Because the geniuses employed by Minelab came to the conclusion that they can generate more revenue by getting more for every detector they sell......brilliant marketing when you think about it really 🤣

What with Garrett doing this, AlgoForce and Nokta PI machines.....MInelab's gravy train is heading for that bridge that has just been washed away.

Was there pressure put on the coil makers to drop their projects by Garrett competitors?

Not likely, neither are under Minelabs control, it was X-coils and Detech that were going to do them.

2025 the year of the PI price crash.

One can only hope. (Not that I want you to be stuck with overpriced inventory, Ron.  I feel for you dealers who are getting whiplash from these back-to-back sales and price hikes - it can result in customer paralysis).

People have always complained about Minelab prices while lining up to buy them. For those seeking the absolute best performance possible it will still work. But for people who might look for gold a week or two a year, for those that relic hunt or beach hunt with a PI, they are pricing themselves out of reach. At this price I think it is a very simple choice for most people. @Jeff McClendon @abenson @Chase Goldman and yours truly have all gone from Minelabs to the Axiom and none of us is suffering from the switch. At $1999 I can honestly say the machine is a bargain, killer bang for the buck. Can I look your average interested party in the U.S. in the eye (I never speak for Australians ) and tell them they have to spend three or four times as much money to find gold with a PI? No, I can't.

Garrett Axiom at Nome, Alaska

I can honestly say my latest relic outing with Axiom in hot dirt was both productive and enjoyable.  I swung the smaller coil knowing that I could still get better depth than my top of the line VLFs in those soil conditions and was rewarded with decent finds and a usable shoulder at the end of the day.  Threats of inclement weather during the outing did not have me reaching for my waterproof VLFs or having to gerry rig bread bag raincoats for my control box.  Axiom is a great win for Garrett and with this latest price announcement, should siphon off even more hot dirt relic detectorists away from GPX's.

With Garrett's new pricing, the proven bang for the buck Algoforce and the pending Nokta Gold it's going to be increasingly hard for many other than the most serious prospectors to justify Minelab's new pricing.  The others at an estimation offer between 70 to 90% of the 6000's performance, beat the SDC in almost everything and can better a stock 7000 on the little bits.

Minelab likely owns the big gold at depth with the 7000 and legacy GPX athough how many of us have that, others are biting at their heels on the rest.

We will see how long their price hikes last, with Garrett's new pricing anticipating the Nokta release and we know the Nokta is going to be a pricing game changer, it's looking grim for Minelab.  I hope Nokta shock us and compete with Algo pricing.

If I was a dealer I'd be keen to stock the Garrett, Algo and Nokta and reap the rewards of the price war.

I think the current ranking for performance is

7000, 6000, Axiom, Algoforce, Sdc 2300 and unsure where the Nokta fits in there, the price to performance ratio is out of whack though, the Algo isn't a quarter of the detector like its price would indicate.
