6 Barber coins and 4 mercury dimes all from the same spot. A bunch of V nickels and buffalos and wheats, even an IHP or two. I wonder if some buried old coin box finally rusted out. 🤔 Perhaps I should dig more iron... 😏

The beach is only about a half to 3/4 of a mile long, but I have walked it and found nothing but clad except where I focused on, about 100 feet of beach.

Most of the detectorists I've seen are older than me, they are there frequently dragging their shovels around. I saw some of their marks on the high beach, thankfully mine get covered up at high tide. 😬

I'm going to go back after a few more days, hopefully the tides and wave action (there isn't much of that lately) might stir up some mo'. For about 2-3 weeks a while back some serious north wind pushed the waves, and some east wind backed things up to flood stage. Now we're just getting high pressure.

I pretty much wiped out what was left that was giving solid tones yesterday. 🤔

Grandfather had found a few old quart mason jars that were filled with coins with his NOX 800 that rang up in the 16 area because of the lid. Those were in an old corn field near our house. Some seated and some not, but all were nice coins.

On the RH side of this photo is shown the most common mason jar lid used for possibly as much as a century (ca 1860-1960):

I have a small collection of those from my mother.  I've also found several while detecting, often badly deteriorated.  I've unintentionally broken some of the milk glass liners during recovery.  FWIW, this photo shows how they were actually sealed:

A rubber gasket was squeezed against a flange on the jar when the lid was tightened.  Quite a bit different than how commercial jars are sealed today.

In contrast to galvanized (a special method of zinc coating of) steel, I'm pretty sure these lids are pure zinc, or at least an alloy which is mostly zinc.

As far as detecting, the ones I've dug tend to ID in the zinc penny range.  I've been considering burying one in my test garden.  As Caleb points out, these were quite popular for hiding a money stash so knowing how they respond can be a valuable skill when cache hunting.

I have a hill behind my house that is littered with Mason jars and lids, unfortunately although I dug most all of them, none contained any treasure. 😢

On my Equinox 600, a mason jar lid was a 24/25, and on the Deus 2 it varies in the 75-85 range, and I dig them all.

I think I recall finding one lid at this beach but it wasn't connected to anything. If anything what was holding these coins was iron or some kind of similar metal. 🤔 I hear lots of iron. Digging it all would probably get me in trouble, so I dig the smaller iron signals.

Of course they could simply have washed down the drainage long ago. 😅

Mason jar caps do sound nice & you can hit on them deep if you are hunting carefully. I have one set in my test garden @18”, which is arm’s length, to simulate a Cache. A Post Hole Bank or Flower Garden Bank would probably not be that deep, and is a real possibility on an old house site.  Whole jars are a rare find unless you are digging a dump, and even then. They were reused as intended. You do find a lot of the milk glass cap liners. I’ve got a stack of them. A few clear glass.

Thanks 350 as I could not remember what the exact numbers were, but try a 10x5 coil and the number will be lower. I have found a few of the milk jars and they rang up much lower than the 24.
