What is the difference between notch and discrimination with the Deus II? For example… if I set my discrimination to “0” and my Notch to “50” will I get the same result as setting my Notch to “0” and my discrimination to “50”?

Hey MV,

Based on what you wrote above, no.

If you set a single number in notch as opposed to a range, you are blocking (ignoring) only that number. You can set ranges.

If you set discrimination to 50 you ignore every target that has an ID of and below 50.

In Relic I generally set notch to 00-00, but otherwise I don't use it. Relic uses Disc IAR, so I set that to 5.

In my beach program I have disc at 0 and no notch at all.

Not exactly sure what you are asking here because of the way you stated your question.

If you set disc at 0, all ground noise is rejected.  If you set your disc at 50 then everything from -6.4 to 50 is rejected.

If you set notch at 0, then depending on the width of your notch, only the targets within the notch width are rejected.  You can set up your notch to be a width of 50 (i.e., setting the notch to reject everything between 0 and 50)  and in that case it will be SIMILAR to disc, but the negative "ground" ID numbers will not be rejected unless you also set your disc at 0 (it's lowest setting is not 0, it is -6.4 for all but the beach programs (disc min setting is 0) and the Relic and Gold programs which don't use disc, but DO use notch and something called IAR.

Also, with Disc, it "assumes" everything below the disc setting is "iron" and therefore, you can enable iron audio in the disc region, if desired.  You can't do that with notch, it just suppresses all target audio in the notched region.

Suggest you read through the thread linked below for a more in depth discussion of notch vs. disc in general.  I have linked a specific post of mine in that thread because it incudes screen shots of all the relevant Deus II manual excerpts that address Disc and Notch and other related filters such as Bottlecap reject, silencer, IAR, etc.  Hopefully, you have a link to the latest version of the Deus II online manual.  It is pretty thorough.  HTH

The reason I asked this question is that someone once said that notch works on the D2's audio signal and its discrimination is affecting the target search coil signal. My thought is that perhaps using notch instead of discrimination will improve target masking while still allowing a form of (audio) discrimination to be set.

Do you mean improve target "unmasking"?  Using disc which is a target signal processing filter, vice notch which merely suppresses post processed target audio, can help more with non-ferrous target unmasking in the presence of iron because it keeps the iron from pulling down (down averaging) the non-ferrous target ID.  Notch does nothing from a target ID processing perspective except suppress the audio of those targets whose ID falls within the notch window.  So it's kind of the opposite of what you were thinking, unless I am misunderstanding your line of thinking.

Also, be aware that Disc is not a magic bullet nor fool proof.  It has limitations on its ability to help unmasking and downaveraging.  It also can have downsides including slightly reducing target ID depth if you push it beyond a TID setting of 20 or so.
