Popular Post stupot
I spend a lot of time looking for places that get scoured out even by simple changes of current as well as storms. There is a certain amount of predictability to certain beaches. The same areas with the same wind direction get opened up time after time. Ocasionally, different prevailing winds can do something complrtely different. Overnight the wind had shifted from its normal westerly to an easterly blow of about force 5, enough to scour certain spots. On the off chance I decided to try a spot which id found a lot of stuff some years ago but had completely sanded in every single time I dropped in. I'm not interested in modern coinage which you can always find around, but older bits well buried. The upper reaches of the shoreline were piled high with stones and sand obviouly moved from somewhere. Did a fair bit of walking to try and see any changes at the low water mark, some spots looked ok. I spent an hour around these lower stone areas before stumbling on a huge area of shingle hidden from sight below the surrounding sand. I like the d2 and used it here. Having come from both the xp and ml stable I like them both, They complement each other really well. This spot had an army base and rifle range close by, so ammo can be a real pest. Dont mind finding it as long as I dont get overwhelmed. Coins etc and ammo ran about 50%, so ok there. The clay bottom was less than 6" deep and because of tide constraints, I moved quite rapidly. The spot may also quickly disappear if the sand shifts again. Plenty of coinage from the Victorian era up to the early 1970's was typical here. A few silver coins mixed in to the total along with a lot of scrap brass etc. The d2 does push numbers very high compared to the manticore, typically 20 points on coins. Rings can also read high along with lead .455 rounds so all had to be dug. I knew there would be jewellery there just putting the time in. Eventiually, near the end after 5 hours searching as the tide filled the spot I got a 9ct band. Some base metal jewellery showed as well. I went back the next day with more stuff turning up but no jewellery this time except a heavy brass ring! Ammo is problematic further along with rings mixed in and reading the same as many of the rifle rounds. The only way you can search at all is to notch out the .303 and hope for the best. Distorted spent rounds of course read differently, so it's either dig or extend the notch. No doubt I've passed over rings but not digging many, many dozens of .303 is a fair trade off for me in this spot. 19 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27359-shingle-bed-exposed/ Share on other sites
F350Platinum
Excellent finds stupot! You sure have a great sense of opportunity. Again I don't envy your conditions, the rocky bottom is a challenge. Finding the old stuff is a reward. 🏆 3 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27359-shingle-bed-exposed/#findComment-287484 Share on other sites

TTT2866
Beautiful washout, nice finds! I don't mind digging the odd 50cal shell as we don't get many here. The 303's are OK, but wow you get a few! Are you allowed to scrap them? Our scrapyards will deny an entire load if there's any shells mixed in.
