Jim Schneringer
Been lurking around here a bit. First time out this year and with two other friends running ATPros and myself with a Legend. I was running v1.17 with the LG30 coil. Usually my friends run circles around me as they have been coin and relic hunting for years and I'm fairly new at it. Relic hunting has not been all that fun as I have been learning, digging tons of trash. That all changed when I tried the Mental Metal coin setup and had easily my best day so far. That setup was punching deep too, a good 4" or more than the ATPros and that seemed to be where the best items were. One half dollar was a good 11" down and hitting strong, even with a good ID 57-55 range. I was stunned how well this setup worked with buttons, coins, and eliminating a lot of trash. I usually dig a ton of nails, foil, bottle caps and those mostly discriminated out this time, except a few large items like a 6" nail. I probably missed a few items, but the fun factor went way up for me. I had to admit to my friends I finally had a good time relic hunting and now want to go back for more. It really made my friends think about getting Legends now. 9 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/ Share on other sites
F350Platinum
Nice, and welcome to the forum. I do think though that I would have found most of those items with other newer top tier detectors... 🤔 Looks like y'all had a pretty target rich environment. 🙂 Regardless, nice finds! 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/#findComment-288201 Share on other sites
Chase Goldman
Very nice saves. Suprising those Walker halfs were still hanging around at what appears to be a busy former WW2 training area, especially if your ATP buddies have hit that site previously. I'm actually surprised the ATPs are not hitting those huge silvers even at 11", they may need to re-check their settings. Although local soil conditions could be to blame. You might want to use the Legend's mineralization meter feature to see how mineralized that ground is. If mineralization is moderate to high, then that could explain how your ATP buddies might walk over or not detect those silvers. It's the ground handling advantage of multifrequency. Congrats again on those nice finds. 5 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/#findComment-288206 Share on other sites
Jeff McClendon
Jim is from Yuma AZ. That explains how the ATs missed those deeper targets. They would have been all iron or totally missed depending on how they set up their AT Pros due to the mineralization in that area. Chase said: “It’s the ground handling advantage of multi frequency”. I want to clarify that statement by adding: it’s the outstanding ground handling advantage of the Legend’s multi frequency. Simply can’t say that about the multi frequency tech ability of some other SMF detectors in bad ground like the DFX, V3i, and the Apex and possibly the Vortex. Hopefully BBS/FBS Minelabs would have hit those 11” half dollars. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/#findComment-288207 Share on other sites

Agree. I had my blinders on and was thinking about detectors, like Legend, that leverage SMF capabilities to handle hot dirt. In the wake of naming those SMF detectors that don't necessarily leverage SMF capabilities well for ground handling, I think it would be helpful to also mention those that are also in roughly the same general league (from a ground handling perspective) including: Nokta's Score series (possessing Legend DNA), Nox, Manticore and D2. With Triple Score and Legend being great values. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/#findComment-288209 Share on other sites
Jim Schneringer
When I dug the half dollar out, the hole was fairly deep, 11" (my guess). After all the OMG not another one, lol, I tossed it back into the hole and I could raise my detector a good 3" higher and still get I would dig that signal. One of the ATPros was still not hitting it at all except when he lowered his coil into the hole. The other one was barely getting a whisper at ground level, said he probably would not dig that. They were using smaller coils and I have no idea of their settings except "Coin Mode". which usually they are great at getting coins. Lots of trash and to be honest I do not know how to read mineralization on my Legend. Another option I need to look into and learn. Might be good to help find black sand iron areas for dry washing? 5 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/27433-first-outing-of-the-year-with-the-legend-did-not-disappoint/#findComment-288218 Share on other sites
