I wasn't following Steve's instructions properly, he wanted the entire palm of the hand over the coil, not just fingers touching it, normally on most gold prospecting VLF's finger tips are enough, not on the Deus 1, it requires the entire hand.  It's also less sensitive to small targets though with the #9 pellet almost needing to touch the coil when other detectors can get a couple of inches on it.

So that ladies and gentlemen is why we need to follow instructions 🙂

Yeah entire palm flat on bottom of coil is best. Actually happy to see that as did not make sense.

I was detecting a lake nearby and found an old shaft from a trolling motor with the detector. I did not connect it to the shaft being conductive at the time, but it makes a lot of sense now. I was in 3 feet of water near the shore looking for items that people lost while fishing,and  never found anything else in that area.

Thanks for sharing this info with me so that I can understand the 800 even better. I was using field 2 with the sense up to 20 at the time. That works great on the lakes near me.

I never paid these conductive rod threads much more than passing interest but I just picked up a 7” Mars coil for my TimeRangerPro (BountyHunter branded F19, Goldbug, etc) and low and behold it will see my hand even in discriminate mode. The large factory coil won’t and I don’t remember noticing it with the 5x10 on the F19 I used to have, but that’s been quite a few years. I think this coil might up my micro jewelry game!! It definitely made me aware that I need to check/test micro targets without my hand 🤯

I just checked my F19 with Nel Snake coil, and it indeed easily picks up my hand.

I bet that 7" Mars coils a nice tough beast.   You'll no doubt love it.
