I was doing some testing with the VX9 at a big Denver park today. 

After I finished that up, I got out the Manticore and started hunting for coins and jewelry.

Coin popping only at these Denver metro parks. No shovels even hand diggers are a no go.

 

At most turf parks, I make myself dig at least twenty targets in the 20 to 28 target ID range on the Manticore. Those target IDs cover most of the smaller gold wedding bands and smaller women's gold rings, some stainless steel rings, about a dozen pull tab variants and US nickels. Sometimes gold rings don't sound so great but at least for me that has been rare depending on depth. I will dig a target in that range if it has fairly solid repeatable single target IDs for sure. So making myself dig at least twenty targets in that range takes care of that possibility. I don't mind walking over a crappy sounding ring and I am not going to beat myself up over it. I do mind walking over a good sounding target in that range with solid number or maybe two numbers if it sounds right.

I practice distinguishing what a nickel, wedding band and complete undamaged pull tabs sound like when they have the exact same target IDs. The Manticore, Deus 2, Legend, and to a lesser extent the Equinox models have enough modulated audio for me to hear a distinct difference between a US nickel and complete pull tabs. For my ears, a gold ring with the same US nickel target ID sounds even better than the nickel.

I have received plenty of push-back from forum members in the detecting world for even claiming that this is possible. I don't care. I just do it.

Some people can't hear this either because of their hearing, they don't have a detector that can do this kind of audio modulation or they don't practice a lot.

Anyway, the two rings I found today had target IDs and tones that were much higher than the 20-28 range. They were closer to a zinc penny but they did not sound like one. I don't hunt by looking at the Manticore's screen and I hunt in 5 tones/5 regions with normal audio theme. These two rings sounded like the most beautiful thing I have ever heard and I am a professionally trained classical music musician. I have heard a lot of really beautiful things on stage but nothing like the sound of gold ring bands. In a sea of aluminum trash at this 100 year old park, these rings stood out like hearing the voice of an angel.

They were both 5" or so deep, had a single target ID without wavering from all swing directions and sounded glorious.

That is really cool..great finds! Even though you hunt by sound ..did you happen to peek at the 2d screen? I am curious what those rings looked like on the screen?

20 pulltabs times 300 hunt days is definitely not a good ratio to the 28 gold rings I’ve found this year. 😹

Nice rings. But how come you didn't find all that with the VX9 ? 🤣. I do believe you can hear some difference between the tabs and gold , because I've done it myself. But can you hear/differentiate on a consistent basis ? I can't. I think alot has to do with the sand conditions and ring/size and orientation. Distinguishing between the 2 when they are all together is next to impossible for me. But solo rings can and do scream a beautiful sound like no other. Not many talk about this phenomenon and hearing. Guys think I'm wack ! But I believe herein lies the future of detecting.
