in a way wishing I kept it, as the 18" Coiltek has a bit of an odd coil rubber situation so it's best left on a shaft or the rubbers will get lost.  I'm going to have to sort something out there, probably another SteveG fiberglass shaft, I need one for my 6000 anyway so will get them at the same time.

Joe,

I'm like you on the attention span thing but I have to get better to teach my kids!

I bought the Manti with the M11 and M8.  I wondered why I waited for over a year after it was out.  Later when Minelab had a deal on the M15 I bought one of those.  I've used all of them on the beach.  I noticed the 'overloading' sounds when I would lay the detector down to dig.  It just sounded strained.  After I got the SteveG shaft that sound went away for the most part.  Recently I brought a nugget scoop with me to sand playgrounds and the beach.  I was noticing some of the same symptoms and realized that I had the rods at the wrong length.  Now I have the SteveG rod at maximum length and the other carbon pieces shorter.  The lower rod goes all the way past the edge of the M15 if you know what I mean.  The M11 is just a more fun coil to swing with the Manti.  If I go slow and listen for the deep grunts it will perform nearly as well as the 15.

Lately I've been having fun with Goldfield Mode and the M15 in the sandlots and dry sand at the beach.  It just runs a bit different and I turn down the sensitivity.  That won't work on the wet, salt water.  I'm sure this 'practice' will make me better when I go to the desert for nuggets.
