ChuckScrivener
As chance would have it I have recently received two new in box detectors through unrelated trades. A Garrett 24k goldmaster and a Minelab Gold Monster 1000. I would normally just take them both out and use them to see what I like best as my VLF machine but since they are both new in the box I don't want to hurt their potential value. I'm stuck considering keeping one of them or perhaps trading in both to get a Nox 900. Not sure if they could snag me one together though. Points to consider that are important to me are 1: I primarily prospect for gold but do like to coin and relic hunt when I come across old 49er cabins. Would ultimately like a Manticore but a Nox would be good if I could trade these in and come out even without having to spend more. 2. If I can't find a sale or trade that allows me to get a NOX 900 without spending more I would want to just keep one of these detectors and sell the other. 3. I don't mind extra setting like the 24k has so if it's better on gold and trash than the monster than I'm ok with that. In other words I want performance over ease of use. I have experience with the NOX and Monster but never the 24k. I know this forum has some knowledgable folks so I appreciate any experience you wish to share. I suppose the variable is what I could get for these unused detectors because I imagine the NOX is what I really want as it can fulfill my protecting needs and relic/coin desires. Thanks Chuck As far as sensitivity to small nuggets its really hard to give an edge to either the Garrett 24K or the Gold Monster (GM1000) they both hit on very small non ferrous targets, if I were to chose one over the other for sensitivity on small nuggets it would be the 24K simply because the GM1000 runs 45KHz and the 24K runs at 48KHz When I had my GM1000 there were things I absolutely could not stand about the GM1000 #1 being every time you sat the GM1000 down to retrieve a target the stupid thing fell over because of how top heavy the GM1000 was, #2 was having to constantly stay on the Ground Balance of the GM1000 and yes even though the GM1000 is a automatic everything detector you have to ground balance the GM1000 constantly, #3 was that silent search feature no threshold I just could not get use to that, the other thing was the lack of variety of coils for the GM1000, I ended up selling my GM1000 and purchasing the Garrett GM 24K and have no regrets in doing so. I have not found one thing that I can complain about with the 24K, and if I did have a complaint it would be the S Shaft for the 24K and I really cannot complain about the shaft system other than I prefer a straight shaft on detectors (I might have different thoughts on that last one if I hunted in water) I just prefer a straight shaft over a S Shaft and that personal preference The 24K has two more coils that can be ran on it also, although two of those coils are extremely hard to almost impossible to find for sale, I was fortunate when I purchased my 24K in the fact I was actually able to Acquire all four coils for use on my 24K, I love everything about the Garrett 24K, and as I stated I have no regrets in selling the GM1000 and switching over to the Garrett 24K 10 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277713 Share on other sites
Popular Post tboykin
Hey Chuck, I designed and developed the GM24k when I worked at White's. Having said that, my pick would definitely be the Nox, due to versatility. I just have the ancient EQ800 but it has found me a lot of gold, as well as coins, jewelry, and mountains of trash. I would suspect the EQ900 is at least 100 better than my EQ800. The numbers have to mean something, right? I like having both a high powered PI and a VLF to use when looking for gold. And the VLF gets to play in parks, at the beach, and on relic hunts too. Less machines but each one does more. 9 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277732 Share on other sites

The 24K is one detector you should be really proud of as I stated I love the 24K, I was really sad when Whites went out of bushiness because I was putting the money together at that time, to purchase the Whites 24K when I finally got the funds together to purchase the Whites 24K, i then could not find one for sale, and then was really happy when Garrett picked up the Whites Patents and continued on producing the 24K when that happened I decided to sale my GM1000 and pick up the Garrett/Whites 24K its a keeper for me, the 24K also does not do to shabby as a coin and jewelry detector either, would it be my first choice as a coin and jewelry detector no but I have experimented with it just to see how the 24K would fare as a coin detector and it actually did OK 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277740 Share on other sites
Ridge Runner
Now if you really wanted to go cheap and have a gold detector plus coin hunt with it then go buy a Gold Bug Pro for 239.00 . That’s what you can buy one now with free shipping. It comes with the 6” coil at that price. Chris Ralph makes some great videos on it and the GM 1000. I’m not sure but I think on Garrett’s 24K. Another who makes a great video on the GM 1000 is Bill Southern. Watching different videos may help you in what is best for you. ChuckScrivener
Thank you all for those replies. I have been watching some of the videos. This forum really is the best for getting folks with knowledge and experience to engage with in helpful ways. I think I will try and see what I can get for these machines and perhaps put that towards a NOX. If they can’t bring enough I’ll probably keep the 24k based off what I’ve seen and read and the points brought out above. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277773 Share on other sites
GB_Amateur
(Maybe this question has been answered previously in other threads.) For native gold detecting, has it been shown that the Eqx 900 is better than the 800? There should be good deals on used 800's, not the least reason being the Manticore. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277776 Share on other sites
Jeff McClendon
My 900 was better for gold prospecting than my 800, for ground handling, sensitivity, depth and EMI mitigation. I would pick the Nox 900 or even the Nokta Legend over the Goldmonster 1000 and the 24K. The 900 and Legend using their simultaneous multi frequency modes are just better at ground handling and target ID accuracy even on smaller gold than the GM 1000 and the 24K from my experience owning and using all four. Nox 900 and Legend are waterproof, have wireless audio and are way more versatile for lots of other detecting than the 1000 and 24K. If I could only have one dedicated gold prospecting VLF single frequency detector and there were no SMF "do it all" detectors available right now, there is nothing out there better than the Garrett/Whites Goldmaster 24K I would rather have a Manticore over all of them. 7 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277788 Share on other sites
runningnorth
Chuck, I've owned both the GM1000 and 24k and here is what I've learned from using both side-by-side: the GM is overall more sensitive to all sizes and types of native gold(by a very small margin) and can handle a bit more ground mineralization(red oxide and magnetic ground). Both are excellent IB detectors, with the nod going slightly to the GM on performance, but a huge, huge difference on construction toughness, with clear advantage going to the GM. The 24k is the least rugged detector of the two from a durability perspective, and I sold mine because of this. I've taken my GM to some of the most dangerous and rugged places you could imagine, and it is truly the toughest detector I've ever owned in my 40 years of detecting. It survived a 50ft. drop from a sheer cliff during one of my mis-adventures in the Santa Rita Mountains of Arizona in 2022. That's really tough! No way the 24k could handle such a drop onto the solid rocks below. Another thing I don't like is the battery compartment of the 24k - it has a snap - in mechanism that IMO will not hold up over time. As for using either for coins I cannot comment(I have several dedicated detectors for hunting coins), except I can say both the Nox's cannot perform as well on gold nuggets as the GM and 24k. The Nox gold program is decently good, but it is simply not as effective at sniffing out the tiny gold in difficult ground. Another gold detector worth considering is the Nokta AU Finder(analog version). I think these were discontinued, but minty used ones can be had on eBay for about $400, which is a steal. The AU Finder has many tuning options not available on the GM, which makes it more versatile for multi-purpose usage. As of now, my #1 choice is the GM, and my #2 is the Nokta(I own 2 AU Finders). Both are rugged and dependable and are extremely well designed for the job of finding gold... 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26274-opinions-on-garrett-goldmaster-24k-vs-monster-1000-or-both-versus-a-nox-900/#findComment-277859 Share on other sites
