Nice digging!

Sort of .  That half, the digging was kind of brutal though, actually.

It was a deep signal, with the depth meter pegged.  At first, bouncing all over from 60's to mid 90's but all on the center line.  After pinpointing, and the short sweeping, it was giving a pretty consistent 92-95 with occasional bounces down into the 60's still.

This beach has a layer of darker, hard gray sand I call "hard pack".  @abenson knows exactly what I mean.  I know what real hard pack is, but that's what I call this hard layer on this beach.  Today, that layer was frozen in some spots.  Not everywhere, some spots the hard pack wasn't frozen and in some spots it was frozen above the hardpack.

I walked away from a few less promising targets without recovering them rather than fight that frozen hardpack.

Anyway...  Had I been expecting that I'd have carried my big pick out there.  But I hadn't...

So that half...  I hit the frozen hardpack at about 8".  And I really wasn't making progress trying to chip away at it with my long handle #2 shovel.  So I walked away from the hole and hunted away from it for awhile to let it kind of thaw a bit.  Hunted back to it, chipped away some more.  Repeated that a few times.  Finally got it out of the hole at about 14".  All in all, I spent a heckuva lot of time and effort digging that sucker out!

Sure felt good to hold that crusty black half dollar in my hand when it was all done though!

Nice job on the half Dave. Dang I bet it was cold out there with the wind blowing like it was. It's getting tough at the beach, lake level needs to come up and move the sand around to expose some of those deeper targets. This is probably one of the last weeks you can hunt out there before it's all frozen. I had to walk away from a few targets myself the last time I was out there.

Yes, chilly it was!  I was dressed for it.  But my hands froze in neoprene gloves.

Definitely needs to be some movement of the sand.  Even bullets weren't that frequent today.  Hitting a half dollar out there anymore, that's just getting real, real lucky.

Great saves and goes to show that if you know your equipment anything is possible.

Good luck on your next hunt.
