Popular Post UT Dave
Not sure if this is a small Medicine Wheel, just a fancy tepee ring, something else. The openings don't quite precisely line up with the cardinal points on my compass, but within about 3 degrees. Lichens, and decomposition of the rocks in place, I think it's very, very old, whatever it's purpose. My daughter, too many years ago, posing with a rock that has a big footprint in it. Rock with nice BCS style graphics applied. A house made of rocks. Really large, really cool looking rocks. My daughter posing again (again too many years ago) with a bone turned into rock. An entire landscape of rock. Trees turned into rocks. A ginormous rock with an arch in it. My friend Alan with a pretty rock. My 6'6" friend Kevin with a really big bone turned into a rock. - Dave 13

I always forget this forum doesn't work with manually entered [IMG] [/IMG] tags. Ingrained habit to type them in, but this is the only forum I've ever been on it doesn't work. Give me a couple minutes to rectify... - Dave

Magnetic North is often a few degrees off from celestial North. Native Americans (from ages past) would likely know the night sky quite well and have been able to accurately find celestial North. USGS topo maps show both magnetic North and celestial North. Hopefully that will show a 3 degree difference (direction consistent with your findings).

I just checked on a USGS quad, dated 1971, and the declination was a good bit more than 3 degrees. 16 degrees, actually, which is way more than I would have guessed. But, it's my understanding that declination does change over time, with the amount of change varying by distance from the pole. How much it would change every hundred, or thousand years, I don't really have any idea. But, it could very well actually be something to add a clue to the age of the feature. Good call out. - Dave

Exactly. They aren't terribly uncommon in parts of Utah where we spend a lot of time hiking. I've seen literally hundreds of them. Actually, I know of one "track way" where you can see hundreds at once. I accidentally spotted some dinosaur bones high up on an inaccessible mesa with my drone a couple of years ago. Did not recognize on the small screen while recording. But later, looking at the footage on my big monitor they are pretty plain to see. Most dinosaur bone sites are pretty well known by locals and I know a lot of them. But that's one I think nobody has documented yet. - Dave
