Fedrik
Hi everyone, a few months back this year, I´ve found what it appears to be an old trigger of a gun. Can anyone with more experience on this kind of objects can identify if this is indeed that? 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/ Share on other sites
JCR
Possibly. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/#findComment-282403 Share on other sites
Dutchman4
Hard to say. Most triggers have some blade/flat features to accommodate the finger. Fedrik
Agreed but what about older triggers, probably fire arms from early 1800s. You are right that the older triggers looked like that. Bob S.
Very difficult to do a visual analysis because of the extreme rust. Is there any indication of a drill hole under the shorter flat portion of the find or indication of a broken pin into the find? Triggers made in the early 1800's and later, usually have a pin press fit into the trigger which also presses into the interior side of the trigger guard bolster on assembly. Trigger guards many times could be cast brass while the trigger might be hand-wrought iron. Obviously yours is hand-wrought. Have you found any other brass and/or iron items that look like rifle parts? The reason I ask, is I see (below encircled) what looks to be the remains of a sheared off pin. I enhanced (gamma +) your image to better illustrate what I'm talking about. The shape is a reasonable assumption of a trigger. If it is a trigger, it might be very old, possibly Spanish 1600's. 6 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/#findComment-282424 Share on other sites
JCR
I’m looking above @Bob S. red circle. Looks like a smaller hole. The top of the flat also has a shape that could be a sear notch face. If it is a trigger, I would say probably a set trigger, given it’s short & fairly straight. Crude Spanish would be neat though. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/#findComment-282427 Share on other sites
kac
You could do reverse electrolysis and remove the rust without messing up whats left. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/#findComment-282428 Share on other sites
Fedrik
Thank you everyone for your analysis and opinions. This definitely makes me be more intrigue. I will try to do electrolysis. If this happens to be an old Spanish piece from the 1600´s it would make sense considering where I found it which was in the middle of an old field where Spanish started to settle when they arrived to these lands. Also, the place where I found it was where the actual owner of that land told me there was the first house built by the first person who ever lived there, around 300 years ago. The house and the foundations of course there was no trace of it but that I was able to find. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26774-is-this-an-old-trigger-of-a-gun/#findComment-282440 Share on other sites
