IBMe
Thin Coins Mode and Fast Mode have a half notch. What happens if you notch in those modes? You do get a half notch. So, you can put a half notch on the tab and get a full tone on the nickel. Con: Not saved when turned off. No ID on notch window. You’re just moving the cursor but no indication of what ID you’re on. Should Be: Setting should be saved when you turn machine off. ID should be indicated on the notch window. Half notch should be supported in all modes. 3 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27069-undocumented-feature-half-notch/ Share on other sites
Rick N. MI
That's interesting. I wonder how that would help gold jewelry hunting. I agree, why isn't that available in all modes. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27069-undocumented-feature-half-notch/#findComment-285067 Share on other sites

I see the half height segments in the manual (so it's not fully undocumented) but I have no idea what that practically means. Can you explain this further? Thanks. The corresponding description and figures for disc/notch in the Thin Coin and Fast programs are shown below. Also, on a separate note, I am scratching my head that the middle "non-ferrous" scale runs from 40 to 99 when the "natural" default ferrous low tone breakpoint is 35 (but can vary depending on high res iron disc setting up to 39) and the med-low tone breakpoint is "45". 40 is smack dab in the middle of those and does not correspond to either. Weird. I have always thought that the Garrett implementation of disc vs. low tone breakpoints to be overly complex and relatively unintuitive. Now this separate 40 - 99 scale just adds to the confusion of what is ferrous and non-ferrous for high disc settings. If you set up your half notch in custom mode will it not save what you have set ??? Custom uses Standard mode as it's base which does not have the half height notch segments like Thin Coins and Fast (see the figures from the manual excerpts above). No one like @IBMe who has played with this has explained what these half height notches actually do, though. The manual description is totally useless. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27069-undocumented-feature-half-notch/#findComment-285195 Share on other sites

The half notch is about half as loud as an un-notched slot. 1 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27069-undocumented-feature-half-notch/#findComment-285196 Share on other sites

They should have made it an option you can use it on any mode so you could set it up in Custom. Ideally, making it such that you could use a combination of full and half height notches, if desired. In fact, all modes should simply retain user customizations in non-volatile memory like is done with the ML and Nokta detectors. Seems like something that would probably be a welcome refinement on a future update, hopefully it is already on Garrett’s wish list. In the manual they really need to be more explicit about what suppressed means as that term is ambiguous and can be interpreted as fully silenced, also the half notch thing is visually subtle and needs to be highlighted more in the text of the manual. Basically, I agree with your recommendations. 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27069-undocumented-feature-half-notch/#findComment-285198 Share on other sites

Sounds to me like the Vortex is going to need some more updating out of the gate, i still haven't received mine yet and even when I do receive it, it will most likely be months before I am even able to get out and give it a swing, so I am in no hurry to even receive my Vortex yet, haven't even been able to really even browse through the online manual as of yet. If it charges OK, then anything I've seen so far are nice to have refinements not broken features.
