A perspective from a seasoned UK detectorist(12 years experience). I have used many machines over the years stating with Rutus then Minelab, XP, Nokta and loads more in between. My latest was the Nokta Legend ( with a back up of a XP ADX which in my opinion is very hard to beat). Anyway I have never had a Garrett but always heard marvellous things about the AT pro / max machines. I was quite happy with the Nokta Legend which is a very capable metal detector. However, when the the Vortex was announced I thought hey, this must be the Bees Knees if its performance beats the AT series. I paid £600 to get my hands on one of the first available in the UK. GARRETT it is an utter disappointment. Performance is behind the mid price mid range Nokta, Quest, Minelab and Rutus machines. No way can it compete with Deus 2 or manticore. You need to improve it fast to prevent it becoming a detecting lemon. You had the chance to show that XP and Minelab machines are overpriced and you can do better. YOU FAILED. Fix it fast or mine and many others will be on eBay and Vortex with go down the plughole.

Have you had the opportunity to download the new update that Garrett has out now? If you haven’t I hope it helps some and I believe Garrett is working on other updates that will hopefully be out soon.

I look at this way in with the new detectors we have now that we can update and not stuck with like what you bought in the past years.

Or we could wait six months to a year before making the purchase.

So you joined the forum for this useful post. Surely you could say hello first before bashing Garrett and promoting everything else. Seems like a lot of unhappy and "experienced/seasoned" UK detectorists at the moment 🤔

  • The title was changed to Vortex VX9 Should Be Garrett's Flagship But It's Sunk Unless Drastic Improvements Are Made Quickly!

Perhaps I am just Cheap, but I held off on both the Nox 800 and the Manticore Minelabs, And the Garrett Axiom, UNTIL the general consensus from actual users were good to excellent, taking into account all machines pluses and minuses.!

Maybe that way of making purchase decisions is just leftover from the days when a machines software could not be updated.!

Or when the machines had no software. Pure analogue circuits that were just awesome right out of the box. No online reviews and Youtube madness.....just wait for the Garrett and White's catalogues during the early 80's and drool......and as a young kid, find a way to save $500. Beg, borrow and sell anything possible.......the cat was looking worried for a while.

True, I could generally count on Whites, (used, I was poor) but once I acquired a slightly used Whites Eagle 2 I really didn't want to go back to not having numbers along with sound.  Now software updates mean you may not be stuck with a defective machine, unlike the burned in chip programing of early Microprocessor Detectors.

For what it’s worth White’s was the first to offer a update to your detector. If you had the Eagle they would update it to a Eagle 11 for 125.00 .They just changed the chip out.

But now we go to out computer update just about anything we own .

You can bet Garrett is a long ways from being finished on just one update.

Remember guys it’s made in America and it cost lots more here unless you’re willing to work for a bowl of rice per day.
