Easterly Wind

Just for 2 days, we had an easterly blow instead of the usual N or NW.  There are a few potentially scoured places that require immediate attention as it will revert to sand again very quickly. Although I've been going to this spot since the 1980's, its only in the last few years that the place changed completely due to mans intervention.

I was quickly down the long beach to the furthest spot which is subject to erosion. What sand there was, usually 10" at best, was gone.  The first two photos shows the difference from just a week before. There was clay exposed, Haematite patches showing and large cobs of old iron stuck to the bottom.  Its very exciting to see anywhere like this. Straight away I could see coins in the Haematite patches showing strong winnowing.

As usual, I took the Manti & my favourite M8 coil which I've put hundreds of hours in with. There wasn't anything over 2 inches deep and much was exposed in any case. Time, as ever, was the problem - no more than 2 hours or less due to tide. Flank speed on this job soon started filling up the bag. There were signals all over the place, I did try to concentrate on the winnowed spots. I never bother looking at stuff, just keep moving always aware that the next time conditions would likely alter.

Such a variety of stuff which is common in this spot, once a hotel was above the beach which accounts for the foreign coins, cutlery and room tags. If i'd found several gold coins, I would not have been surprised due to the rare conditions. A few rounds of ammo appeared, the usual .303 plus a WWI Turkish Mauser and a Remington Army Model .44 pistol round.

Next day back again. True to form, an inch of sand had already appeared. Not so many targets but still enough for another trip or more. Finally, I spotted a ring on the surface close to an iron bloom, another tide or two it would be gone under sand. Unmarked 18, which is unusual here in England, nearly everything is hallmarked. I suspect foreign 1920-30 by design with an eroded stone in bezel. The signal was limited to say the least, a directional sweep only, detecting reality for those who understand. Long ago I recognized the iron always needs to be removed if you get a good area. No crumbs from my table!

Second to last last photo shows day 2, much less then before. Both days coins are 95% coppers with a few battered pre war silver sixpences. Final photo is as it looked in 1869 with a boat being broken up. Big hotel there shows plenty of visitor's.

The energy is finally getting stronger...And yesterday I had a day like the old gone days, when less "operators" were nearby and the items were popping at every few inches of movement.

A real dream with open eyes and luckily I was the first on the spot to catch the window opening...

It's the only time my discipline wavers! As soon as I see scouring to that degree.

Ring not heavy, lighwight construction.  bezel fell to pieces, but an addition to the scrap yellow.

Nice hunt! It's amazing how the sand can be moved so cleanly from the hard bottom. Congratulations on all the good finds and acting so quickly.
