Just love those wide-open fields and think about the lifetime it would take to cover them inch by inch. Thanks Okara, I'm truly blessed. I've pretty much hit the hotspots, but there's plenty of room for random finds, as a matter of fact I did well again yesterday, but it took a lot of walking. 🤔 Forgot how difficult it is to walk on bean stalks, no matter how short they cut them. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26944-mapping-early-america-interesting-find/page/3/#findComment-283902 Share on other sites

JCR
I agree with @Chase Goldman. Looking at your photo it doesn't need much. Careful picking of the raised corrosion with a toothpick/skewer & a gentle brushing with a soft brass brush should do it. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26944-mapping-early-america-interesting-find/page/3/#findComment-283976 Share on other sites
Fugio
Great finds! That broken piece that has leather sandwiched, might actually be wood. I think its folding ruler. I found one similar. So yay, looks like some map making going on there.  2 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26944-mapping-early-america-interesting-find/page/3/#findComment-283998 Share on other sites
JCR
I think you may be exactly right @Saker.  F350’s piece has the same graduation line markings.  Good eye. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26944-mapping-early-america-interesting-find/page/3/#findComment-284004 Share on other sites

A brand name for such a substance would be Renaissance Wax. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_Wax I have used this to preserve brass antiques and it is a long lasting treatment. It is probably a good idea to flush item well with water to ensure surface is at a neutral pH, especially if using any metal cleaners or polishes. 2 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/26944-mapping-early-america-interesting-find/page/3/#findComment-284009 Share on other sites
