Being on the 'inside' of the detector coil industry here in Australia, I can relate the following: For a small-medium sized coil, the cost of production in parts alone can be AU$75-100 per unit. Add labor time into the mix (3-4 hours per coil) and you add another AU$75-100 per unit. Add a wholesale profit margin and then a retailer profit margin and you can easily see where your $300 start price for an Aussie made coil comes from. Imagine all the overheads in running such a business in a Western country, versus Turkey, Ukraine, Bulgaria or China.

And just a reminder…. Minelab products are made in Malaysia and increasingly in China. I assume you are referring to outfits like Nugget Finder.

“Since December 2009, the Codan Group’s manufacturing service provider, Plexus Corp, a US company, situated in Penang, Malaysia has been responsible for the majority of Minelab’s worldwide metal detector production. Minelab is proud of its association with its outsource partner in Malaysia.”

Yes, as I mentioned 'Aussie made coil'. All of the Asian manufacturing sources have 1/4 the costs of here in Oz.

Another data point...

At White's, the Prizm/Coinmaster 9" concentric coil cost $50 to make in the Sweet Home factory, including material, labor, & overhead. That for a detector with a MAP price of $150. So that coil got moved to China where the cost to White's was $19, including China's mark-up.

Then it looks like XP is now one of the exceptions 🙂 making everything in a western country (in France ) .. With Garrett perhaps ?

Unless something has recently changed, Garrett makes their own coils inhouse, Garland, Texas.
