I just received this email,  Is this a safe sort of thing to clean silver coins with without damaging them? If so, pretty cool.  I've often considered a very soft toothbrush but didn't want to cause damage so I just take them home and rinse them under water and that's all I've done in the past.

A NEW Accessory🚨

I would not brush a Silver coin.  Gentle wet clean or they will scratch.

Nice brush though.

I got that e-mail & thought sure can't cost that much to try, clicked on the buy it now button, Well it was 6.99 but unless you purchased $100.00 for free shipping you had to pay shipping & the cheapest option was fed-x at $27.78. So guess I'll pass for now LOL

just went back in & added 2 & an option for 10.75 Fedx ground for shipping so I went ahead.

I've used gun brushes a lot, mostly the softest one. Now I spray all my coins and buttons with a water bottle first, but pretty much always did that with coins.

Looks nice tho.20240508_075337.thumb.jpg.2ed2ae8b18063922e27b2b4d58b7646c.jpg

That brush looks great for scrubbing toasted Large Cents and buttons, but I would not use it on silver. By the way, what is the "button" on the handle end for? In the field, it is so tempting to clear dirt from silver coins. Spraying the silver coin with water is the way to proceed without still rubbing it to see what you have. If it is Fine condition or better, I'd wait until I'm home to clean further. If the silver is blackened from sustained ground moisture, I use wet baking soda and rub lightly between my fingers to brighten up the high spots. It will not scratch the coin. If you have a rare date and mint, I would not clean further beyond water. I would consider an ultrasonic clear with just water (no chemicals) to remove dirt from crevices. I've rubbed way too many silver coins in the field encrusted with dirt to find them finely scratched afterward. Below is a coin I found in the early 80's. When I first dug it up it was worth about $60, today it is worth about 5 times that. The ground alone puts enough scratches on the coin. This coin was dug with mint luster and it grades EF+. Be careful how you pinpoint and dig!
