I tried the discrimination test again. Worked just fine this time. I blame the first test failure on EMI, couldn’t have been me.

Using nickel, dime and 3-inch screw, don’t have nail. Discrimination 14. No other filters.
Coin, down the barrel, on end of screw and alongside the screw.
Passed all tests.
Sometimes the coin gets pulled down into the iron range, but since iron audio is on, you get a tone instead of a buzz.

Nail (screw) inch and a half above coin. Right under screw or a little away from screw, passed all test, sometimes gets pulled down.

Tests that are important to me:

Pile of trash with gold ring 5 or 7 inches away and a fast swing. Will I know that ring is there or will the audio blur it out? It has to be extra alerting coming off a big noise. Passed test.

Gold ring between two steel caps at various distances. Passed with flying colors on fast swing. On a slow swing, alerting enough that I would raise the coil to check it out, then it would pass the test.

Actually, seems to work better with a little discrimination and iron audio on.

Recently on one of the YouTube livestreams featuring Steve Moore from Garrett and highlighting the Vortex, Steve mentioned that Garrett users were asking for a waterproof Apex with a few extra features.  From what I've seen and heard, it sounds like that is what they delivered, with the exception being the VDI issue.  Personally I would like to have "some" of those firmware features on my Apex, as it would make the Apex an even better performer than it is presently.

Sometimes when a person has expectations for a particular object, and that object does not measure up to the person's expectations, the object is deemed as a failure; even though it may fulfill someone else's expectations and is viewed by that person as a success.

Once the kinks get worked out of the Vortex, I'm sure it will please the users that view it as a waterproof upgrade to the Apex, and nearer to some of the offerings from competitors in the same price range.

Huge mistake. The feature limited VX5 should have come first, giving Garrett more time to work on the advanced features. They could blame any perceived lack on it being the bottom dollar model. Then VX7 incorporating feedback from VX5, then finally VX9. All VX5 and VX7 owners could buy comfortably knowing they could upgrade to the more expensive versions when the time came, incurring no penalty other than the price difference. It would have really leveraged the unique ability to upgrade. The one big innovation here is at this point in time absent as a selling point.

You nailed it Chase and Steve!

After the announcement of the first “upgradable” metal detector, doing the initial release bypassing this feature is puzzling at best. You would think the basic model would be the logical choice to start the in field debugging process.

If I bought a VX9 would they give me a refund when I can downgrade to VX5??? I’m just kidding about the refund but I was honestly looking forward to getting a VX5 and seeing the difference between the three levels
