The Seeker
I had an SL a few years back and regretted selling it so I bought another. The detector came with two mono coils. My question is what would be the best coil to run at beach with lots of black sand? Thanks for any and all the help. HH

excaliburgold
Gerry from Idaho would probably have a recommendation for you since he has 40 years of experience using and selling detectors. Gerry, what say you?

Which is better for what I want to hunt, Mono or DD coils? Thanks The TDI BeachHunter (you can also read up on other TDI models there) is effectively a waterproof TDI SL. It comes with the 12" dual field mono hardwired. But as you likely know, there are many other compatible coils made both by White's but also by other manufacturers, so hopefully others here with experience on your specific detecting environment (heavy black sand beach) will chime in.
Steve Herschbach
The TDI and the Eric Foster Goldscan it is based on were designed to use mono coils. DD coils offer no real advantage on the TDI. The pulse delay is your main tool after the ground balance for dealing with the worst ground. Always readjust the ground balance after changing the pulse delay as they are interrelated. For beach use it is also very important to experiment with ground balance off as this can add depth, especially on targets that happen to fall into the ground balance hole.

Thank you for chiming in and spreading some good knowledge as always. I had no idea about the mono coils being best for the TDI. Time for me to modify the battery pack with some 18650’s and go clean the gold from the beaches. Thank you Steve.
Compass
I just saw this post so sorry for the delayed response. I use a TDI Beach Hunter and it works very well in the black sand with its stock coil, a dual field mono according to the above post by GBA. I usually run with Ground Balance "off" and tune out the black sand with the "gain" and "pulse delay" settings. If the targets are plentiful the detector can be set-up with the ground balance "on" to separate high and low conductors and the detector excels, even in thick black sand.
