I've just done this coil mod too. Looks great, 200 grams lighter. I custom made a skidplate too using a template and Nuggetfinder Equinox 11" Heavy Duty (solid) skidplate. Will test tonight and put  up a video for anyone curious.

The M8 could probably lose the same extra spokes, it's a little brick.

I wont cut my m8 ribs.. its stay as it is.. the m8 bumps rocks, roots etc a lot and pretty hard too.. especially in between rock in the river.. besides the weight of m8 is not an issue for me

Would love to see your custom made skidplate

Unfortunately no good. The coil tested fine in my back yard but once I got to the beach it was extremely unstable. Almost like being under a powerline. Couldn't ground balance or noise cancel. I'm thinking when I cut the spokes there may have been some sort of antenna or something that has been cut out. I'm not too fussed, I did this experiment knowing full well that best case I'd have a lighter coil, worst case I'm risking ruining it and needing to buy another.

Hopefully, my misfortune will serve as a reminder to others about the risks involved in attempting this modification.

I cut it exactly like how others have done it. Maybe I got too close to the perimeter? I did notice that 2 of the spokes were epoxy filled and 2 were hollow, maybe they had a wire in each side? There was also a square "tube" of resin inside the coil underneath the epoxy which also makes me think it contained some sort of wiring.  bummer but it is what it is, at least I have a spare 🙂

Oh no.. is it possible for you to attach pictures of the coil? would love to find out the source of the problem.. maybe the epoxy has micro crack due to vibrations while sawing the ribs and exposed the coil inside.. do you submerge the coil at the beach?

There was a thread by @strick regarding coil xray.. if I remember correctly there was nothing such as coil wire or antenna near the ribs or inside the ribs

Edit : found it

Here's a photo I sent my friend a few hours ago, I'll have to get some better pics tomorrow as it's 11pm for me currently. I'll try get some close-ups of the "tube" type things I mentioned as I've still got the offcuts in the back yard.image.thumb.png.2d333f9377add8b2675627285db7d0cc.png

Xrays of the coil. I can see the bits you were referring to on the right hand side of the coil.

Hard to know where the problem might be....others might spot something though.

I wonder why those two struts that were removed had epoxy ?

More likely you nicked an artery off to one side (probably the Rx side on the right), especially if the windings weren't central and were to one side a bit when potted.
