Hi all -

Got my first detector about 10-ish years ago - a Tesoro Vaquero - and had a LOT of fun, and love it, though never any amazing finds. Most just a summer/beach trip thing. We live in New Jersey.

Fast forward... just got a Legend Pro kit for my birthday, and... have some homework to do 🙂

It's been raining a lot here, and based on all the capabilities of the new detector, I'm really not sure which settings to consider/test for the "best" / clearest signals, or if it even needs to be adjusted. Like other things, I looked it up and found conflicting info (rain is good / rain is bad) and other things, but nothing specific to this detector.

So, any thoughts appreciated.

Bonus question: For the 16 custom slots, can we save whatever we want in each?

TIA

Welcome to the forum!

If you are just doing saltwater beach hunting, the Beach multi dry and multi wet settings are fine for most beach detecting. Run multi dry as long as you can and switch to multi wet when multi dry gets too noisy from the salt levels getting higher close to the surf.

For land, Park M1, M2 and M3 are great. M3 might be good for you on really wet ground but try M1 first. Keep sensitivity around 20 to start off, noise cancel, ground balance and use the number of tones that you can handle. Many people lower the iron filter setting from default 8 to much lower depending on ground conditions. Keep recovery speed on default  5 in the beginning. Changing the discrimination pattern from A (all targets accepted) to G (ground signals rejected) to F (iron signals rejected) to C (custom) is a simple button push.

You can have some fun with the Ferro Check meter on steel bottle caps, nails and non ferrous targets. Practice with targets that you want to find when you aren't hunting. Learn how to pinpoint with the Legend's onboard pinpointer. It will wear out your thumb!

The Legend user interface forces you to jump right in to learning how to navigate it. We all had to do it. Some got use to it and some didn't. It's basically seamless for me now but it wasn't on day 1 or day 30 and then Nokta does a software update and I relearn it.....or not.

There are 4 user profiles. Profiles 1, 2, 3, and 4, can each have a custom program saved in them for Park, Field, Beach and Prospecting. So you can save 4 Park programs, 4 Field programs etc. Once you set them up they will be remembered when powered down and back up until you decide to change them.

The Legend will remember your last settings when you power down and back up even if you don't save them in a user profile during the beginning when you are learning how it works..

Keep asking questions.

  • The title was changed to Introduction And Question About The Legend

I sent a private message to bedrocker just to make sure I hadn't written something that was confusing. He wrote me back with information that I hear all too often when it comes to detectors like the Legend and the Equinox series.

There are a ton of settings on these detectors and the Legend definitely wins the prize for some of the hardest to get to and adjust. The Legend manual is pretty good but it is translated from Turkish.

These detectors can do it all. That makes them a lot of fun when they just happen to have presets that match a person's ground conditions and targets for their area. If those presets don't match up well..............

That's where a forum like this or one on one, old fashioned in person help can really make a difference in whether your Legend is ever going to get turned on or not.

@Jeff McClendon Thanks for the notes! I definitely have a bit of homework to do, but actually I think the setups seem pretty straightforward. FWIW, among other things I work on are technical documents, and they did a pretty good job on the manual.

So, it's been raining every day since I got this thing on... whatever day it was...

Went out for my first tryout at a local park today at lunch, and did ok for the 45 minutes or so I was there. To date, I've only used a hand shovel and done most of my hunting in sand. I definitely need a bigger shovel... 🙂

Pinpointer is great.

Takeaways from today: At this park, in these conditions,
50 = Quarter
45 = Penny
43/44 = Aluminum can
40 to 60 to 50 to 35 to 49 to 34 = Pull tab (lol what?!?)

I found seven coins just wandering around. Looks like they've been in the ground a while... Everything except one penny are from the 1970s. They were all at least 4" deep. I don't think anyone has been hunting here in a long time.

Both quarters clearly rang as a solid 50, and all 5 pennies as solid 45s.

Just wanted to check it out quickly... Next time I'll experiment a bit & dig lower numbers. It's raining again. Looking forward to getting back out there.

Your hunt was great. US clad dimes can also have IDs like copper penny. Zinc pennies can have a wide ID spread depending on what condition they are in from 36 to 44 and they can be even higher if they are deep.

I think I have found 17 different kinds of modern pull tabs so far. They can have target IDs on the Legend from 20 to 45 or so. If you hunt near a tennis court, those huge pull tabs off of tennis ball containers can ID like a quarter sometimes. So can larger flattened aluminum screw caps. Steel crown beer bottle caps can be all over the place too depending on their condition. But the fresher ones will bounce between 1 and 50 or so with a big change in the audio and the Ferro Check meter even if you have your iron filter set low and bottle cap reject on 0.

Thanks for the kind words. I went back over for 45 minutes or so & got 7 more coins, all buried around 4-6", and all in the same-ish area. I got two dimes this time, too. I'm feeling more and more certain this park hasn't been hunted in a long time.

Earlier in the day I went to a sports field & mainly found trash (aluminum cans) which were deeper but hit between 45-50.

Going back over this morning to the 1st location (coin farm!) to hunt around on (relatively) default settings again, and after a few more trips will start taking notes & making adjustments.

I'm also reading through the manual more carefully now & having a fun time relating my experience to the content; one that stands out that I missed the first time was using M3 for wet ground; I'll try this out today. I'm actually highlighting the manual and will be creating a few cheat sheets.

Looks like I know who to ask a question to if I have any with my Legend!  Great info Jeff and much appreciated!
