I've got a gold mine to sell you!

I'm sure that lots of you have just come back from areas you once detected and found new claims on or near your spots.  Many places where you have found nuggets are claimed once again rather than being open.

Gold is in the news.  It doesn't have to be about BLM lands either.  Here is an article about buying an old mine or two.  The potential is there in some cases but buyer be ware.  It costs a lot of money to get the stuff out of the ground.

What has happened to your area with new claims or flips?

Mitchel, as flipping is getting worse it’s pretty sad. A lot of unknowable people are going to get burned.

It’s funny that your article is confusing mining claims for patented land, but it’s also kinda hard to follow because of it. I laughed when the guy mentioned that it’s easier to patent land now than before because you don’t have to show proof of production 😂

Here’s another recent one from the LA Times. Sorry, you need a subscription to read the entire thing but here’s the gist of it:

There is a special place in hell for commercial claim flippers.

There were people doing this with dredging claims when I was doing that in the late 70s…and it't been going for decades…you'd think people would be wise to it by now…but I guess there will always be an uninformed person who, without doing their homework, unknowingly steps into an expensive mess.

Yeah, they even post here from time to time to ask about detectors and dry washers and such. Seems like rye patch is another ripe place where a lot of that happens.

Like you said, people should know better, but one can’t help not feeling sorry for them when you see their excitement for wanting to try it out but knowing that they just got burned buying useless script. Some of my buddies probably feel the same way about me because I jumped into it full PI and all even though I can’t get out very often. Thank goodness I didn’t buy any claims!

That’s a great Twain quote! He certainly had a very witty way with a pen.

Over the years I have seen Claim Flipping get worse and even to this day, some of the very popular areas, it happens.

Rye Patch, NV for example.  I have seen people lease some of the claims and actually find a little gold when they ran some dirt.  I have also seen a few leases that were really productive when the washes were pushed and then detected.  Now, many of those claims out there get sold and resold and then resold again.

I even know folks here on DP who own claims at Rye Patch and they go visit a few times a year and find a couple nuggets here and there.  I guess owning a claim assures them of a place they can go and not have to worry about being on someone else's claim.  It gives them peace of mind while out swinging and someone drives by.  I guess if they can afford it, then great for them.

Me - I don't think I would own a claim at Rye Patch as I know how hard it been hunted for 30+ yrs.  Now I also know some of the claims are more productive than others and in that case, I would try and get permission from the claim owner.  For example, I know mush of Ed Spears ground has not been detected as much (by my guys and I), and when I do visit down there, I use my knowledge of the area/people to get permission.

But who am I to judge?  Heck, I sell a detector to someone who has a dream right.  I don't want to be the own to spoil their dreams.  At the same time, I also feel that my Staff/I do provide more detector knowledge opportunities (Field Training) than most places that sell detectors.  Heck, that's what's kept me and a select few others in business so long, the knowledge we share.

Now if I was a commercial miner (and a know a few), I feel owning a claim is a must.  But the headaches they go through trying to keep people off their claims....that's not for me.

Claim Flipping is a business to some and I hate seeing new folks get caught up in it, but at the same time, those folks need to do their due diligence.

On the reverse side, I know of a few folks who's purchases claims and did quite well for themselves.  Just realize, they usually know what their doing and have deeper pockets and or people to finance them.
