phrunt
Sport Division Update: September 18, 2024 In the course of final testing the Vortex, the Garrett team has chosen to improve the environmental protection of the rear case connectors. Although failures due to corrosion were unlikely to occur for many months or even years, the original design does not meet Garrett quality standards. We have therefore opted to take the effort to create a more robust sealing system. Initial product shipments are now expected to begin prior to Thanksgiving, so Vortex can be delivered in time of the holidays. Customer satisfaction and product quality are always of foremost concern to Garrett. We trust our dealers, distributors and customers will appreciate this move, as it was deemed important to the long-term success of the new Vortex product line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the drawing board. 😞 You wouldn't think it would be corrosion, they would be using stainless steel for the connectors for a salt water beach capable detector you would think? Maybe be some sort of leaks happening, either way, good they've picked it up before release, and a late November release date is good, at least we have a firm release timeframe now, full credit for their honesty. At first I thought it might be a joke, but it's not Notices | Garrett Metal Detectors 5 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/ Share on other sites
Geotech
I've found that some of the "stainless steel" connectors coming out of China (and most of them come from there) are not very stainless, and will eventually corrode in salt water. 6 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281199 Share on other sites

I've had the same, I bought stainless steel tie downs for my trailer that were made in China, they started to get surface rust in a few weeks. Perhaps they were just unlucky with choice of component. RickUK
Simon, this is the main reason i never buy a brand new or even a 2nd hand one till a minimum of 18 months from launch because of initial teething problems.Hope they can sort the issue out with regarding water ingress. They can change the stainless steel to a higher grade but then they have to start again regarding the testing again to see if they have addressed the problem successfully. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281221 Share on other sites
Singlestack Wonder
Firm release date is questionable. Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281270 Share on other sites

The most common stainless steels (e.g. 304 and 18-8) are neither recommended for salt water nor are they non-magnetic. (Metal detectorists find out about the latter pretty quickly!) 316 is a fairly common available alloy which is more resistant to salt water and also non-magnetic. (It's also more expensive....) I seem to recall there are even better alloys for heavy salt water applications. None of what I just stated is meant as making excuses for manufacturers. IMO they should state the approved usage conditions in their advertising and packaging. Do they even tell you what alloy is present? 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281273 Share on other sites
phrunt
I bought 304 tie downs for my trailer off Temu (Chinese marketplace), I thought a good deal but they seriously had surface rust in a week after it rained, and I live about as far from the ocean as you can in NZ which isn't overly far anywhere being a small skinny island but over an hours drive to the beach. I found the exact same ones at my local hardware for twice the price so bought off Temu, but I'm confident they're the same ones but if I bought them there at least I could have returned them as junk. Then I've got other 304 stuff that's been outside for many years and no rust. If Garrett was unlucky with component quality that can't be helped, at least it was found out prior to release, much better to delay release than to have detectors coming back constantly drowned or rusted as they'll sell the most in the first month or so after release, so they'd all be back at some point for repair. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281279 Share on other sites
George Kinsey
Gosh. I thought my EBS was a problem. Can cause leakage. 🙃 1 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26645-looks-like-theyve-had-some-leaking-issues/#findComment-281376 Share on other sites
